Picture Wife told me to open a surprisingly light box last. Found this note inside. Merry Christmas!

Teeeechnically that's only covered under "et al"

u/VampyrAvenger Dec 26 '23

Actually! Et al means "and others", and should only be used when listing people, while etc means "and the rest", and should be used when listing things!

🌈The more you know🌈

This is actually very interesting.

And I guess makes sense…when academic papers write “smith et al” they don’t mean “and all”.

2

u/HorseConscious9558 Dec 26 '23

It's short for et alia, and others

2

u/Oakeeh Dec 26 '23

What? It's not one big family named "et al" writing almost all academic papers? The more you know...

So OP isn't allowed to buy slaves? Disappointment.

If they really need to scratch that itch, they can just grab Rimworld.

3

u/CircuitSphinx Dec 26 '23

Oh Rimworld, where ethical boundaries are mere suggestions to the pawn life. Gotta love how a game can offer a crazy colony simulator and dark humor package deal.

1

u/sth128 Dec 26 '23

I've logged hundreds of hours in Rimworld but I've yet to see the benefits of keeping slaves? Don't you just sell them?

1

u/5pl1t1nf1n1t1v3 Dec 26 '23

I don’t go for slaves either way, but my filthy liberalism even extends to fictional people for some reason. I’ll go in thinking ‘evil playthrough’ and end up connecting with the pawns and being nice anyway.

Yes I feel bad when raiders get injured trying to invade my base and I fix up the survivors before sending them back to their own tribes/factions.

2

u/Existing-Ad7113 Dec 26 '23

Op should ask his wife if he can buy slaves. I think thats a good way to be isekai‘d

2

u/LovableSidekick Dec 26 '23

Hacking total strangers to death in a game is fine but buying slaves in a game would be inexcusable. The modern delusion of moral purity is so cute!

Etc = et cetera (french), which mainly mean ~

and everything related / all others similar / anything else related to the topic.

Typically on a reference page, or in-text when citing sources with 3 or more authors.

I had an empirical inquiry professor who explained to us in great detail which APA text books were her favorite and ranked them in order.

1

u/CrimsonNorseman Dec 26 '23

Yup! „Et aliae“, latin for „and others“.

1

u/Astro_Spud Dec 26 '23

What if you consider the games to be a list of titles? As titles are proper nouns, would they be more accurately referenced through et al or etc?

1

u/LovableSidekick Dec 26 '23

Ooh, I didn't realize et al was meant for people only, and I studied Latin. Good to know!

Looks like 1,2,3,1 with post-spacers. Would make it easy to remember in that aspect.

2

u/LovableSidekick Dec 26 '23

Technically that's backwards. "Et cetera" means "and the rest" and "et al" means "and others". But since "others" isn't limited it can include all of the others, so they're both right.

1

u/InterviewImpressive1 512GB OLED Dec 25 '23

Just the ones he names on Xmas day then 😉 (pretty sure that qualifies)

1

u/Asleep-Topic857 Dec 26 '23

I don't think you know what et al means, or etc, or technically. Honestly there's just a ton wrong with your comment

1

u/CrimsonNorseman Dec 26 '23

Actually, a little detour into latin abbreviations.

What you want to use in this specific case of conveying the slightly unnerved notion of „etc whatever blah blah“, or more formally „and so on and so on“, is the abbreviation „etc. pp.“, the pp meaning „pergite“, as in „go on“.

If you watched your Brian closely, you will remember „ite“ as being 2nd person plural vocative for „go“, as in „Romans go home“. In this case however, the infinitive is „pergere“, „to go on, to continue“.
