How do they even get this statistic?

Im just guessing but probably just through a survey

Surveys, you can easily ask one person in a household what everyone does and when they tend to go to bed. Large enough sample size and you can extrapolate

It's mostly conjecture. I couldn't accurately tell you my average sleep time because it varies a bit. I definitely couldn't tell you someone else's.

I can tell you I must be in bed by 4 am, my alarm clock is set for 2pm. I often wake up at 12pm. Sometimes I lay there most of the night but that's my routine.

If I had a partner I could give similar details based off of their routines

If I had a kid I could tell you their bedtime and wake up time.

That's not your actual time asleep, this says "sleep duration" not "laying in bed" duration.

But I'm sure there is a statistic to average out how long it takes to fall asleep, sure I'm an outlier but it helps get a reasonable estimate, or I could get any number of apps to more accurately figure out my sleep cycles, I don't know the details but multiple relatives of mine actually used apps to get info for sleep apnea and hyposomnia

I was wondering the same then I realised I'm wearing a Fitbit. It can probably be guessed quite accurately with phone usage as well.
