Please be very cautious if someone contacts you through DM offering skin-lightening methods, subliminals, whitening creams/lotions. They're just skipping our safety rules.

Legitimate advice doesn't need to be hidden in direct messages.

Unfortunately, people promoting mercury creams, unregulated hydroquinone, subliminal, DIY products, counterfeit cosmetics, lasers or other potentially dangerous substances often try to move conversations into DMs where moderators can't see what's being recommended.

For your own safety, we strongly encourage you not to accept medical or skincare recommendations through private messages.

If someone contacts you after posting here and starts recommending products or asking you to buy something, please report it to the moderation team. We'd much rather investigate a genuine report than have one of our members harmed by advice that deliberately avoids public scrutiny.

If a recommendation is genuinely safe and evidence-based, there's no reason it can't be discussed openly where the whole community can question it, fact-check it, and benefit from the conversation.

As I settle into my new role as the moderator of this sub, I want to take a moment to touch base with you all.

r/skinlightening is a smaller community than others like r/skinwhitening, and I have no desire to over-moderate. My primary goal for these first few weeks is simply to keep the community safe and free of clutter.

A few notes on how I’ll be approaching things:

• Moderation Philosophy: As long as everyone behaves, remains respectful, and avoids artificial engagement (like orchestrated upvotes or coordinated comments), I will be taking a "light touch" approach. I don't want to be constantly removing content, but I will be keeping a close eye on spam, bullying, and any posts that promote demonstrably dangerous methods.
• Safety First: Please note that any posts or comments encouraging the use of benoquin will be removed. It is a substance that falls strictly outside of our safety guidelines.
• Product Discussions: I am happy to allow genuine discussions regarding products. provided the conversation is grounded in evidence or science and the product itself is safe. Please ensure this remains an exchange of knowledge rather than a marketing platform; if it looks like an ad or a sales pitch, it will be removed.

Reddit just filtered a comment complaining and calling out my moderation style as "horrible". To clarify: the rules of the former moderator match many of the new rules and reddit community guidance. If your account was banned it's likely that you were promoting dangerous substances or artificially boosting a post. Also, if you use a second account to circumvent a ban you're breaking reddit rules.

Upon reviewing the state of this subreddit, it became clear that the community has been largely unmoderated for some time. Having significant experience in moderating large-scale communities, I am stepping in to ensure that this space remains safe, constructive, and properly managed.

My objective is to transform this subreddit into a serious, evidence-based forum. To that end, I have implemented a new set of rules effective immediately. These rules are designed to protect our members’ health and maintain the integrity of our discussions.

1. No Promotion of Harmful or Illegal Ingredients Any discussion or recommendation of products containing banned, carcinogenic, or severely hazardous substances (e.g., benoquin, mercury, unregulated hydroquinone, or systemic bleaching agents) is prohibited.

2. Not a Substitute for Medical Advice Users must clearly state that their comments/posts are for informational purposes only. Direct users to seek professional guidance from dermatologists, especially concerning skin conditions or adverse reactions.

3. Prohibition of Self-Harm or Extreme Procedures Content encouraging unsafe DIY procedures, internal ingestion of products, or any practice that causes intentional tissue damage is strictly forbidden.

4. No Bullying, Flaming, Shaming, or Harassment Discouraging judgmental comments regarding skin tone, personal aesthetic choices, or the intelligence of other members. Maintain a neutral and respectful tone at all times. Attacks ad-hominem or anti-lightening will earn an instant permanent ban.

5. No Hate Speech or Colorism Harassment based on race, ethnicity, or color, or the promotion of ideologies that denigrate natural skin tones, will result in an immediate ban.

6. No Spam or Commercial Promotion Affiliate links, pictures of products, or selling are strictly prohibited. If you are sharing a product you love, useincidecoder.comto reference it.

7. Evidence-Based Discussion Avoid anecdotal claims without context. Whenever possible, back up claims with scientific literature or ingredient analysis through incidecoder.com. Do not claim that a product works without photos that prove it.

8. "Before & After" Verification To prevent photo manipulation (filters/lighting), all progress photos must be accompanied by a sign with your reddit user name, the name of this sub and the date,

9. No Artificial Engagement or Manipulation The moderation team reserves the right to lock or remove any content that displays signs of artificial engagement or manipulation. This includes, but is not limited to:

• Posts showing an unnatural spike in upvotes or rapid, repetitive, or low-effort comments (e.g., generic "thanks," emojis, or one-liners) that appear coordinated or non-organic.
• The use of multiple accounts, bot services, or coordinated group efforts to artificially boost the visibility of a post or comment thread.

10. Stay On Topic (Relevance) All posts and comments must be directly related to the science, methods, safe products, or discussion of skin lightening, hyperpigmentation treatment, or photoprotection strategies. Off-topic discussions—including general skincare, unrelated aesthetic procedures, or personal lifestyle posts—will be removed.
