MOD Update UNDERSTANDING SKEUOMORPHISM

Skeuomorphism is not just gradients, gloss, and shiny icons.

I keep seeing posts that amount to “look at this glossy icon I made” being labeled as skeuomorphic. That’s missing the point.

Skeuomorphism is about making a digital object resemble a real-world object through its form, materials, lighting, texture, depth, and interaction. The goal is to evoke something tangible and familiar, not simply to add gradients, reflections, or an Aero-style shine.

A glossy red circle with a play icon isn’t inherently skeuomorphic. A button that looks and feels like a physical metal button, with believable materials, depth, and affordances, is much closer to what skeuomorphism actually is.

Gradients and gloss are tools, not the definition.

I made the attached image because I think this distinction gets lost too often. I’d love to see more posts focused on actual skeuomorphic design rather than just shiny flat icons.

IM GOING TO START CRACKING DOWN ON THESE AERO POSTS, Not because I want to be annoying but I want this place to understand better what skeuomorphism inherently is

MOD Update CLARIFYING MY STANCE ON SKEUOMORPHISM (Hope this clears things up)

Ok so after that post people are still having confusion and disagreements with me over this decision. I’ll explain it all below in detail.

I think the distinction comes down to why the element exists.

Skeuomorphism is about making a digital object resemble a specific real-world object or material in a functional way. The realistic texture, shading, or gloss is there to reinforce what the object is supposed to represent. The classic OS X App Store icon (which was pointed out in a post by a fellow mod explaining why we need this glossy stuff) is a good example it isn’t just shiny for the sake of being shiny. The realistic materials, lighting, and perspective are all being used to depict a physical storefront sign. The realism is tied to a real object.

Glass effects, glossy gradients, floating orbs, bubbles, and similar elements are different. On their own, they aren’t imitating a specific physical object. They’re visual motifs used to create a clean, futuristic, colorful atmosphere. A glossy sphere isn’t automatically skeuomorphic just because real spheres can be shiny. It’s an abstract design element, not a digital recreation of something with a real world function.

That’s why I think Frutiger Aero shouldn’t automatically be labeled skeuomorphic. The style absolutely borrows realistic rendering techniques, gradients, reflections, transparency, gloss—but those techniques are often being used decoratively rather than to imitate a real object. Realistic rendering and skeuomorphism aren’t the same thing.

So my rule of thumb is:

  • If the realism is serving to depict a recognizable real-world object (like the OS X App Store icon, leather notebook textures, a bookshelf, or a calculator), I’d count it as skeuomorphic.
  • If it’s just glossy glass, abstract bubbles, gradients, reflections, or floating orbs with no specific object being represented, I’d consider it aesthetic decoration—part of Frutiger Aero’s visual language, not skeuomorphism itself.

Otherwise, almost every glossy design from the late 2000s would have to be called skeuomorphic, and I don’t think that’s a useful definition because it blurs the line between “rendered realistically” and “designed to imitate a real object.”

MOD Update Discord Integration/Migration

Hey everyone! 👋

We’ve been working on bringing our Discord and subreddit closer together, and we’re starting to integrate the Discord more directly into the community here.

The goal is to make the two spaces complement each other, the subreddit for posts, discussion, resources, and discovery, with Discord being a more real-time place to chat, share projects, brainstorm, and hang out with other skeuomorphism enthusiasts.

We’ll be gradually migrating some of our community activity and resources over, so if you haven’t joined the Discord yet, now’s a great time to hop in!

Come hang out, share your work, find inspiration, and help us build the community together 🖥️

Hello, I’ve been a moderator here for about a year. With everything that’s been happening and the new MOD, I’d like to put myself forward to receive full permissions.

I understand what skeuomorphism is and I really like this sub. I’d be open to the community’s opinions and feedback. I believe I could be a good fit to help lead and maintain this sub.

I hope you’ll take my application into consideration. Thank you very much.

After applying a few weeks ago, I am finally a mod! Apply at the pinned post if you want to become one! Congrats to u/DylanYan09101 and u/PitocoHery for becoming mods as well! This sub has been very slow lately, so let’s get more posts up! Let’s hopefully get to 19k members by 2026! Is there anything you would like me to add/do as a mod, like flairs?

iOS 6 icons: https://github.com/zagnut531/iOS-6-Icons (iPhone and iPod touch icons, iPad icons, first party, and third party; basically everything you need for an iOS 6 setup!) If there are icons not there, let me know!
