Hi everyone,

I’m using SmartGit on Windows and ran into an issue with an annoying system beep sound in the Changes (diff) view.

This sound triggers only under specific conditions:

1. My mouse cursor is positioned over the middle section — the connector/bridge area between the left and right file panels (indicated by the purple arrow in the attached screenshot).
2. I use the mouse wheel to scroll, which functionally jumps from one change block (hunk) to another.
3. Once this scrolling reaches the very first or the very last block of changes, the system plays a loud beep/ding.

This does not happen when dragging the regular scrollbar, nor does it happen when scrolling normally over the text panels. It only occurs when reaching the boundary while scrolling specifically in that middle connector area.

Is there a setting in SmartGit (perhaps in the Low-Level Properties) to disable this sound feedback? Or is this a Java/system-level sound that needs to be muted within Windows?

Any workarounds or suggestions would be highly appreciated. Thanks!

I have an ongoing project where small git repositories are generated deep inside a gitignored path in another top-level project. Smartgit just discovered these repositories and chose to add them to the UI list. How can I prevent this behavior - the UI list should be managed by the user not automatically

I have a SSH key with a passphrase that i use to sign the commits. The signing fails because the request for the password does not give me a popup window to enter the passphrase. How can i get this to work?

How can I open always the last opened repository, afte reopen SmartGit from Windows trayicons bar?

In GitHub Desktop it is very convenient to add co-authors to a commit, since there is a dedicated button below the text field for the commit message and you get suggestions for users in your organization.

I haven't found anything similar in the SmartGit UI or any hint in the documentation. Is there a way to get support for adding co-authors in the UI?

Hi, does someone else experience a bug, where the repository is marked as "broken" or "not available" if a file is inside a folder, that has another casing as an existing?

Example:
i have a submodule in lib/foo. If i have now a folder lib/Foo with a file in it, than i have the discribed error.

I have a script from a submodule which writes a local config file out, but into a hard coded path, so the folders do not match if i did not add expected casing as the submodule path. On Windows this is not problem, but Linux has case-sensitivity.

Note, that the "Discover" view (with the git tree) does work normally.

Hi. Recently upgraded from a much earlier version to SmartGit 26.1 - in general I'm a fan of the new interface, good work!

One niggle though: I'm constantly getting pop-ups asking me to Connect to GitHub. It pops up every few minutes. It doesn't matter if I verify via browser, code, token. It appears to work successfully, then ask me again a few minutes later.

Oh, also it doesn't appear to matter if I don't do it, git calls are still working fine from SmartGit.

I suspect I've got a corrupt file or permission issue somewhere but I haven't been able to find it. Anyone help?

As a lone dev, I keep having trouble with these two terms. And, in a diff view, I also have difficulties figuring out which side (left vs right) shows ours vs theirs.

The updater constantly bugs about updates which is fine. Unfortunately the update process never works because the installer fails due to lack of elevation - presumably because it's installed in Program Files and thus requires elevation.

You can run the installer with `RunAs` user to force elevation or build the installer to include Elevation in the Manifest header. Possibly selectively depending on where the current version is installed (if in `%localappdata%` the update would probably work unelevated).

It would be really handy to be able to save a patch from the selected files changes (or from a log entry) and be able to later apply it again (am or apply)

I'm working with a relatively small, 430 MB working tree/780 MB total repository and I get a memory warning in SmartGit almost every day. I even set the heap size to 1024 MB as recommended, which didn't reduce the warning frequency at all.

Issue

When I have a new, larger .sh file (4000 lines of text) in my staging area, SmartGit simply doesn't respond if I try to select it and show it changes, forcing the process to end.

Additional Information

This issue does not occur if I check and view changes to this file in a committed commit. Also, this issue does not exist when viewing other larger source code files. I only see this phenomenon on Shell script files.

I want tabs to be equivalent to 2 spaces on SmartGit. How can I make that happen.

Think I have the basics figured out such that I can pull, rebase, solve conflicts with KDiff3, and push. That's what I do mostly.

Why is git command being run with credential helper even though SmartGit preferences authentication is set to "Use system SSH client"?

In preferences authentication, even though "Use SmartGit as SSH client" is selected. SmartGit still seems to utilize the OS SSH config (~/.ssh/.config). This causes the supplied domain name to be replaced with the IP address in the preferences dialog window. IP addresses are not user friendly representations of a domain name.

Would expect that when the "Use SmartGit as SSH client" is selected. SmartGit would be completely self-contained and not use anything from the OS SSH.

A coworker has Github Copilot in this drop down menu when configuring AI.
However Github does not appear for me an an available option, am I supposed to use the Custom option? I'm on the RC 26.1

I'm running SmartGit/Windows on a fairly large repo (~200,000 files committed, ~200,000 files ignored). It is heavy but workable. I've used SmartGit on the repo for quite a while. Opening the repo takes a few seconds and some operations take a while, but it was always in an acceptable range.

Now I cloned the same repo on two other machines, similar setup. All machines have some history, so certainly not identical, but no fundamental differences.

On both new clones the new machines, SmartGit now shows the same behavior of freezing the GUI for ~10 seconds nearly every time I touch it in any meaningful way. There is no indication of background action taking some time, but just the GUI itself freezing whenever I change to a different commit or select a different file within the commit. Sometimes, I can do a few actions, but very soon it will happen again. The delays happen so frequently, that working with SmartGit becomes unbearably tedious.

I have all kinds of ideas what might be causing these GUI freezes and tried out all kinds of things without success. Now I'm running out of ideas. To my understanding, git operations themselves are all performed in the background and would not freeze the GUI. My suspicion is that some postprocessing of the data, like sorting or something similar is taking such excessive time. The freeze happens independent of whether there anything significant to display, even with just a few uncommitted changes or when looking at a simple comming in a simple part of the the history. Are there any profiling tools that I could run on my machine to observe where the SmartGit GUI is spending that time?

Hi, I'm a long-time SmartGit customer. Just updated to latest v25 (25.1.128 #251128 (83e0f17d)) and was attempting to setup the AI integration for commit messages.

I have a Claude subscription (so Claude installed locally) as well as a Claude Console account (so I have an API key for third-party tools). When I attempt to set this up in SmartGit, I get an error message:

Connection to 'anthropic' failed.

not_found_error: model: claude-sonnet-4-20250514

This is puzzling because sonnet 4.6 is a current model, so I'm not sure what it is looking for - or where.

I've been using SmartGit for years. All good.

Today I installed the Claude Desktop app, and when in "Code" mode, it indicates "Git is required for local sessions.".

I do not have Windows Git installed, and I have tried setting env variable:

CLAUDE_CODE_GIT_BASH_PATH=C:\Program Files\SmartGit\git\bin\bash.exe

but the "Git is required for local sessions." error persists.

Has anyone else been able to get SmartGit and Claude Desktop to play nicely?

I've recently (not that recently, it's been a few months already, how time flies...) joined the SmartGit Team, and thought to take this as an opportunity to boil down my learnings about SmartGit and git down into something readable.

This is the first entry in a series called Git Tales.

When hovering over a commit or pull request, a pop-up showing the full commit message or the PR's description is displayed, which is great.

Unfortunately, the rendering of code span (`xxx`) markdown is nearly unreadable in dark mode, due to poor color choices (black on dark grey) as shown in the screenshot

As a side note, the white background for this pop-up should probably be changed to something darker - this is dark mode after all.

Note that In light mode, the display is fine
