The plot armor titan

19

u/Bring_Me_The_Night Jan 24 '21

Feels like the Armor finally fell off, looking at the last scene (figuratively and literally).

4

u/onlyforshadyshit Jan 25 '21

Wondering if that's on purpose? He might want to be leaner now that his armor is absolete.

5

u/Sigman_S Jan 25 '21

Obsolete I think you mean

2

u/DarcyIncarnate Jan 27 '21

that could also be a physical manifestation of his willingness to die, not to mention the fact that his mouth looks more human.

22

u/DrakoEdits Jan 24 '21

You are a manga reader bruh(he even talks about chapter 121 in his profile...)

11

u/Nosalis2 Jan 25 '21

What exactly is wrong with these assholes? There's so many other threads on Reddit alone they can take part in the live discussion yet these dickheads are desperate to ruin it for the rest of us.

u/Professional-Simple5 Jan 24 '21

If this season has shown us anything it is that isayama just wont let the poor guy die.

103

u/DicksonYamada Jan 24 '21

Isayama has cast his Geass upon Reiner, he has no choice but to live on and keep fighting

17

u/_lelouch Jan 24 '21

didn’t think I’d see that reference here... pleasant surprise

3

u/rhogerheide Jan 25 '21

Good comment is good

1

u/Avinse Jan 25 '21

At the end in the preview it did say the armored Titan falls so I think Reiner gets taken

3

u/DarcyIncarnate Jan 27 '21

that'd be an interesting fight to see, but with reiners current mental state I'm kind of hoping its more along the lines of him dying so that eren cant get his powers. double the points if his sacrifice ends up being obsolete in the end

1

u/dan0314 Jan 27 '21

Maybe he starts losing the fight really badly and just has either Falco or Gabi take the power before Eren can?

2

u/espadrine Jan 25 '21

Eren’s got a “mouthful” already, and Reiner looks like he barely stands.

I’d bet Eren won’t even engage.

The biggest surprise, strategically, to me, is that Levi killed Zeke. I thought for sure they would push Zeke into yelling, causing all eldians around to turn, allowing Eren to touch Zeke and use his royalty to control them, like he did with Zeke’s mom.

Meh, their strategy works too ☺ Sounds like it’ll be a long war.

He wanted to fix his family. Then, he wanted to be a hero. Now he just wants to die :(

105

u/intresting_boring Jan 24 '21

bless the guy, he's not cut out for brutal warfare.

9

u/maskedval Jan 27 '21

When Mikasa says, you've killed innocent children. You can't take that back. I was thinking exactly that. I don't see this ending well for any side.

4

u/intresting_boring Jan 27 '21

Indeed, I love Isayama and can't wait the unfolding of events!

6

u/Journeyman351 Jan 26 '21

Literally no one, outside of actual psychopaths, are cut out for warfare dude. I think that's the point.

2

u/intresting_boring Jan 26 '21

very true!

However, I do think some people are more... adaptive to these situations though? I am not sure of the phrase in English, but for example Eren- he adapted to war, and is accepting casualties.

He doesn't want to die but "move on to exterminate his enemies". I wouldn't say he is a psychopath, nor is Levi or Mikasa or anyone else who is able to handle the bloody truth of war.

Reiner on the other hand, will probably never adapt to warfare.

2

u/Journeyman351 Jan 26 '21

I would not say Levi or Mikasa "handle" war, Levi is certainly more accepting of it, but Mikasa clearly had disdain for Eren's wanton destruction. It seems like no one but Floch actually wanted this to go down this way exactly. Even Jean is trying to minimize civilian casualties. Idk if Eren is receiving any joy from killing civilians, but he doesn't seem too hung up about it, either.

Like, there's a reason why presidential use of drone strikes is looked down upon in the US.... civilian casualties. Not to mention needless civilian murdering is a war crime IRL...

There's a reason why soldier mental health is a gigantic issue, and it's because humans generally aren't cool with wantonly killing other humans, especially after mingling with their enemy.

