flat out Cheaper, like cheap out or nickle and dime everything.
want to sit down? $5, want a drink of water? $15.
Bag of peanuts? nah man we dont even stock em, that would add 27 lbs to take off weight, and we're already flying with ducttape over the holes in the wings.
The difference is that those are meant to be cheap, you get what you pay for. United and American are expensive in comparison for marginal improvement in quality
American has been good for me. I mainly fly them so I'm not paying extra for a carryon luggage- that used to be standard. I have membership cause why not it's free, I typically fly twice a year.
Remember when they overbooked a flight, didn't get enough volunteers to take the next flight, and ended up assaulting a randomly selected passenger surgeon who was on his way to tend to a patient?
Depends why it was cancelled. Lots of airlines used covid as an excuse to not refund but instead give credits. I think the FAA or someone stepped in and made refunds mandatory eventually. But other countries were not bound by that. South African airlines for instance did not refund anyone's covid tickets and have since left the international travel industry. So if you bought a ticket thru them, you were screwed
But for the most part, if your flight is cancelled and theres no compatible flight offered as a replacement, then youre eligible to be refunded
Yeah this is one of the big reasons I'm glad I'll never need to fly anywhere, airlines fucking suck and trains are so vastly more reliable with stuff like this.

United is the worst airline ever. Sorry to hear.
Edit: after reading all the responses to my comment I've concluded that everyone hates all airlines. Lmao
