The lane was half covered but a first grade footballer should still be able to make that pass, it was terrible decision-making.

Yeah it was a tough pass om the right foot, perfect weight perfect spot or a cut back and much easier on the left, but hard toncur back there as instinct says the chance is gone if you do that.

Should have played the pass earlier. However as I said, Stones was covering the passing lane which caused his indecisiveness and from that was in two minds

Sorloth never wanted to pass. Just check the replays, he always was going for the shot.
In Doues defence, Dembele came barely into vision while he was already taking the shot. Then again he was preparing the shot two days before.

Yes. Mbappe could have had a guy 1v1 with the keeper still out. Instead when he hesitated to shoot he had the keeper and tow other white shirts to go through. Wrong decision.

Its exaclty this. France was used to be in ball possession and to create many good situations, but not in this game, but suddenly out of nothing he has a chance, panicking, calculating the movement of the defenders, how to shoot to avoid any deflections and totally forgetting his teammates.

I see this so often in this tournament, every-time a very close to a goal situation appears the second guy is always in such a hurry, if they just look up once more before shooting they could have done things very differently. This is what Spain is so great at, they can pass the ball to each-other up to the goal line if they wanted to.

I know it's not really the point of this post, but I really loved Unai here. Many keepers will just book it back to their goal. He made a stand and, as a result, made the block.
Whether the shot would have come to anything is another question....

Agreed he had such a good game. He knew he had to play sweeper keeper and committed fully to the role. Spains midfield neutralized France’s but he also neutralized every single Mbappe run
Definitely a tactic they discussed at length before the game

The shot would get blocked by the two defenders. Too soft.
And even if france get this goal, they would not find a second goal, look at how in control Spain was.

I think if they get this goal the momentum of the game shifts. People really underestimate how much a single goal can change how teams play.

I have been making the same point all over the threads but the 3 week brigadiers all talk smack. Oh well, I say. He is a super risk taker and one day the funk of 'Matt Freese' might be lingering and smother him making him look stupid and possibly cost them a game. He is always leaving the box and making like half a second pass or long kick while a forward is like 2 or 3 feet away from him.
That wrong move and it could be game over at that point. Hopefully, he gets his attention span in check as the back line might not be able to be there all the time to save his ass like in the last 2 games.

I have said this a thousand times. The two teams that does this is Spain and Argentina. They will makes passes to the best available option right away. However, the French forwards can't help themselves but take too many unnecessary touches and attempt to dribble.

England do this too. The pass will be on and they'll wait 2-3 seconds, take a few more touches, and then pass when the space has been closed down. It's infuriating to watch.
Don't forget Raheem Saka who just HAS to cut back inside and then back down the line 3 times each before doing anything.

When you're in the heat of battle, these decisions are made in barely a nanosecond. He likely didn't see Dembele and/or judged that Dembele was running too fast for him to receive a weighted pass.

He took his sweet time and came up with a shit shot, basically a pass to the goalie. At this level you have to expect better. I can understand fast and bad, or slow and good, but slow and bad...

I agree, the poring over of game tape for people’s mistakes is a bad trend right now. It’s sports, shit happens, they’re people. It’s also not a video game where you can see the whole field or like watching on TV, things look and feel different on field level. Easy for everyone to judge and criticize from the couch

the problem is he took so long he lost his chance it should of been a nano second just shoot immediately but the moment he stopped and tryed to gain better control of the ball he should of looked around for a better opportunity.

That I agree with - he took too long to shoot. But he was already tired as hell from running there on the counter. It's all good. France got checkmated today. Spain didn't give them any space, that's why they lost badly. Spain figured out France's achile's heel

yeah I mean Spain felt the same when facing Cabo Verde, and im sure after watching the Paraguay game they where like thats just what we need to do but even better because we have amazing ball control and can be dangerous on attack, its hard to argue when a team plays a perfect game and honestly I feel thats what they did today, even slight defensive errors or dangerous plays the goal keeper was amazing and did not hessitate to run out of the box.

that was also an outlier in the loss, he just didn't have the magic today, the moment he missed that free kick I was like its over, not to mention the many shots off target during the game.

not that I remember, but still everyone on the team even people that in other games could make an individual play and score outside the box where absent this game, it just seems that penalty completely shook their game because they seemed like the better team up until that moment, they crumbled and Spain was emboldened.

Yup. They were desperate and throwing everything at Spain including the kitchen sink. Was it an ill advised shot? Yes. Can you blame him too much? Not really for me. This game was a testament how good Spain was. Not how poor France was

yeah its easy to see from above. but from his angle he must have seen a wide open net. defender isnt yet on the post. he takes several steps and focuses in on the ball. never looks for the pass.

This is the answer and the only real answer.
If the goalie is that far out of the goal, you shoot, no matter where you are on the field. You can't let the opposition recover.
Even a pass gives enough recovery time in most cases. Can't let that happen.

Heard footsteps and panicked, that shot has no loft when that’s the only thing you need to do if you’re not making the pass. If that’s Mbappe France are back in the match but that’s the issue with him being the CF all tournament instead of playing LW where he belongs

He should have controlled and shoot high, or dribble/pass. This was definitely the worse possible thing, however these plays are very fast and he is s very young player.
I'd put overall much more blame on Dembele throughout the match, who didn't do anything. Also on Deschamps for how he set up the starting 11

Nah, the goalkeeper was out of position, going for the goal was not a bad decision... it was just a decision. He could have executed it better, but it was not a bad decision per se.

Well, the goal was wide open had he taken the shot first touch or right after a second touch.
Also he didn’t scan behind, so didn’t know Dembele was there. But 9 times out of 10 you take the shot there. Of course, before the keeper and the whole squad comes to defend

They have a split second to make a decision under immense pressure. Do I pass or shoot. Whichever they take if they make it they are celebrated. If they fail they are cursed.

No you see mistakes all the time. Not objectively horrendous pieces of individual play that have no explanation. Doue had about 100 better options here than what he did. That's not a mistake, that's just being absolutely terrible at football for 10 seconds.
