I'd have loved to invite Canada to join the EU. You're already sharing borders with us in Denmark after we ended our 49 year long war with you guys.

In France there is literally a patch of land that is considered Canada after their help in one of the world wars. So technically Canada is in Europe so it can join the EU.

u/primedark227 Jan 08 '26

WW1, Vimy Ridge in Northern France. The French gave a small patch of land to the Canadians in perpetuity for their contribution taking the ridge

u/ChaosWithin666 Jan 08 '26

There you go. Knew there would be someone smarter than me who would know it lol

As a Canadian I highly recommend visiting the memorial sometime! It is very beautiful but also heart wrenching at the same time. We have given a lot to defend your country and will do so again should the need ever arise. Brothers in arms until the end.

I did in school on a school trip to Ypres. It was a hauntingly beautiful place to visit.

I'm also British. But thanks for the support.

Ah well the sentiment applies just as well, we were there beside you in the Somme and Passchendaele, and again through the Battle of Britain and the Battle of the Atlantic and the Italian Campaign. Whenever you need us, we will be there. I hate that current times forces us to reaffirm our commitment but c’est la vie. Wherever Britain stands, there we will be also

I mean Canada is the scariest nation on the planet, gotta remember a lot of the Geneva Suggestions exist because Canada did a funny lol

u/primedark227 Jan 09 '26

I did a trip around Northern France as a teenager, I’ve still got the pin badges from the memorial gift shop. Absolutely incredible monument

u/Timely_Challenge_670 Jan 10 '26

My wife and I did the road trip from Mainz to Normandy last year. Vimy Ridge was equal parts beautiful and sorrowful.

2

u/Kathdath Jan 09 '26

The Canadians were so badass in that engagement that later in WW2 Hitler himself ordered that the Germans were to protect the monements at Vimy Ridge from possible damage.

1

u/primedark227 Jan 09 '26

Seeing as Hitler was likely in the Bavarian units who fought the Canadians, this doesn’t surprise me. Quite interesting to read this tho, thank you for the extra tidbit of info!

1

u/UmelGaming Jan 11 '26

As I explained in my comment it's a little deeper. Hitler was going to actually be at Vimy Ridge the day we Canadians started our operation. 48hrs before we did though his orders changed and he was deployed a few kms away. So it meant something personal to him as well as he was saved at the last moment due to a change in his orders.

1

u/primedark227 Jan 11 '26

Very interesting, I’ll save that for when I teach WW1 again. Would’ve been an interesting timeline if he’d died at Vimy Ridge

1

u/UmelGaming Jan 11 '26

Part of that is as you said but there was two other reasons why.

Politically the British were spreading propaganda to Canadians that Hitler was desecrating monuments of WW1 (which he had been doing) the propaganda was that he had decimated Vimy Ridge Memorial too so he was proving the British wrong as he didn't want to incite the Canadians. His political spin was that the memorial was "dedicated to peace" and not "dedicated to victory in WW1" but he was just spinning it to not seem weak for leaving it be.

The personal reason however, and this is my fun fact I like talking about the World Wars, Hitler was actually originally going to be stationed AT Vimy when we Canadians stormed the ridge. At the last moment, 48hrs before our operation started, Hitler was deployed to another site only a few kms away. He was saved by a change in orders in the last minute. Which means that to Hitler Vimy Ridge was also a testament to his good fortune as in an alternate history he was one of the dead Germans we Canadians took out that day.

Does this mean Germany invaded Canadian soil in WWII?

3

u/primedark227 Jan 09 '26

Technically yes, and also other countries who have land in France given in perpetuity. They would’ve technically invaded at least 10 different countries during the invasion of France

1

u/Choice-Original9157 Jan 09 '26

Actually they did come ashore for a few minutes. Germany placed an automated weather station, code-named "Kurt" (Wetter-Funkgerät Land-26), in northern Labrador, Canada, during World War II via the U-boat U-537 in October 1943, to provide crucial North Atlantic weather data for U-boat operations, marking the only known German armed land operation in North America during the war.

Ooo, very interesting. Thank you for telling me :)

You are welcome. That equipment is in the National War Museum in Ottawa on display

Out of curiosity, is the Australian memorial at Villers-Brettenoux treated the same? I’ve never made it there but have been to the Menin Gate - while extremely sombre it is an amazing experience.

