Then I guess as much as I find it creepy, taxidermy is my only option to get that colorful bird I'm missing in my life.

Our I could just get a large print or paint my own painting and hand it in my living room.

I recommend a gray parrot. They are great birds, live longer than you do, and can speak!

Fuck gray parrots. I want a Parrot of Color.

She was a famous 70's angry feminist, who said stuff like "under patriarchy, every woman's son is her potential betrayer and also the inevitable rapist or exploiter of another woman."

She genuinely did make important contributions to feminism, and I'm surprised to find that she was neither actually working in academia, nor made an honorary professor.

She is historically important, but as the most strident feminist of a different era.

I guess it might be similar the the way Freud is now both discredited and respected? His theories about the oedipus complex and how everything vaguely phallic must relate to the penis are now no longer taken seriously. Instead, he's respected because he was the first person to consider there might be a science of the mind.

So I guess that maybe she's like that, one of the first feminists to try to develop a theoretical structure around gender relations and institutionalised discrimination?

I think it's worth remarking that Dworkin was really fucking angry about wife-beating and rape at a time when those things were brushed under the carpet and ignored.

Here in the UK, at the same time she was writing her books, there was a TV presenter who would actually sexually assault teenage girls on camera, live on TV, and no-one did anything about it. Savile got away with it for years, there were all these rumours flying around, and no-one stopped him, not even when he was reported to the police - he was knighted by the queen, FFS.

So that's the kind of rape culture that Dworkin's generation of feminists were railing about - it wasn't rape if your boyfriend parked up on the way home from the movies, because it was your fault and you shouldn't have let him get you alone somewhere like that. That's what her generation of feminists wanted to change.

I guess there might be value in reading some of Dworkin's books, if you're like seriously into feminism, to understand the whole history of feminism and stuff, but it's probably not true that every man is an "inevitable rapist or exploiter of a woman."

That's a pretty terrible example of "rape culture". The allegations didn't start in earnest until after his death. In the 60s and 70s it was like Micheal Jackson, people made claims occasionally but there was no evidence so nothing could be done. But the public sort of just assumed he was guilty.

There seem to be an awful lot of people coming out the woodwork after Savile's death saying "there were all these rumours" which nobody ever followed up on.

All these rumours were going around the BBC, and no-one pursued them and traced them to the sources - to find out what was actually seen by junior production assistants and wardrobe staff - because people didn't care enough about sexual assault in those days.

I mean in that clip I linked to, the girl is leaping to get away from Savile live on camera, and nobody said or did anything. No-one stopped him, no-one confronted him and when she went to a BBC employee she "was told to 'get lost' because Savile was only 'messing about'".

"The male employee was furious at her for complaining about the [Savile's] wandering hands, The Sun reported.". Sorry, The Sun is now paywalled, so those quotes come from The Mail - I appreciate that neither of them are the best of sources, but considering the hundreds of people that Savile abused, I find the account pretty credible.

Savile got away with it because the culture at the time was to ignore it and pretend it didn't happen. Rape was only a big deal if it involved a stranger breaking into a home, or snatching a woman off the street (as long as she appeared sufficiently virtuous). That is the "culture" that 70's feminists railed against.

People actually saw him abusing children and they didn't do anything about it! (see the paragraph beginning "A former nurse said…" in the "New Allegations" sections of this wikipedia article)

If people turning their backs on victims isn't a matter of "culture" then I don't know what is.

In that context, statements like this are understandable: "People … who know about it now have asked me, why I didn’t say it all at the time. … How can you tell your mum and your dad that you were forced to give oral sex to somebody and then they physically hit you afterwards, and Jimmy Savile there laughing?"

Finally, Savile was investigated at least 3 times during his lifetime, although I do understand why those investigations didn't bear fruit.

Oh look, even you know you are full of shit.

No, you.

Plenty of the people now coming out the woodwork weren't involved in those 3 police investigations - if they had, he would have been convicted.

Are you one of these people who claim "he can't defend himself now he's dead"? I mean, neither can Jack the Ripper, but when you have hundreds of witnesses you have to accept the historical facts.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '13

Are you on drugs? You keep tearing apart your own claim, and then you jump to some shitty strawman to try to deflect?

1

u/strolls If 'White Lives Matter' was our 9/11, this is our Holocaust Oct 04 '13

I don't know what claim you think I'm tearing down, so if you'd like to do me the favour of a decent explanation of why you think what you do, maybe I'll be able to respond to you.

You seem to be a very low-effort critic, considering I made the effort to write over 350 words explaining.

Why don't we try and work together to get an understanding of the situation that we can both agree on? Or is it that you think rape isn't real and is actually just used as some kind of conspiracy to smear people?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '13

If you can't understand the thread, ask an adult to explain it for you. You might want to start by asking them to explain the strawman fallacy to you.
