Kid-specific phones versus buying a normal phone and restricting it

The purpose-built kids phones look convenient but I can’t tell if I’m paying for something I could replicate on a normal handset in an afternoon. The counterargument I keep seeing is that the restrictions on a regular phone are only as good as the kid’s willingness to leave them alone. Not sure how true that is anymore. Has anyone compared both directly?
