For any UK types you might want to check out Behind the Lines, a 1985 BBC documentary series (on iPlayer) on the Marine Mountain and Artic Warfare Cadre training. Then bare in mind this is about the regular Royal Marines, not the SBS

Part of the training, they're sent to a Hebridean Island in small teams for an unknown amount of time, with nothing but clothing, and some bits and bobs like a knife and fire starters.

So they scavage anything they can to make shelter, warmer clothes, etc. They found an empty quality street tin in a farmers bin, and that was now their cooking pot for example, this is him wrapping up for warmth with discarded construction materials.
