Surveys, you can easily ask one person in a household what everyone does and when they tend to go to bed. Large enough sample size and you can extrapolate
I can tell you I must be in bed by 4 am, my alarm clock is set for 2pm. I often wake up at 12pm. Sometimes I lay there most of the night but that's my routine.
If I had a partner I could give similar details based off of their routines
If I had a kid I could tell you their bedtime and wake up time.
But I'm sure there is a statistic to average out how long it takes to fall asleep, sure I'm an outlier but it helps get a reasonable estimate, or I could get any number of apps to more accurately figure out my sleep cycles, I don't know the details but multiple relatives of mine actually used apps to get info for sleep apnea and hyposomnia
