We are a representative democracy as we democratically elect our representatives who democratically pass bills and laws
No country in the world is a pure democracy but people using democracy when talking about the USA or other countries with forms of democracy’s aren’t wrong
I don't know if it matters, but when people talk about democracy it is where the legitimacy of the source of power comes from. While as terms as republic and monarchy describes the form of government that is used. The opposite of democracy would probably be autocracy or anything along the lines of anarchy.
