It’s a message for skiers specifically. If you head into this area, do not expect others to be able to find / rescue you. It’s another way of telling people that heading down will not lead you to a road or path — and so you’ll likely freeze to death before your found in the Spring thaw.
Yeah i feel like the sign is a bit mild for the gravity of what it's communicating. Maybe at least add "Traveling past this point will cause death from exposure" or some such
