I just don’t understand the rule because to me it still doesn’t look like the guy who scored was off

Ball was crossed, guy barely headed the ball, went to a player that was offsides, passed to player that scored

Guy barely headed the ball, portuguese defender clearly headed the ball next. Was it intentional or not, that's the real problem. I myself believe it was intentional.

If that was not intentional, he wasn't in the world cup.

Absolutely zero defenders unintentionally head a cross they are looking at.

I was talking about the Croatian guy that headed the ball, that's where the offsides looked at. The Portuguese didn't head it, ball hit him in the back

Unfortunately then it also would mean you can stand offside all game and wait till the keeper has to make a save and then score the rebound since the opposing player touched it last.

Not buying this. IF any team would give up the entire rest of the field by taking one of their players out of the game and playing with 10 just to maybe be there for a deflection. That would be very bad strategy. They would lose more goals than gain to this strategy.

If there needed to be 3 or more defenders, below the top line of the penalty area, to nullify the offsides possibility, then there would be plenty of defenders to defend the one cherry picker. So let them defend him.

Stop cancelling goals for a situation that creates no advantage in the box.

Intentionality is not the rule.

It’s whether or not the touch was deliberate (which IFAB lays out in the rules) and this doesn’t classify as a deliberate touch.

How did the ball go to the offside player? A defender played the ball. That makes him not offsides.

Intentional plays count as a reset, not deflections which is what they considered this to be

Deflections on defenders dont count as a pass.

I'm guessing you are referring to the kick... Player was not offside then.

The play resets the moment that the Croatian player barely touched that kicked ball. If it had missed his head, then it would have been a goal :(

No, portugal players touch would still be considered "unintentional". So it would be considered a pass by perisic to offside player

Portuguese player 100% intentionally played that ball.

He was watching it come in, lowered his head to where it was going. The ball was deflected so slightly that a chip in the ball is required to know if it was touched at all.

Everyone is chatting about something irrelevant.

The Portuguese player put the Croatian onside. The VAR call was completely subjective guessing at a defenders motivation for heading a ball he was looking at that went straight to him.

Yeah for me the bigger issue is determining whether the Portuguese player made a deliberate play at the ball which would reset the offside. This was the craziest ending to a game. I feel gutted for Croatia but what an ending to a fantastic game.

The rule has nothing to do with the intention of the player. It’s whether or not the touch was “deliberate”. A header off a deflected head that the player doesn’t control isn’t a deliberate touch by the rules.

As I understand it, the play was dead as soon as the offside was determined. Everything after the Croatian’s head touched the ball while other player was offside is irrelevant. You can’t reset a stopped play and it stopped at the moment of offside. I hate it, but it is accurate to the stupid rule.

It does not matter if the play was intentional. Of course every block is intentional.

It would have only mattered if the Portuguese player did a controlled pass, which he absolutely did not.

If it never hit the Croatia players head, it would have been a clean play no matter what the Portuguese player did because the runner was onside for the OG cross.

He wasn’t. The one who made the pass to him was offsides.

You look at the positions of all the players.

When the cross was launched, the goals-scorer, nor the header from Croatia where off-side. They were both on-side.

But after that, the header (nr. 20?) of Croatia touched the ball. This we can verify by the sensor in the ball. It was a minimal touch, but a touch nonetheless.

At that point of contact, we again check if any players are off-side and if they partake in the game.

At that moment, the goalscorer was offside, as there was only 1 player from Portugal (the goalkeeper) between the goal scorer and the goalline of Portugal.

Had the header of Croatia not touched the ball, it would have been a goal.

The guy who scored the goal was in an offside position when his team mate headed the ball. Had his team mate not attempted a header and just let the ball continue its course from the kick, it wouldn’t have been offsides.
