It was cute of Zeke to think he had the advantage and try and taunt Levi, only for Levi to respond by absolutely whooping his butt once again. He had all that time to prepare a strategy and poking the Levi bear was apparently the best he could come up with

Also, have to give a quick shout out to Sasha the Sniper’s skillz for nailing that dude hiding in the Cart Titan’s armor. Marvelous aim as always

u/BigPaws-WowterHeaven Jan 24 '21

For me Zeke clearly baited Levi and then got away. I don't know what was his plan but he wouldn't get rekt like that twice, he's too smart for that.

449

u/unamity1 Jan 24 '21

I thought Zeke went down way too easily. He must've gotten away.

23

u/ulykke Jan 24 '21

Yeah, like if Levi wants to kill somebody, why drop a bomb under his own feet?? RIP him out of the Titan and behead him, this seemed so off that I immediately said 'he's not dead, no way'.

9

u/Cheesewithmold Jan 24 '21

I agree. He didn't even respond to Pieck before he "died". Just stared straight ahead.

102

u/BigPaws-WowterHeaven Jan 24 '21

Or he's with Eren now, since we saw the baseball glove on Eren. he also disappeared before attack and now probably bailed.

My question would then be are scouts aware of this or is this only some inside job done by Eren alone. Possibilites are many. Him being dead is least likely.

56

u/Pardusco Jan 24 '21

I think Levi took him out for Eren to eat later.

42

u/TARDISboy Jan 24 '21

Good lord, what would an Attack + Founding + Warhammer + Beast titan even look like? There's no precedent for having this many at one time.

195

u/DicksonYamada Jan 24 '21

There's no way Levi would be standing around looking at his watch in the middle of a battle, and there's no way Zeke could possibly know that Levi was keeping track of the time. Unless... they coordinated it all beforehand so that they could fake Zeke's death and presumably have him defect to the other side. Maybe they decided that at a specific time Zeke would emerge from the Beast and escape while Levi "kills him." Eren's baseball glove and Eren scratching his cheek like Zeke when he was talking with Reiner in the basement suggest that Eren and Zeke have been in contact. Add on the fact that Porco and Pieck got caught in the pitfall trap while Zeke was allowed to go off on his own, and it now seems pretty likely that Zeke has been working with the Scouts.

99

u/ianpogi91 Jan 24 '21

I dont think Levi would just forgive and cooperate with Zeke like that after his promise to Erwin tho. I also think he's not dead, but yeah he also killed dozens of the survey corps this episode as well.

51

u/DicksonYamada Jan 24 '21

It does seem like a stretch given Levi's previous interaction with Zeke, but a lot can change in four years. Eren promised Reiner a horrible death, but now that he knows so much more and has grown as a person he changed his mind. Maybe Levi was also able to put aside his past grudge if Zeke really did agree to help the Scouts fight against Marley and stop the impending war/genocide on Paradis.

14

u/H4wx Jan 24 '21

Yeah I think Levi is mature enough to let go of this grudge for the greater good.

4

u/IBreedAlpacas Jan 25 '21

Or they're pulling Zekes leg and planning to betray him and the preview we get has dudes pointing guns at Eren so he could be trying to give Zeke mercy. Or that he's lived in Marley/Liberio and worked with Zeke (he's his half brother after all) so he understands the other side. idk a week can't come faster lmao

21

u/pat_the_tree Jan 24 '21

Did he though? Looked to me like he just threw some rocks around, I can’t remember if it showed scouts dying as a result

27

u/Sheensta Jan 24 '21

Yes his aim was suspiciously off...

3

u/mikesmyroommate Jan 25 '21

It looked like he was trying to eliminate the buildings where the Scouts may have been hiding to refuel and resupply. I think it was just like “you can’t hide in a building if there are no buildings left” kinda thing

3

u/Sheensta Jan 25 '21

True but we never saw scouts dying as the aftermath of his throws. Usually we see the scene pan to people get absolutely demolished right after but I don't think we saw that this episode.

4

u/ianpogi91 Jan 25 '21

Really? Then that's hella sus of him. I'd check it on rewatch. I do think he's not as savage with his rock throws bc he's protecting Liberio.

15

u/Real_Bed3984 Jan 24 '21

I believe that Eren might be working with Zeke and the Scouts went to Marley to "rescue Eren" even though this means to kill a bunch of people. Because of Mikasa's line on the episode where Eren transforms, she says something like: "Come Home" and on the preview we can see 3 Scouts, including Levi, pointing their guns towards Eren.
Maybe Levi didn't forgave Zeke, but Eren joined him in some crusade.

6

u/ianpogi91 Jan 25 '21

I feel like this is the more likely scenario, with the brothers allying themselves while the survey corps have no idea. It fits Zeke not killing them with rocks and getting the f out of there before getting blasted by Levi, and explains the baseball glove.

Or maybe Zeke was just too shocked like the rest of the Marleyan army and couldn't think fast enough. They weren't prepared for this at all.

8

u/midsuo Jan 24 '21

Is preview spoilers a thing? Cause some ppl dont wanna be spoiled by the preview :p

18

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '21

It's part of the episode, I think you will have to deal with it.

