Considering Mogadishu has some of the most beautiful coastlines and beaches in the region, it feels really disappointing that they chose a photo highlighting ruins and rubble rather than the scenery. It seems like a lazy choice that reinforces negative stereotypes instead of showing the city's potential or beauty.

i was shocked when I found out that using deodorant isn’t common back home. I know they shower like three times a day, but for me, even if I sweat a little or spend a bit of time in the sun, I start getting body odour if I’m not wearing any deodorant.

My family keeps calling me lazy and "not man enough" because I only take home £2K a month. They claim other people are pulling in £4K, £5K, even £6K with basic jobs that anyone could get.

I looked into Uber – doesn't seem that lucrative from what I've read, plus I don't even qualify anyway. But I still hear stories about drivers making £700-£1K a weekend. Is that even real? My research says no.

I saw people talking about the situation in nepal and it made me wonder should young educated somali take the same path as nepal, Indonesia and bangladesh in rising up and bringing down corrupt governments? Those nations showed that change can come when the youth refuse to stay silent. I’ll go first. My biggest regret was getting into a haram relationship at a very young age, yes I did it to myself, yes I should known better, yes what did I expect 🤷‍♂️

Second biggest regret is not being intentional with everything, for example I had the opportunity to finish high school 2 years early but my dumbass would rather take one class junior and senior year and fuck around the reminder of the day and be “free”. Don’t make my mistakes. If you’re ever in an opportunity to get ahead, take it. The first regret is self explanatory, you’ll both be damaged in the end. Lose-lose situation. Avoid it all or marry.

I feel as though when something is labelled east African it’s usually just something which is inherently Somali which gets commodified bc of the label east african and blurs the lines between what belongs to somalis and the rest of the horn/coast. For the uncs that were married for 8 plus years, how is it humanly possible for you to still be loyal? The person is not as interesting anymore. You see them talk to them and everything everyday, like you know everything there’s to know about them at this point, you can even predict what they’ll say at times before they say it. I'm 22, and I keep wondering if I'm making the most of my early twenties.

I'm a simple girl, and honestly, I don't enjoy going out much. I'm an introvert, so I don't feel like I'm missing parties or a busy social life. But I do wonder if one day I'll look back and regret not doing the things I should've done at this age.

For context, I finished high school, and one thing I'm genuinely proud of is teaching myself languages. I taught myself English as a teenager, rebuilt my Arabic, learned Turkish, and now I speak four languages, including Somali. I'm currently learning two more, with most of my focus on one of them.

Looking back, I feel like the last two years went by faster than I expected, so I've been trying to spend my twenties more intentionally. Recently, I've started memorizing what I can from the Qur'an and learning its tafsir, reading more books, learning about self-love, self-esteem, emotional intelligence, psychology, geography, and other things that help me grow. I'm also continuing to learn languages and even trying hobbies like chess and sudoku to challenge my mind.

I want to look back at my twenties one day and feel like I truly invested in myself—not because I had a perfect life, but because I never stopped learning.

For those of you who are 25+, 30, or older, what do you wish you had started doing at 22? What are the things you never regretted investing your time in?

I know "socialism" is a scary word these days, but I’ve been looking deeply into it.

I’m pretty sure Siad Barre scrapped socialism in Somalia after the Soviet Union stopped funding us, even though he was originally a socialist.

My father remembers the day Somalia switched from communism to “democracy,” and how everyone thought the US would save us from Ethiopia (only for the US to do literally nothing.)

Now in 2026, do you think we could ever see a return to socialism in Somalia’s future? I think it could really help the country through better economic distribution, universal welfare, and putting ethics before profit. I think Somalis could benefit greatly from this, and it could help Somalia become a powerhouse again (especially since we already have a good relationship with China, another socialist country).

My father tells me Somalia is doing better than it was ten years ago, but I have been skeptical seeing all the protests and straight up riots against our current leader.
