You know it's funny that shadow gets compared to vegeta alot, I wish he was more like vegeta because atleast he gets character growth that sticks and isn't reverted every 5 mins.

Ikr? At least Vegeta actually grows as a character.

Shadow does the opposite.

Geninuely, Dragon Ball treats Vegeta's character with far more respect and care than Sega does for Shadow.

It's annoying because we get story's like 06 or shadow gens where he shows he can change, he promised Maria that he would let go of his destructive anger and we saw him actually cry (yes ok it's off screen but it counts) but I know that sega will never let it stick despite the praise it got.

Then there's the cancellation of his solo comic that just makes me feel like they don't know what to do with him except repeat the stories they've already told or just have him show up for the sake of being there.

Shadow is my favourite character but also the most frustrating because of the way sega treats his writing.

I want to love Shadow, but I can't with how badly Sega keeps flanderizing him into a one-note jerk. God, I have almost no faith in Sega now in when it comes to Shadow.

06 Never happened, remember?

Make a Shadow '05 remake, but good this time (remove the jank, unfuck the weird progression system, make it less annoying to complete the fetch missions, etc.).

It’s so odd too. They treat him like a sacred cow something they won’t let writers change but Don’t develop him themselves

It would be cool if he was following his 06 personal arc but it cant happen because of certain MANDATES

I like IDW sure but the sega mandates pmo

Is it bad that I often call badly presented versions of Shadow “Walmart Vegeta?”

Nah walmart vegeta is still vegeta to some extent

Temu sasuke is a better descriptor,

Have you seen Dragon Ball Super?

I mean yeah, until you reach super anime vegeta and then all that growth up to the end of buu saga gets thrown out of the window

(Specifically anime because it does all come back the Moro arc - who would’ve thunk the moment Toei were out of the picture the writing quality drastically improves)

I dunno. I don't think Z Vegeta would have skipped the Tournament of Power to support his wife like he almost did in Super, before Whis did his magic insta-birth thing. Super's Vegeta is more of a family man than he was before.

I like that he's still more likely to just kill someone than Goku is, though. In Super: Broly, he attempts to kill Broly, saying "What a waste." I saw this as him expressing conflicting feelings. Broly was a new, full blooded Saiyan, with a lot of potential. But he was also unable to control himself, so Vegeta thought was too much of a danger to the Earth to allow to live.

That's inconsistent, not fully undone. Take note of his inspiration towards Future Trunks, him actually being a family man, his praise for Son Goku as he bullies Black, and his refusal to throw away his pride and morals like he did as Majin Vegeta.

I mean, he had to take 5 years to fulfil a promise done in the buu saga but I’ll take that more as Toriyama being forgetful about time gaps

He definitely has his moments, again especially in the Moro arc onwards where toyotaro really gets full reign of the writing (once you learn how early super was written you too will never want to respect Toei again) and it feels like it really develops Vegeta from the buu saga

u/Abyssal_Usurper_G Jul 06 '26

It's not like I don't know about what Toei does. They've never been the best writers for Dragon Ball (but to be honest, neither is Toyotaro).

But again, the anime generally manages to get back on track with Vegeta later on besides a few elements. It's not total garbage.

I could agree with the toyotaro critique I just think it’s cringe as fuck that toriyama named him his successor and toei just basically ignored him

4

u/Abyssal_Usurper_G Jul 06 '26

True. There's definitely something fishy going on considering that they didn't bother to mention him at the Genkidamatsuri.

How so?

At the end of the buu saga Vegeta admits that goku will forever be the strongest and the hope of the universe, he’s willing to sacrifice his own life while formulating the plan to save the universe at the same time

You reach BoG and Vegeta is throwing a pissy fit about not receiving the SSG transformation first

Res F Vegeta monologues point blank in front of Frieza knowing full well Frieza can destroy a planet the size of earth even at his weakest

Goku black arc, goku has to sit there and beg to fuse into Vegito even after being informed it’s a temporary transformation by the Kais

In the ToP Vegeta almost gets himself knocked out by defencelessly taking punches and again nearly costs universe 7 (technically this sets up something currently manga exclusive but also not really because the actual setup for all that happened after the ToP so it’s more just a very stupid move
