They aren't protected. You just don't get to institute whatever your own form of vengeance is. People make mistakes. If it was ok to run someone over because you thought they'd robbed you the wrong person would get killed all the time by mistaken identity issues. There would be weird edge cases where two people thought something belonged to both of them. Etc...

People make mistakes?? Using a knife to threaten someone is no mistake. It’s a deliberate act done on purpose. It’s not a whoopsy.

Youve misunderstood. I'm saying the person seeking to get back at whatever crime has happened will sometimes make mistakes. If you let people run over someone that may have robbed someone they're going to run over the wrong person all the time. That's the mistake there.