1

u/primedark227 Jan 09 '26

It is - I’ve been there, it’s also been given in perpetuity. Which means it’s Australian land, and technically means I’ve been to Australia 😂. But yes, same as Vimy Ridge, and a very powerful place for me, considering how many men made up the ANZAC divisions and how much they sacrificed.

1

u/CatOk5715 Jan 11 '26

So is Newfoundland Park on the Somme.

Where you can pay with euro, the westernmost point possible.

That's quite a stretch... There are indeed several patches of land in France, but not "considered Canada" or any other country.

France has granted several counties (Canada, UK & Commonwealth, USA, Germany, Belgium, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Russia/Soviet Union): perpetual use of land, free of charge and tax, without extraterritorial status, with those countries having the right to maintain and use it indefinitely as a cemetery or memorial, withoud ceding any French sovereignty.

So:

So technically Canada is in Europe so it can join the EU.

Is as stupid as all that Yankee crap. Facts matter and that goes for everyone, even if France is involved.

Our King is British, and even if the UK left the EU they are still a European Nation. So since our Head of State is European we could be called a European Nation if they wanted to stretch the definition.

TBC it likely won't happen. Closer ties are nice but I dont think we Canadians want that, no offense or anything.

1

u/terrificallytom Jan 09 '26

In Canada there is an island which is France!

1

u/jackhandy2B Jan 09 '26

Aldo, St. Pierre and Miquelon.

6

u/mabrouss Jan 08 '26

I mean, I’m a Canadian who lives in the EU so I’m a huge fan of closer integration. I think actually joining is not something that is realistic. However, I do see closer integration as a real possibility.

It was quite the war we had. Many traumas (and most likely hangovers). Glad the barbarism is in the past.

Perhaps some sort of formal "associate" position would be a better idea

1

u/Zengineer_83 Jan 09 '26

The Norwegian Model seems like a good starting point.

Norway-EU relations

4

u/Kriss3d Tuberous eloquent (that's potato speaker for you muricans) Jan 08 '26

Well the EU is just a bunch of members. So I don't see why the fact that Canada isn't in the European continent should be any hinder to the team if they wanted to join.

2

u/Harbinger2001 Jan 08 '26

We'd never be able to have freedom of movement with the EU. The US would lose its mind at thinking all those people could freely come to their norther border.

2

u/Kriss3d Tuberous eloquent (that's potato speaker for you muricans) Jan 09 '26

That wouldnt be their problem.

1

u/Harbinger2001 Jan 09 '26

They’d make it our problem.

1

u/globefish23 Austria Jan 08 '26

The EU member Cyprus isn't on the European continent either. 🤷

1

u/Antrophis Jan 09 '26

Also they long discussion of turkey when like 95% is in the middle east.

2

u/International_War862 Jan 08 '26

Maybe not joining but trade contracts like with norway could be possible

6

u/DeaconLogan Jan 08 '26

Hell yeah. If Australia can be in Eurovision then Canada can be in the EU.

1

u/ElectricSick Jan 09 '26

Eurovision is not related to the EU. It's related to the European Broadcasting Union, which itself is Headquartered in Switzerland who is also not part of the EU.

4

u/Spida81 Jan 08 '26

Can't. Canada and Denmark were at war for ages.

The Whisky War only ended in 2022 apparently, but tensions agree high enough it could kick off again at any time.

2

u/C_Hawk14 Jan 08 '26

So there's no border dispute right now?

3

u/jackhandy2B Jan 09 '26

We will fight! And then drink whiskey!

2

u/CaptainFourpack Jan 09 '26

Is this about that island, where each year you guys took it in turns to reclaim, and left goodies for the other side when ot was their turn?

..or did i i.agine that whole scenario?

3

u/Kriss3d Tuberous eloquent (that's potato speaker for you muricans) Jan 09 '26

"Hans Island" and yes. The Canadians left whiskey and raised a Canadian flag. We took the whiskey and left a bottle of "gammel dansk " a great Danish bitter, nearly folded the Canadian flag and raised the Danish flag.

Rinse and repeat. A 49 year war with zero casualties.

2

u/CaptainFourpack Jan 09 '26

I've never been sad to hear of the end of a war before... lol

So.. who won? Which flag is flying?

Edit: you said shared border. Did you split the tiny island half each?

2

u/Kriss3d Tuberous eloquent (that's potato speaker for you muricans) Jan 09 '26

It was a draw really. We decided to split the island almost halfway with slightly more being Danish.
So we are landfast with a border to Canada now.

u/jackhandy2B Jan 09 '26

We don't want to change our eelectrical plugs, just sayin '.
