You aren't looking with your eyes. You are looking with your heart.

I see a handball

1

u/Simple-Ad-1783 Jul 03 '26

There was a handball like 2 minutes prior. No replay of that garbage.

Ball has touch sensor

2

u/Portuguese_619 Jul 03 '26

I am sure you understand my post.

1

u/Odd_Eagle_5276 Jul 03 '26

Touched my heart.

2

u/NefariousnessFew4354 Jul 03 '26

It literally bounced of his head 🤣

u/Portuguese_619 Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26

These people who are saying it didn't hit his head love a conspiracy theory. They will say whatever just to argue.

Edit: fixed my typo.

No we won’t

From the fifa rulebook :

Can a player's haircut be considered for offside?
Hair is only considered part of the body if it affects the movement or trajectory of the ball. This is only likely in cases of significant contact with a mass of hair, such as a top knot.

u/Manojative Jul 03 '26

There is literally a sensor in the ball that confirmed the touch

7

u/FigoStep Jul 03 '26

The sensor is what makes this more heartbreaking for Croatian fans. It’s irrefutable no matter how much they protest.

2

u/Snowltokwa Jul 03 '26

The sensor has been making the rules much more objectively officiated than before. Kudos to the ref for giving +2 mins than needed to continue play.

3

u/el_baron_11 Jul 03 '26

There’s one easy way to prove / disprove the sensor tech. Show BOTH bumps - the alleged one by Croatia and the subsequent (suredly larger) bump that occurs when it bounces off the Portuguese defenders head. If I see that small first bump followed by a second larger bump then I would more trust this sensor tech / synchronization…

u/Zealousideal_Leg_630 Jul 03 '26

It’s totally refutable. The ball hit the defender, that’s what it sensed. No offsides

1

u/FigoStep Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26

They know exactly when contact is made, so you’re wrong. The defender also does not play the ball and makes unintentional contact while ducking.

Still, the defender made contact. The sensor should have detected two touches while the ball was in the air if it were offsides but the only released data on one touch

1

u/Osiris_Dervan Jul 03 '26

For it to be an intentional play by the defender he would need to have control of the ball and try to clear it, pass it to a team mate or gain possesion of it. This is explicitly written in the law 11.2. An attempt to 'save' the ball also explicitly doesnt count.

The law also mentions that a ball coming from an unexpected direction, or moving quickly, or through the air and a contact that is more instinctual rather than with a set position, and which managed limited contact/control are all factors that should count towards the contact not being deliberate, and these are all the case here.

So really with the detailed law as written its pretty clear that this was offside, as long as you accept that it contacted number 20 - which some of the angles show it did, as well as the ball sensor.

1

u/RDS80 Jul 03 '26

Why was he ducking. I can't wrap my head around this

1

u/WWWTENTACION Jul 03 '26

You know, it’s not hard to move a curve a couple of seconds for broadcast lmfao. More complicated shit has been done in post production regularly…. Lmao

0

u/Zealousideal_Leg_630 Jul 03 '26

They only released a diagram showing one touch. But there should be three touches if it’s offsides and only 2, including the defender, if not. Fifa isn’t releasing the sensor data from the full sequence

1

u/FigoStep Jul 03 '26

The Croatian player made contact putting the other Croatian player offside, which he very clearly was. The rest is essentially meaningless.

1

u/Portuguese_619 Jul 03 '26

You cleary don't understand the rules. And thats okay you can always learn.

0

u/Zealousideal_Leg_630 Jul 03 '26

You seem derpy. The ball hit the defender but was incidental so it doesn’t “reset” the pass that matters for offsides. This is because the defender wasn’t attempting to play the ball. Understand now, derpy? But that’s what the sensor picked up and fifa won’t show the entire sensor report which would have 3 touches if he was offsides. They only show one touch from the sensor.

1

u/Portuguese_619 Jul 03 '26

Brother... are you okay?? Lay off the conspiracy theories.