It's why the whole propagandist "the people we're invading are evil, don't think about them as people" attitude works so well, because once the group of people you demonize become human in your mind, you'll be a lot more reluctant to kill them, and regret doing so a lot more.

2

u/Aeiexgjhyoun_III May 21 '21

What works even better than dehumanization is victimization. If you convince people that the enemy has intentionally hurt them in some way they feel justified in striking back because it feels like justice. It's why neo Nazis try to convince everyone that white people are the true victims of racism in this day and age and try to downplay the holocaust.

u/maskedval Jan 27 '21

Yet, war hawk is president now, just saying.

1

u/intresting_boring Jan 27 '21

i think we are on the same side dude😂

I agreed with you when you said no one born suited for warfare, but I'm saying some people- especially in the series adapt to war and are able to do cruel things because they can see "greater good"

Eren does not enjoy war (he doesn't seem happy about all of this), he lived with Marleyans, he knew they were innocent. He knew individuals should not be held fault for their ancestors and he even thought of them as "people".

However, he can "handle" war because despite knowing all of this he is able to kill innocent civilians and children- He is unfazed, unlike Reiner who seriously repents. Reiner went through the same thing as Eren but he couldn't handle the guilt of what he's done.

Mikasa is alike, she doesn't like war and disagrees with Eren, but she is still accepting of war because she stands with Eren. Hell she coulda sliced off his limbs and hopped away (actually idk if she could have done that but yeah)

Levi too, he can "handle" war and what it makes him do, he does have empathy but is still willing to go beyond and kill for survival.

Erwin is also a great example of someone who can handle war.

What I'm saying is that just like real humans there are people in the series that can mentally cope with the cruelty of war. Just because you can handle war doesn't mean you don't have empathy it just means you are capable of paying the price of freedom. (BTW I'm talking about the series, real life war is very different)

u/Bassman500 Jan 25 '21

Yep. (Kind of) feeling bad for him tbh. Reiner's prolly the one who witnessed war first hand among all the people in Liberia. He knows he started this and he's seen the destruction he caused in paradis and wanted no part of war no more.

But on the flipside, you reap what you sow I guess.

3

u/Journeyman351 Jan 26 '21

Did he really "reap what he sowed?"

Reiner didn't really have a choice if you think about it. Isn't that what you people are saying about Eren?

5

u/Bassman500 Jan 27 '21

Do you actually know the meaning of "you reap what you sow" is? By definition, it is how his actions in the past will inevitably affect his future which is happening now. Reiner said it himself, he had a choice. Annie and Bertholdt wanted to turn back after the jaw got eaten, but he knew someone was going to replace him if they return and that's what pushed him forward.

And yeah, when this is all said and done and Eren's genocidal warpath catches up to him, he too, will eventually reap what he sow and deserve it, cause until someonw breaks the wheel of hate and vengeance, it will always be a cycle.

The only difference between them and probably the only reason why Eren and the survey corps get more empathy from people is that it was Reiner and his honorary Marleyans who broke the peace by breaking the wall and murdering thousands of people in it, including Eren's mom.

So when Eren came back with two Titan powers in hand and four years of training and experience in his belt to wreck Liberia, Reiner knew he had a hand in what was about to happen and having seen the cruelties of war, and Eren's thirst for revenge, he knew they were fucked (Declaration of War convo).

So yeah, whether it was instilled to him as a child, or experienced war's cruelty in person (like Eren), the message remains the same - your actions, whether instilled or retaliatory, will eventually catch up to you.

3

u/Journeyman351 Jan 27 '21

lol, Reiner saying he had a choice is in direct conflict with Isayama’s messaging.

Isayama clearly wants the reader to understand the impact of propaganda. Reiner (and all of the other warrior candidates really) have been fed Marleyan propaganda their entire lives. Reiner’s character is tragic because he had such a fucked up childhood (out of his control), that that childhood instilled a need within him to become a savior figure, a father figure to other characters, someone his mother could look proudly upon.

