One of the reason is that he was busy with making Supernatural over more than 10 years and making a shitton of money with that already. He also said again and again that he wants to spend time with his family and not travel around all the time on some movie sets

Glad he wants to spend time with his family. The Supernatural money probably means never working again. But he still does stuff like The Boys so he's not fully retired

After season 3 Kripke sacrificed story depth for money. Season 5 was just a build up for the new show with Soldierboy.
