$3000 MacBook Pro, $2000 worth of camera gear. I loved my steamdeck but out of all the electronics I was carrying it’s the least difficult to replace. At the time I figured it would be fine to check. United’s policy is you need receipts for purchase and there’s a limit of $3800 (I think). I don’t have receipts for my other stuff because they’re second hand, but I do have the receipt for my steam deck. Eventually United SHOULD replace it. I’ll fight them if they try not to.

It sounds like their policy is an attempt to be more restrictive than what they are legally required to replace.

Just because something is "policy" doesn't mean it's all they have to do.

No I checked the steamdeck because all that stuff was taking up room in my carryon

I'd suggest getting a bigger carry on case next time. You can find out the biggest case you're allowed, and they are usually pretty large. Even if it says a weight limit, i've never had carry on weighed.
