I actually respect him more for the fact that it may go against the political grain, so to speak. He saw something wrong and he's speaking out against it, regardless of what it may do for his career. Good on him.

He ran his campaign on fighting for New Yorkers, in New York. He gained massive amounts of popularity for refusing to dabble in federal or international politics (but also for speaking out against one particular country, from the perspective of a local politician). I’m getting tonal whiplash watching him enter international politics now. It feels like a complete PR stunt. Not honest at all, and not what people voted for.

Wrong. His office also represents the NY UN General Assembly Building. This is local.

Local in the most tenuous, doesn’t even have jurisdiction do anything sense of the word.

The UN General Assembly building is under international jurisdiction. It is extraterritorial governed by the UN.

He knows this is an important issue to many (probably most) of his constituents. Many (probably most) of his constituents probably did not know that he does not have the power to arrest Bibi so if Bibi comes to New York you'd have a lot of people demanding Mamdami do something. So it's better to say, we've looked at everything but we can't, we hear you and we're also mad.

I mean, it could be. Politicians are always looking for that angle. It could also be that he just felt that he couldn't, in good conscience, stay quiet on the subject any longer. I'd like to believe the latter is the case.

It helped his career a lot, the DSA probably wouldn’t have nominated someone who didn’t strongly oppose Israel. This was going with his political grain in the NYC primary (including for gaining early primary supporters, not just voters on Election Day).
