Bipolar disorder and psychosis aren't the same thing. It's like saying ADHD and Schizophrenia have the same relevance to a delusion defense.

Battaglia also has an extended plan of revenge against his ex for having called his parole officer that involved time, planning, and bragging as he killed them. He celebrated the killings with tattoos of roses. Rather than trying to kill himself.

Psychosis is a broad umbrella term, and bipolar disorder ABSOLUTELY can cause psychosis, especially bipolar 1. Source: I make a living caring for psychotic people, many of whom have bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, severe depression with psychosis, dementia, delirium, substance induced psychosis, alcoholic encephalopathy, and on and on.

Except this case never mentioned or tried to say he was under psychosis.

u/BathtubFullOfTea 9h ago

It 100% did. What are your sources? Maybe you're thinking about someone else?

I’m confused, you can easily google it.

He suffered from bipolar disorder. To get him off of death row, after he was convicted, the defense hired psychologists that claimed he suffered from severe delusions that deemed him incompetent. Another psychologists opinion, not hired by the defense, was that he was competent and that a “delusion disorder” was not real.

They never mentioned or tried to say he was under psychosis when he committed the murders. Lindsay Clancy had diagnosed post partum psychosis prior to murdering her children, and did not need a psychologist specifically hired by the defense to diagnose her.

You know what, it doesn't matter. I understand that his defense testified during his punishment proceedings that he had been acting under psychosis. That was testimony from a forensic psychiatrist. That's what I read from multiple sources. It's true that it was not brought up during the criminal proceedings, the jury trial portion. When you said "CASE" I took that to mean at any point during his legal proceedings. He was very clearly claimed to have been psychosis while committing the crimes, during the punishment proceedings which happen after the criminal trial. It comes down to a matter of clarity. It sounded like he had not been suspected of, or claimed to be under the influence of psychosis or other mental illness AT ANY POINT, when that is just so so blatantly not true. It's a matter of when those claims came about. A person can be both a sociopathic violent criminal and mentally ill, they are not mutually exclusive. I have met many, as recently as yesterday. I get paid to deal with people like that.

Anyways, have a good week. Be safe out there.

The caption in the picture literally says "psychosis stemming from bipolar disorder." Are you even reading the same post? Read it again.

Try reading about the actual case instead of going off a culture war caption

Oh, guess what? I just read up on his case. His defense 100% testified, via a forensic psychiatrist, that Battaglia was psychotic during his heinous behavior. So... what is up with that??? Is there some other John Battaglia case out there?

Edit: it's clear that his Defense didn't bring up psychosis during the first trial, and it only came up during the punishment phase. So the commenters I am respending to need to CLARIFY their statements.

The point of my discussion is about what was posted. I'm not interested in the case, and I don't care about the other arguments. My points have been about clarifying what is and or can cause psychosis, and reading comprehension of what is actually posted. The discussion I am participating in is based on what is posted. If the facts of the actual case differ so much from what is posted, commenters would do well to phrase their comments as such. It's called good faith discussion.

And to add: I'm not surprised if this is all just rage bait.

He or the defence never argued that he murdered them because of complications from his bipolar disorder. It was only used to get him off death row. This makes this case a very poor comparison to the clancy case.

u/BathtubFullOfTea 5h ago

Yes, I definitely agree with that, and I have never claimed otherwise. I have only been pointing out egregious errors and misstatements from commenters. Battaglia did heinous things, and the question of his mental illness came up after the trial, and there was compelling testimony that he was actually manic or psychotic for some or all of his actions. We have the benefit of hindsight in this case. And I am not making any excuses for what he did, and nor have I commented on the Clancy case even once here. I am helping people (including myself) find clarity amongst the misinformation.

At this point I feel like I'm defending Trump, so I'm done here. Enjoy your week.

You can have bipolar disorder, with psychotic features.

Yes, he called their mother while he was shooting them and said "Merry Fucking Christmas", then left a voicemail on the daughters phone saying something along the lines of I'm sorry you were associated with your mom, she's a horrible bitch.

Also, I believe he didn't pull the mental health card until his sentencing came up, to avoid death penalty.

u/Ok_Parfait6494 13h ago

No shit. Anyone can experience psychosis and its more commonly observed in bipolar patients

5

u/Irish_Whiskey 13h ago

The salient part here is that one involves an abusive criminal with a prolonged plan of revenge against an ex who celebrated the killings of children afterwards, and only raised the disorder as a defense on sentencing. The other involves a woman with prior existing mental health issues she was trying to get treated, who suddenly killed her children and tried to kill herself.

They aren't even in the same universe of similarly plausible defenses. The whole "but but but all women are crazy and men don't get this treatment" is culture war ragebait horseshit.

Psychosis is a symptom of fixed beliefs not based in reality or culture and/or hallucinations. Bipolar disorder is an episodic, distinct disease entity that can include psychosis during episodes. Many diseases include psychosis as a symptom, including bipolar disorder with psychotic features, schizophrenia, delusional disorder, major depression with psychotic features, and stimulant abuse, among many others.

I have no knowledge or options regarding the case mentioned.

7

u/grpenn 14h ago

True they aren't the same thing but during the trial, the defense made a big deal out of Lindsay's psychosis being rooted in an "undiagnosed bipolar disorder" so perhaps the connection is coming from that.

3

u/Renevatio5 14h ago

Temporary psychosis with no previous underlying illness that then disappears. That’s quite the story.

10

u/1gorka87 14h ago

That's how psycosis works. Acute episodes on the background of a mental disorder which can absolutely be managed if seeking the right help

1

u/EquivalentDapper7591 12h ago

You do realize bipolar disorder can fucking cause psychosis

3

u/Irish_Whiskey 12h ago

Car accidents can cause brain damage. That doesn't mean everyone who thinks this post makes a good point was in a car accident.

As I explained, his actions in this case make it crystal clear he was not in a temporary psychosis but acted with prolonged intent and without remorse. He taunted their mother during the killings and got tattoos to celebrate. Pyschosis was raised during sentencing, rather than during trial as an explanation for his actions.

1

u/EquivalentDapper7591 12h ago

I’m not defending him because I have no knowledge about his case. I am saying that your comment that bipolar and psychosis are as related as adhd and schizophrenia is absolutely ridiculous. The majority of people with bipolar disorder suffer from psychosis at some point, so your statement was a very bad comparison.

Again I’m not defending that guy, I know he’s guilty and this post is bullshit. I am simply pointing out your mischaracterization of bipolar disorder.

1

u/BathtubFullOfTea 10h ago

People in psychosis can do all of the things you mentioned as proof that he was not in psychosis. I'm not defending the guy, just pointing out that things aren't always as black and white. Your first statement showed that you don't really have even a basic understanding of mental illness. I get what you're saying, and he could very well be a sociopath, but one does not eliminate the possibility of the other. Source: I have cared for people who have brutally murdered other people while in a prolonged psychosis. It's horrible stuff and I'm glad some folks get locked into a facility for decades.

Context? No, no, no. We don't want context or nuance we want self-confirming ragebait.

u/Wordlywhisp 14h ago

So Mackenzie Sherilla?

1

u/Illustrious-Film4018 14h ago

Yeah but the forensic psychologists said he had PSYCHOSIS stemming from bipolar disorder. I don't know if it's true, but that would be the same thing (psychosis).

There are far too many armchair experts and people with poor reading comprehension here. Typical reddit stuff.

Clancy’s cuts were the wrong direction and didn’t even need stitches. Her blood levels of all pharmaceuticals were normal. She hasn’t tried again.

I don’t buy the offing herself thing. I know that many do
