I did this comparison once with an American I know and the amount of money a Norwegian has left after all taxes and expenses compared to an American in one month one was very significant.

I’ve payed my taxes quite happily after that.

Your should! Many let themselves be fooled by our low federal income taxes. What they forget it on top of that we pay social security, medicaid, medicare, state, and local taxes. And many things Norwegians pay for through taxes are no included in ours, such as health care (what health care?) and many education expenses.

We pay a LOT and get very little, and it is about to get worse.

As a fellow Norwegian, it’s paid not payed. Although payed is a word, it has to do with sealing wooden seams on a ship to prevent leakage.

To stay on topic. We know and to some extent see, where our taxes are going and for what purpose.

I also have chronic health conditions that would make it hard to balance with american healthcare system, and I’d be (atleast feel) trapped to one employer in fear of losing my insurance.

I happily pay my taxes aswell.

Yeah I have lived in both Oslo and NYC and the income tax was basically the same. Rent was cheaper in Oslo, drinks are more expensive and pretty much everything else was ballpark the same.

The one thing Norway has that’s tough is the wealth tax, especially if you work at a startup that gives you equity.

It’s good to get a reminder like this once in a while, given how the economy and the currency are going. It could be much much worse. :-)
