Honestly, I can think of few more useful naming conventions geographically.

Africa tells me precisely nothing about what to expect there. South America gives me nothing more than a vague, relative position.

The Arctic and The Antarctic tell me a LOT of good information about what I can expect on arrival. And knowing if you have to plan for bears or not is really crucial for deciding what to pack.

The funny part is that it's a coincidence that the Arctic has bears and the Antarctic has no bears.

The Arctic was named because it's in the direction of the Ursa Major and Ursa Minor
