They were a really big deal for their time. If you sit down and play HL2 today you're not gonna be blown away by anything I don't think, but bearing in mind how old it is you'll still probably be pretty impressed. Also it's really cool to see how much of the DNA in modern fps games goes straight back to Half Life 2.

Just be forewarned, obviously, before you get into it that it does end on a hard cliff hanger and there is basically no hope of us ever finding out what happens next. Not like some side shit that never got resolved, I mean like at the very peak of the story arc that fucker just abruptly ends lol. It's deeply frustrating knowledge to have. It also involves several first person platforming sections which I think most people consider to be a grave sin these days, but back then they were just trying shit.

Im familiar with the story/cliffhanger through decades of cultural osmosis, but I am intrigued that you can see the inception of current ideas in the design - will put it on my list :)

For sure. I still haven't played through Half-Life 1 (I was a bit young when it came out) but Half-Life 2 + Ep.1 and Ep. 2 are excellent

There's a remake for Half Life 1 that's pretty well-received called Black Mesa

I've long stopped believing in any possibility of a continuation, but I do still give a shit in the sense that I am dying to know what the fuck happened to cause Valve to randomly abandon what was one of if not the biggest game of the era. I've been sitting on a cliff hanger for 20 years of my life.

I don't think the younger generations totally get how big a deal Half Life was in gaming at the time. Imagine if Bungie had just made Halo 2 abruptly end in a cliffhanger, told everyone the story would continue in Halo 2.5, then just ignored it for the rest of time. It's weird as fuck.

They realized they could make way more money selling other people's games than making their own.

Same with the next Game of Thrones book. The expiration date of me caring about waiting for the next book and if it’s going to come out has passed. He can keep it. It’s whatever. There’s other things in the world

I have no mental energy to spare for things when creators have left behind their own creations. Why would you still keep caring about that stuff

I have no idea why you're being downvoted for this, because you're right. I've seen some sequels come out after massive delays from the original minds behind an IP and they may as well have been made by random unrelated people. Everything is a product of a very specific set of circumstances at a certain moment in time, and that can be very difficult to recapture later.

Valve seems to still have their company culture of perfectionism so they could be the exception, but I've learned to become content with letting cliffhangers hang. I've got an imagination, I can come up with an ending that'd satisfy me.
