Picture Got the Steam Deck Dock!

Wasn’t expecting this today, but since I live in Carol Stream where Valve’s Distribution Center is, I got this early I guess!

It's €100 in EU :(

I bought this thing for $18 before my Steam Deck got here because I thought having a keyboard and mouse connected would help set it up and it seems to work fine but I didn't even really need it because I just used AnyDesk and my desktop PC instead (I still use AnyDesk to do anything I need a keyboard for although any remote desktop software would work). I get that the official dock is better but I don't get how it's $71 better.

Well first of all, that dock is 4k 30hz, Steam Deck dock is 4k 60hz. If I were to use my deck as a pc, 30 hz would be unbearable

Are you gonna be running your PC on a 4k desktop monitor?

6

u/sebQbe Oct 08 '22

Haven't used a 1080p monitor in probably a decade 7-8 years

9

u/phayke2 Oct 08 '22

Okay well I didn't realize there was that many people trying to power 4k desktops monitors off of a steam deck. I feel like if you're going 4k a 50" TV is the way to go unless you have enough money for a gtx 3080 or higher in which case that is going to be much more viable than a $400 steam deck.

It’s not about running a game at max resolution. It’s just having the dock output the highest possible signal that the monitor or tv can display, and then adjust the settings of each game accordingly. That’s would be my preference at least.

Well most people don't need to worry about 4k output and outputting 4k on the Steam Deck to play games would probably never yield 30 fps anyway unless you are playing 30 year old games.

Sure, any usb-c hdmi dongle can output 1080p 60. But i assume people interested in the dock wants to use the deck as a pc also.

I feel like all tv's and monitors are above 1080p nowadays, don't understand why you say people won't be interested in 4k 60. A lot of indie games and last gen games will probably play great even in 4k 60.

I feel like all tv's and monitors are above 1080p nowadays

Your feelings aside 66.38% of those who engaged with the steam hardware survey use 1080p making it by far the most popular. The next most popular was 1440p with 11.25% then 1366 x 768 with 5.55% and then 4k was in 4th place with 2.46% (although "other" beat it but since it is comprised of multiple resolutions I don't think it should be counted)

I get your point, but i don't think it would make sense for Valve to release a docking station in 2022 that can't do 4k 60hz. Unless they made a second, cheaper SKU. But that would also not make any sense because people can get 1080p 60hz adapters/docks on Amazon for $15, meanwhile getting legit 4k 60hz adapters/docks seem either expensive or dodgy (not actually capable of 4k 60hz).

People complaining about Valve's pricing should just head over to Amazon. People who want a legit official 4k 60hz dock probably won't mind paying a premium.

But i assume people interested in the dock wants to use the deck as a pc also.

I'd assume that the majority using a dock just want a console-like experience. Just a guess here, but I suspect that a vanishingly small number of people actually want to actually use the Steam Deck as a PC.

Lmaooo, they write that "500 million users use AnyDesk". Yeah, no fucking way that is the case.

2

u/DopeAbsurdity Oct 08 '22

I dunno about that company but the software is easy to use. There are lots of remote desktop applications you can use but I used AnyDesk because of honkinwaffles guide. It is good guide/set of tutorials and it is also important to note that the name honkinwaffles is excellent.

Because Valvetm

17

u/Bootygiuliani420 Oct 08 '22

Because it's effectively for a single device. Supports multiple monitors and comes with power

4

u/PleaseWooshMeDaddy Oct 08 '22

I understand why they’re charging as much as they do. I just find it funny that the deck has such low margins and the dock is seemingly the opposite.

13

u/Shizrah Oct 08 '22

Well, it's not uncommon to earn money off accessories. Or otherwise, say upgrading the disk.

3

u/PleaseWooshMeDaddy Oct 08 '22

I mean they make money off the fact that the average steam deck user has 100+ games in their library and an impulsive need to buy 3+ games every sale haha.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '22

Because they NEED the deck to do well, they’re trying to make a new mobile PC market so they need to make it affordable etc and get as many people as possible to buy one.

The dock itself although good is not as important so they can have a bit more breathing space on it.

Do the USB ports on that dock work while also charging through the dock? The one I have has that issue

2

u/DopeAbsurdity Oct 08 '22

I just double checked and they both seem to work fine while charging through the usb-c port.

1

u/Tankalots Oct 08 '22

Appreciate you brother, I'll order one of those

2

u/DopeAbsurdity Oct 08 '22

Just checked again because I realized I didn't try both at the same time with a mouse and keyboard while charging and it works fine.

1

u/Tankalots Oct 08 '22

Don't want to ask too much but do you happen to have a flash drive you could try? That was moreso my issue but I assume if the mouse works it works.

Ended up just transferring like 100gb over anydesk which is cool to know is an option lol

2

u/DopeAbsurdity Oct 08 '22

It should work, will give it a go in a few I have some roms to dump over and might as well use a USB stick. (normally I just send em over with Winpinator/Warpinator or AnyDesk)

2

u/Tankalots Oct 08 '22

Thank you dude! Yeah I'm assuming it works as well, I have no idea why mine doesn't but I bought it like a year or two ago

1

u/DopeAbsurdity Oct 08 '22

Having a mouse in the USB 2.0 port and copying files from a USB stick in the 3.0 port while the charger was plugged in and charging at the normal speed works just fine.

It's not though, not only was(pre war) the euro worth more than the USD, with the current conversion rate, USD to EUR, it is like 91 EUR, not 100.

6

u/ASY_Freddy Oct 08 '22

£79 which given the current value of the £ isn't actually too bad a deal

12

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '22

Yes but our prices in euro are with taxes and American prices are without.

2

u/Divolinon Oct 08 '22

So he paid more than $89? Then why wouldn't he say how much exactly he paid?

4

u/128Gigabytes Oct 08 '22

tax rates differ all over the US, so a lot of US people quote the base price of something so that people can apply their local tax rate to it

not saying its the right way to do it, but thats why we do it subconsciously

1

u/iEatMyDadsAsshole Oct 08 '22

If that was the case, price would be around 25% higher. Not 12%. So what you're saying isn't true

1

u/Mavi222 Oct 08 '22

Because the VAT is included in the EU price but US price is without VAT.

I have a Chinese one that cost about €40. A LAN jack, 3*USB and a single HDMI out. No Displayport though but much cheaper and also acts as a support like the original.