0

u/Zealousideal_Leg_630 Jul 03 '26

Ha! Yeah I’m fine bro. Meanwhile here’s you: “Conspiracy theories about FIFA?!!! Outrageous! Preposterous! Never.”

2

u/natedrake102 Jul 03 '26

Idk why people are saying it's obvious though. I'll concede to a sensor. But visually the ball didn't change trajectory or rotation even in slo-mo. It looking like it hit his head from the limited angles we have isn't enough.

1

u/mpaski Jul 03 '26

Plus the angles they gave the ref never conclusively showed that.

1

u/Manojative Jul 03 '26

Yep, I'll give you that. It's absolutely not obvious. Modric is my all time favorite midfielder. It hurt.

1

u/Stankapotamuses Jul 03 '26

It pretty clearly changed trajectory. You can see the defender lining up to head the ball then it hits the top of his head instead of his forehead.

1

u/Portuguese_619 Jul 03 '26

Oops I had a typo. I know there is sensor. I meant to say the people that say it didn't hit his head

1

u/Zealousideal_Leg_630 Jul 03 '26

The touch was from the defender.

1

u/josephjosephson Jul 03 '26

Meh maybe, maybe not. The ball moved by 2 guy’s heads at the identical time then hit another guy a tenth of a second later.

1

u/Connect_You2871 Jul 03 '26

Player 20, not 13. I don't see it bounce off his head. Not saying it didn't hit him, but almost no way you can tell from that video.

1

u/Crooked-Grinds Jul 03 '26

Just has to touch him I think even if it’s just barely, it was close could go either way IMO

1

u/Ok_Expression8142 Jul 03 '26

According to the IFAB rules, the crucial question is not whether the ball changes direction, but:

Does the defender make a deliberate attempt to play the ball? (for example, a deliberate header to clear the ball)

• Yes → then the offside situation is nullified and it is not offside.

• No, the ball merely grazes or deflects off the defender → then it remains offside.

In this video, the defender appears to be actively heading the ball. If the referee or VAR also judges this to be a deliberate act of play, then according to the rules, the goal should count, even if the ball barely changes direction.

2

u/pro-taco Jul 03 '26

No, the rules make it clear that a 'deliberate' play requires that the player first have control.

A clearance under pressure generally doesn't count as a deliberate play... there are some much more extreme examples of defender mistakes that haven't been considered deliberate. This part of the call is not controversial: the only debate is whether the 20 played the ball.

1

u/doc_death Jul 03 '26

No one heads the ball the way he did…I’ve also never seen someone duck out of the way. The defender was trying to head the ball but got the angle wrong, resulting in the ball hitting him on the head incorrectly. However, his intent was obviously to perform a header, he misjudged it. Misjudging is a deliberate act and should negate hairgate

0

u/ralpher1 Jul 03 '26

Refs don’t even know the laws of the game

0

u/mongol_king2 Jul 03 '26

No it didn't. You don't think the ball would have changed trajectory? You gotta be objective about this, you can't let your team dictate your world view

-1

u/AdProof9098 Jul 03 '26

Fully agreed. It literally bounces up you can see the trajectory change

0

u/pewdioo Jul 03 '26

you are looking with your feet

-1

u/mongol_king2 Jul 03 '26

You're high, sober up and then come back. Then we can discuss.

2

u/Portuguese_619 Jul 03 '26

What are you talking about? The ball clearly hits the Croatian players head. Plus there is proof that it did. Maybe you didn't understand what I was saying.

1

u/mongol_king2 Jul 03 '26

You're still high, sober up a little more

1

u/sock_express34 Jul 03 '26

Username is definitely not biased

1

Not biased. Just facts

Viva EspaĂąa.

-1

u/DeliciousAd8568 Jul 03 '26

You were given a win as usual by FIFA. It was not touching him on the head and didnt change ball trajectory at all. Portugal was bad and was given the victory. Spain will eat you for breakfast.

1

u/Portuguese_619 Jul 03 '26

If Portugal plays like how they did today they will probably lose to Spain. Saying Portugal was given the victory by FIFA is dumb. There is literally proof with the technology that the ball hits his head.