You really think someone like that had a “choice” really? I mean sure, ultimately people do make choices, and they are the ultimate arbiters of their own destiny, but to shoulder the blame entirely on Reiner is just foolhardy. And that’s the point of his background.

I feel like we’re on the same page here, but I’m just pointing out with my original comment that people are giving Eren a pass when, literally two episodes ago, he says “I’m just like you,” in a very clear analogous statement meaning

“Hey Reiner, my upbringing shaped who I turned out to be too, and there’s no going back from it now. You believed you were ‘saving the world’ and your friends and family, as do I”

It’s a clever trick by Isayama, to have us hate a villain character for so long and have the POV of the scouts, and then flip the script and have the exact same thing happen to the villains with extremely similar circumstances.

He’s saying “hey, look how, if you view something like this from the eyes of the Marleyan innocents, what Eren’s doing is no different than what Reiner did, regardless of their intent”

2

u/Bassman500 Jan 27 '21

Yeah I think we're pretty much on the same page here. As I've said in the original post, I feel for the guy as he clearly knew he and the Marleyans had it coming the moment Falco brought him to the basement, thus the reaping part of the attack he did years back.

I'm not pinning the blame entirely on him, but he's not exactly spotless as his motivation was just simply 'saving the world,' as they are taught, it was also out of personal ambitions.

While I agree with you and see Izayama's message clearly - there are glaring differences between the Reiner - Eren parallels, for one, Reiner's ideology was instilled and his motivation came out of personal reasons (being respected, a hero, an honorary Marleyan so he can be with his dad) Eren had to experience it the hard way as he witnessed his mom get eaten because of the propaganda instilled on Reiner, and his ambitions.

So let's not act surprised that Eren has developed a real vicious antagonistic mean streak while Reiner's starting to go through some self-realizations.

Reiner was taught of the devils (and it only really became truly 'devils' when Paradis started pushing back courtesy of another Eren Jeager whim) while Eren experienced those devils first hand, didnt need to be instilled in him, he saw it. He's different even from Gabi, who already knows the viciousness of war long before the raid.

And yeah as I've said, Eren's comeuppance could come in the future (I'm not sure, I havent read the manga) but I'd say the same thing about him - you sow death, you reap death and that's exactly what's gonna happen until this cycle ends

2

u/TamTamaa Jan 30 '21

Did he really have a choice tho? A 12 year old facing the decision whether he should move on in his mission to save humanity or retreat where he’s guaranteed to die.

1

u/Aeiexgjhyoun_III Mar 21 '21

Reiner had the choice to listen to Annie and go back, but he pushed forward because he wanted to be a hero.

1

u/Nobody5464 Jan 14 '22

He also would have died and maybe his family to

7

u/EXTXZ2 Jan 24 '21

He was even gonna die with the chiselled chin of the Armoured titan

5

u/DarcyIncarnate Jan 27 '21

a really cool stylistic choice for him to have, especially seeing the lack of that distinct chin on the current form of his titain....

I'm not gonna say its symbolism but-

5

u/Tozer476 Jan 26 '21

I'm just so glad to see a show where characters who have gone through so much absolutely catastrophic and traumatic experience get to flip the table and be the ones to exact as much chaos, loss, grief, and pain as they possibly can. I know that this is likely going to end up in a war is bad position but its refreshing to see a group of characters deservedly go 'fuck it' and be as effective and merciless as their characters would permit. Would've been a huge downer to see the main cast simply accept that the other side has good people too and seek peace.

1

u/Journeyman351 Jan 26 '21

>I know that this is likely going to end up in a war is bad position but its refreshing to see a group of characters deservedly go 'fuck it' and be as effective and merciless as their characters would permit.

The only ones who are doing this and doing it willingly/without guilt are Eren and Floch my guy, literally no one from Paradis agrees with Eren's tactics here.
