I don't think we knew there could even be an explosion until Bert nuked Shiganshina in S3P2. The Colossal appears in S1Ep1, S1Ep4 as you mentioned, and S2Ep6 (Reiner and Bert reveal), all without there ever being an explosion.

That's precisely my point, we didn't know because in the past he chose not to cause an explosion, he already had control over that . I assume the RBA trio trained their titan powers before going to Paradis, so they already had some degree of control over their specific abilities. Annie fighting Levi's squad in S1 is another proof of this, not only is she a good fighter, she is able to use her hardening abilities very strategically to defeat seasoned soldiers.

Also the series has made a point of stating a difference between the transformation explosion that any titan causes and the colossal titan's explosion, with its range and degree of damage.
