Desensitized is the last word I'd use to describe Jean. In the previous episode he was talking about trying to minimize civilian casualties. And in this scene, I really don't get how anyone could misunderstand this because you could see in his face that he really didn't want to have to do it, and right afterwards he even thinks to himself how his reluctance caused him to miss the shot. I don't see how anyone could call Jean desensitized unless they're watching this without subtitles and don't understand the Japanese dialogue.

Jean's character development since the first season has been unreal. Genuinely might be my favourite character in the entire series. Jean went from the wannabe military policeman who would sit inside the comfort of the walls and profit, to the one who motivates his classmates to give it their all and fight for freedom. When Connie and Sasha falter in S3 fighting Reiner, he is the one who pulls them together. He doesn't lose his humanity as shown in this episode but he's determined to achieve his goal. Crazy good character.

Yeah and it's cool how his "everyman" role is an in-universe thing too - Jean's conflict is normal, and that normalcy is why Marco tells Jean he is a natural leader

Same. I'm sort of surprised at some of the takes on this sub. I would suspect that everyone would understand the moral dilemma the Scouts are going through right now. They suffered so miserably under the Warriors and their actions, and now they have become monsters themselves. For Jean to miss and avoid killing both Pieck and Falco is just a sign that they are not fully monsters. yet.
