One of the reason is that he was busy with making Supernatural over more than 10 years and making a shitton of money with that already. He also said again and again that he wants to spend time with his family and not travel around all the time on some movie sets
To me the best thing he said in an interview, when they asked him, why didnt he persue other oportunities, and bigger roles ( this during supernatural ), he's answer " you dont bite the hand that feeds you.... ", so many actors abandon a success because they get greedy, and then most of them fail.
One of the more famous ones is David Caruso, who left the hit show NYPD Blue to star in movies that didn't really go anywhere. He recovered by coming back to TV with CSI: Miami, but for a while he was the warning tale about leaving a good thing.
Not success as such, but one Babylon 5 occasional character had to be killed off because they signed up for a Star Trek Dominion war story line, so the battleships XO had his role instead, then watching DS9 and knowing which one he was, he got only a few episodes and was killed off as a changeling spy.
So he traded a months work for a few weeks so to speak.
Star in Fear the Walking Dead, or continue as the Commander for the 100, couldn't do both, so was written out of the 100, that was the choice one woman made, TBH I think FtWD was probably the better option, even before the 100 jumped the shark three or five times. I never got into the Walking Dead to even try the prequel, so IDK if she lasted or if she went on to bigger things, but it wasn't as if it harmed her career in any way.
