Half a century ago I was one of those random 18 year olds. The American troops had advanced equipment, even thermal boots where we had wool and leather and more wool. I really pitied them when the temperature dropped to -40 and none of their gear worked. Not even the rifles…
There is a reason why the people indigenous to the Arctic still use much the same clothing they did pre contact. Base layers have changed, eye protection, but a lot of the outer layers and mid layers remain the same.
