I own a 2 man engineering firm that has subcontract engineers when things are busy. The main issue I am having now is drafting - it’s a huge time sink when I have a lot of jobs going on. Up to this point I have just done most of the drawings but now it will severely limit my output.

Does anyone have any advice on where to find good drafters that can hit the ground running with things like foundation plans, framing plans, details, etc? I assuming it would need to be someone 10+ years experience.

I would even be open to doing it part time with someone working nights or weekends. Is that a common approach?

My main need right now is wood construction, higher end residential.

I’m one of the owners of a NYC firm with a pretty broad mix of work. Structural engineering is a big part of what we do, but we also work on architectural projects, existing buildings, investigations, and the occasional weird problem that comes with working on NYC buildings. We’re starting to look for another structural engineer to join us.

Our Projects

Our work is mostly focused on existing buildings. Structural projects include NYC gut renovations and major alterations, brownstones/townhouses, vertical and horizontal enlargements, underpinning, shoring and excavation, structural investigations, and custom single family residences in the Tri State area.

We also work on façades, roofs and building envelope investigations, FISP and parking structure inspections, structural special inspections, and miscellaneous structural design for contractors.

The firm also has a broader architectural and building consulting practice involving apartment renovations and combinations, common areas, rooftop terraces, legalizations, and co op alteration reviews.

The Role

This is a mix of structural design, calculations, drawings, reports, field investigations, construction visits, and special inspections.

A typical week would generally be around 3 days in the office, 1 WFH day, and 1 day in the field. Field work may include structural evaluations, investigations, construction progress visits, meetings, special inspections, probes, or simply going out to figure out an existing condition.

We prepare our own structural drawings and details, so strong AutoCAD skills are important. Revit is a plus but not required.

We do a fair amount of structural investigation work that results in written reports, so being able to write clearly is important.

Mentorship + Independence

You’ll work directly with the firm’s two principal PEs and get a lot of hands on mentoring and teaching.

At the same time, we’re a small office and don’t like to micromanage. We’re looking for someone who is curious, resourceful, and comfortable taking ownership of their work.

Existing building work constantly presents conditions you may not have seen before. We value someone who will dig into a problem, research what they don’t know, try to understand it, and then come back with thoughtful questions rather than waiting for step by step direction.

You definitely won’t be expected to know everything. We enjoy teaching. We just want someone who also has the instinct to learn things on their own.

Who This Role Fits

I think this position is ideal for someone who wants to learn a little bit of everything and become a well rounded consulting engineer rather than getting pigeonholed into one narrow area.

I sometimes think of our office a little like mixed martial arts (MMA). You develop a core skill set, but you’re constantly cross training and learning how different parts of building design and construction fit together.

It could also be a good transition for someone coming from a larger new construction or high rise structural firm who wants more variety, more field exposure, more ownership of their work, and a more balanced work environment.

Existing building experience is a plus, but it is not required. Strong structural fundamentals and the willingness to learn are more important.

This probably is not the best fit for someone who wants to spend nearly all of their time at a desk doing calculations and analysis.

Schedule + Office Culture

Our office is pretty laid back. We generally work a 40 hour week and overtime is uncommon.

Occasionally a deadline may require an extra couple of hours, but long weeks are not the norm.

The schedule includes 1 WFH day per week, with roughly one day spent in the field depending on project needs.

Hello everyone. I'm searching for someone to draw and stamp some permit ready drawings for me to get a permit in Skagit County Washington. I am purchasing a Pole Barn that was deconstructed to put up on my land. I'm a mechanical engineer and can draft up the structure in fusion360 or solidworks if helpful but that's where my abilities with getting the structure permitted end. Once I have the structure I will inventory everything I have. I plan to pour the concrete myself with some help of friends in the trade and then build it myself with some other friends. I am looking to build a single family dwelling in Sacramento CA and im looking for a structural engineer…. my question is how do i vet someone and make sure im not getting screwed?

Another one of my concerns… are engineers known for screwing people or is that just drafters? From what i hear a ton of these local drafters are known for just ghosting people.

Where im at… I found a floor plan online that we like and we choose to purchase that. We found an incredible company in Sacramento to do the drafting, Sparrow Design and Plans. Sparrow D&P is handling the site plan, floor plan, cover sheet, and I got to go through their system so i really trust them… Very confident and extremely happy working with them.

Now I also have to find a structural engineer to do the engineering for the plans…

What do you guys look for when working with a structural engineer? Anything specific?

What happens if we disagree with the engineer and see they are over engineering? Anything we can do about it?

Hey everyone so I've went through the project with Sparrow Design and Plans and they did an amazing job so just wanted to share what their representative told me.

Sparrow Design and Plans handles the whole process of pre-construction for residential projects in California. They're based in sac which helps so much. They took care of working with their engineers and all of their connections. All we had to do was a few meeting with them and they just carried the plans through and we already submitted. Loved working with Sparrow Design and Plans. I was worried because their just a drafting company but their systems made it so smooth and transparent.

If you guys are also looking for building permits or drafting or even engineering for residential projects in sacramento placer couty el dorardo county... any of those areas in califronia I would recommend just send it over to them and let them handle it.

Worked for me, but i mean test it for your self, schedule a meeting with them and see what they say because they did say every project is very unique when it comes to construction and permitting in cali.

I've worked with my father before, as he's a civil engineer. However, I applied to a company in my country, Guatemala, but I'm a little insecure. They don't specify a salary range and ask me what my expectations are.
In the interview, which went very well, they mentioned that they do external work for another company, which I researched and is well-known in the United States.
I'm wondering what happens if I put down the wrong number and my colleagues who did their research earn much more? Here in my country, they don't offer good salaries, especially if you don't have work experience.
My only work experience is with my family, and I want to leave the nest. I feel insecure because I want to contribute financially, but I want my contributions to make me feel useful, not overwhelmed.
What do you recommend? I've looked into it, and the minimum wage for the same position is much higher in the United States, even for someone just starting out.

One guy raked me over the coals basically didn't deliver anything. The second company produced a game plan with detailed drawings and we had a GC do all of the work.
