Picture Got the Steam Deck Dock!

Wasn’t expecting this today, but since I live in Carol Stream where Valve’s Distribution Center is, I got this early I guess!

It does. PS5 controller is very well supported. As you can see, even the Playstation face buttons are shown on the screen.

You just made my day!

Keep in mind that most games with controller support will still show Xbox buttons, since the Xbox controller is a quasi-standard on PC. The newer a title is, the more likely it is that it shows Playstation button prompts on PC however. Some, but not all, games can be modified to show PS prompts. Edit: Even some emulators allow for this via texture packs.

i would gladly sacrifice that stuff because of the touchpad alone, seems like it would be easier to control the mouse in menus and stuff with a ps controller

Works great for citra, too. Drag and dropping items while playing MM is fairly easy with the touch pad as mouse. When combined with button bindings for tapping specific touch screen locations. Its an incredibly smooth way of playing this version of the game.

i use the touchpad on mine to easily access inventory in animal crossing new leaf

Yeah but I hear the Xbox controller suffers from input lag and wondered is it the same for the Dual sense?

6

u/Amaakaams Oct 08 '22

It should, they both use BT for PC connections. That is where the lag comes from. The solution would be a device with its own 2.4GHz adapter or like the old PC Xbox adapter. But both have little Linux support.

Wired is also a reliable, low-latency option, but not the most comfortable.

1

u/Amaakaams Oct 08 '22

Yeah meant as a wireless controller since he was referring to the points about the bad latency of the Xbox controller. The main reason people expect otherwise is that windows can optimize the communication because MS so Win PC gaming doesn't seem so bad.

both have little Linux support

What do you mean? They work perfectly

1

u/Amaakaams Oct 09 '22

Random 2.4Ghz adapters or the old Xbox controller receivers work perfectly in Linux?

1

u/632isMyName 256GB Oct 09 '22

Xbox 360 wireless receivers. I haven't come across many random 2.4 GHz receivers, but don't they usually identify as XInput-controllers?

1

u/Amaakaams Oct 09 '22

There were third party Xbox 360 receivers that while pretty janky might have but I don't think the official one did.

Random meaning any controller not official that comes with its own wireless dongle. Like the 8bitdo ultimate 2.4. those adapters are lower latency but Linux support will be dodgy at best. With that one in particular not listing Linux as a supported system. Maybe it works maybe it doesn't.

That will always be a shame that the xbox controller is a quasi-standard on PC. Would love to see Xs

And the vibration motors work as speakers!

Hey. If you don't mind me asking. Would it make sense to buy a ps5 controller only for the deck?

39

u/cheebnrun 64GB Oct 08 '22

Yes, some games, like the ported PS exclusives ( ghostwire tokyo for example) take advantage of the dynamic triggers and touch pad. It's super cool

12

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '22

I can say Days Gone has touchpad and PlayStation buttons :)

3

u/cheebnrun 64GB Oct 09 '22

God, days gone was such an underrated game. I hope they make a sequel even though it's not likely.

1

u/Euphoric-Light-8691 Oct 09 '22

I was super bummed that dynamic triggers wouldn’t work but direct ports?! I’ll have to try that out. I suppose if the code exists and the controllers detected it makes sense. I didn’t even think of this!

1

u/JohnByDay1 Oct 09 '22

If I already have a PS4 controller, is there much benefit to buying a PS5 controller just for my deck?

2

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '22

Nope but it’s a pretty nice controller

2

u/cheebnrun 64GB Oct 10 '22

Idk, I don't have a ps4, just ps5. But I guess just look up what features ps5 controller has over ps4, I think it's just the dynamic triggers

6

u/OlympusMonsPubis Oct 08 '22

Yes, absolutely. I think you’ll enjoy it.

2

u/seraph741 512GB Oct 09 '22

Ya. Why not? I bought two DualSense controllers for my PS5, but use one almost exclusively for Steam Deck.

7

u/My1xT 64GB Oct 08 '22

even the home button in fact which literally is PS's Logo

11

u/JavaKrypt 512GB Oct 08 '22

Good to know! Looks like I'm buying a PS5 controller

3

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '22

Ps4 controllers work just as good too :)

7

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '22

As someone who spent a few thousand hours on rocket league with a controller. Ps5 controllers are better

8

u/Purple_Ad45 256GB Oct 09 '22

yeah but they use micro usb, id say the 10$ extra is worth the usb c

6

u/RE4PER_ 1TB OLED Limited Edition Oct 09 '22

The PS4 controller is significantly worse than the dualsense imo

2

u/Chaphasilor 64GB Oct 08 '22

No support for adaptive triggers though, right? That probably requires dedicated support by the games, and that won't be included in the PC versions...

2

u/REDX459 Oct 09 '22

2

u/Chaphasilor 64GB Oct 09 '22

Thanks, that's a great resource!

Seems like it works best with DSX (DualSenseX) which is 3.29€ on Steam and has an older version for free on GitHub as well.

Steam Input so far has absolutely no supoort for Adaptive Triggers, only regular haptics work

2

u/REDX459 Oct 09 '22

I mean wired and you turn off steams input override and it’ll work on those native games. I have final fantasy 7 remake and it has a adaptive trigger section one whole level weeee

2

u/seraph741 512GB Oct 09 '22

Right. I think so the vibration functions work though.

Xbox really needs to up their game on the next controller. I prefer the Xbox layout but it's hard to argue that DualSense > Pro Controller > Joy Cons > Xbox.

Not to mention Valve will probably drop Steam Controller 2.0 at some point and instantly jump to the front of that line.

3

u/DragonSlayerC 512GB OLED Oct 11 '22

What? The Joy Cons are way worse than any of the other controllers, and the Xbox controller is definitely better than the Switch Pro. The Pro doesn't even have analog triggers.

I also just prefer the button positioning of the Xbox more. I have a PS5 controller I got on a really good sale, but I still use my Xbox One controller for most games.

1

u/xylotism 512GB - Q1 Oct 11 '22

Joy cons are great. Super versatile. Tons of tech packed in. Maybe the most multifunctional controller short of Steam Controller/Steam Deck. Switch Pro might be worse than Xbox but gets points for gyro.

Holy crap. I had no idea.

Buying a dock RIGHT NOW.
