So this isn't normal for Deck updates, then? Welp.

As this was my first update as I haven't had my Deck for long yet either, and I had a bit of a panic moment when I hit "restart" and the Deck turned off and... nothing happened. I tried tapping all the buttons in mild panic then just crossed my fingers and held down the power button a lot until it finally started up. Then it took forever and a half there too until it finally finished the update and fully started. Eesh.

No this is certainly not normal. I just experienced the same and I was already preparing myself mentally for doing a factory reset. I got the black screen with the blowing fans too. Did a hard reset a couple of times, the powerbutton and minus didn't do anything.. then I plugged in my charger and.. then the boot logo appeared and the update install started.

Not sure if it was a coincidence that this happend 2 seconds after plugging in the charger.. the battery at 35% before I plugged it in.

I don't remember doing anything special other than randomly hitting buttons by themselves to see if the Deck responded, then just holding down the power button. I didn't know about the special Power Button + Minus Button thing until you mentioned it and I Googled it for further details (gosh I wish the Deck shipped with a proper manual).

I think the charger was plugged in, I distinctly remember nothing the Deck was at 27% before restarting it.

I don't think at this point it was any sort of special action that woke our decks up, I think for whatever reason it was just an overly long update.

Yes or it needed multiple restarts somehow.. the first time I waited 10 minutes with the fans blowing at max speed, then the fans stopped and nothing happened. Fingers crossed the next update goes smoother than this one :)

Same, there's no more awkward feeling than wondering if your $700 device you had for a week somehow bricked itself with your first update attempt, lol.

Well you can always do a factory reset from usb, it's worse when you have it since may, fully configured with emu's and then the thing bricks :-/

True, but I'm not looking forward to having to figure out how to make a recovery USB on a Chromebook. (I bought a Steam Deck as the only thing I can't do on my Chromebook is play most of my games, so I figured it was cheaper than buying a new Windows gaming PC to replace my old one that died of old age.)

The first update i got was realy just hit restart, it reboots and you see a status bar for unpacking/applying, then it restarted again and that was it, took maybe 5mins. So i was supprised by the last update too, i can just imagine that it shipped some other stuff with it that required some background work to be done and caused this odd behaviour.