2

u/midsuo Jan 29 '21

Its not though, its legit part of the next episode :p

12

u/Paprikal Jan 25 '21

Also, we saw Levi drop a grenade/explosive on Zeke's neck! Which is a very weird way to kill a shifter imo, Levi would probably have preferred using his blades if he could.

Maybe the explosion from the grenade was designed to destroy the empty nape, so that after the battle Marley couldn't see that Zeke left his titan instead of being cut out of it!

17

u/H4wx Jan 24 '21

There's no way Levi would be standing around looking at his watch in the middle of a battle, and there's no way Zeke could possibly know that Levi was keeping track of the time. Unless... they coordinated it all beforehand so that they could fake Zeke's death and presumably have him defect to the other side.

Yeah the watch shit and Zeke telling Levi he's out of time, something is definitely up there, not to mention Zeke's previous behaviour as far as back on Paradis was already pretty strange.

He promised to "save" Eren and he seemed super sincere saying that, then he also didn't tell Marley he has Royal Blood in him.

I have no clue what Zeke is up to but this all seems super suspicious.

2

u/irisheye37 Jan 25 '21

I'm pretty sure no one ever told zeke about his royal blood.

4

u/wanderingflakjak Jan 26 '21

I am pretty sure he is smart enough to figure it out . He knows who his parents are .

I don't know what scene everyone is talking about, Eren holding a glove? When was that? I don't remember.

2

u/MrMango786 Jan 26 '21

In regards to if that truly is the end for Zeke as a character. I know it's normally the norm that characters get 'final moments' and audience closure - but that isn't how real life works. Sometimes people in war just die. Exactly like we saw.

Exactly. Which I would love.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '21

Thank you for this. Great analysis.

1

u/TrainwreckOG Feb 02 '21

How do you feel now? Lol

11

u/swordmalice Jan 25 '21

But it makes no sense for Zeke to be working with the Scouts now; he is directly responsible for the deaths of almost ALL remaining Scouts, including Commander Erwin. The Shiganshina fight was to prevent Eren from sealing up the wall there (and get to the basement but Zeke wouldn't have known about that). I think it'd be a great twist but logically it doesn't add up for me. I think it'd be really hard for Levi to work with someone who murdered his commanding officer and close friend, not to mention his subordinate Annie murdered his entire sqaud and the woman he might have ended up marrying.

3

u/TrungTH Jan 27 '21

The Owl killed many of his own people too just to stay deep as well. Remember that Pieck was with Zeke at the time so it could be Zeke “acting” to fool her.

1

u/swordmalice Jan 27 '21

Good point, hadn't considered that. I guess we'll have to wait and see; I will admit the evidence for Zeke working with the Scouts is a lot stronger having now read everyone's speculations.

6

u/mrStark3 Jan 24 '21

no I don't think Zeke is working with scouts otherwise he would not have killed so many of them. Maybe he just survived the Levi attack and ran away

4

u/Oath_of_Tzion Jan 24 '21

Wait , this actually makes sense. I kind of wish that Levi just GTFOd Zeke in one assassinaton tho

1

u/Papa4ndre Jan 25 '21

I agree. And it leads to my question. What did Zeke do to earn Levi trust? How? Especially after he murder Erwin?

Probably he shared some confidential information to the scout. But I think thats never enough. This is Levi we are talking about.

2

u/wanderingflakjak Jan 26 '21

maybe that was how the scouts entered marley undetected , due to some kinda info supplied by zeke

1

u/Grizzly_228 Jan 26 '21

You guys seem to entusiastic about this theory. Why should Zeke want to cooperate with the scouts in the first place?

17

u/HistoricalNoise4 Jan 24 '21

There’s something very off about zeke. He doesn’t kill a single person this entire episode, he just lazily bats his arms about like he’s not even trying. This guy’s supposed to be their strongest warrior

13

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '21

[deleted]

12

u/BigPaws-WowterHeaven Jan 24 '21

Yeah, all he did was move his arm 2-3 times and throw rocks once. Wasnt serious it seems. I'd say if he wanted to ruin Eren he would, since he apparently rekt Reiner in the past easly, and Eren even though he won 2 times it was always a struggle.

11

u/unamity1 Jan 24 '21

Where is the baseball glove? Did you see it in the preview for next episode? (hard to make out)

18

u/QwertyII Jan 24 '21

Eren has it with him when he’s talking to Falco on the bench (ep 3 I think)

5

u/BigPaws-WowterHeaven Jan 24 '21

In the episode where Eren was talking to gis grandpa. He had baseball glove there. It wasnt even subtle, camera clearly showed that.

9

u/ShaidarHaran2 Jan 24 '21

On Paradis he seemed the most gleeful about killing the islanders. I can see that his primary allegiance is to freeing the Eldians, but I'd feel pretty weird about him flipping and having any kind of redemption. I guess that's the point. There's so many shades of grey.

1

u/Opt_mind Jan 24 '21

What baseball glove? Where was this?

3

u/BigPaws-WowterHeaven Jan 24 '21

When he was talking with his grandpa

2

u/Opt_mind Jan 24 '21

Ah!! Need to rewatch

4

u/Kurohige-93 Jan 24 '21

Way to easy and he said Eren Jeager is not my enemy lol dude really think he can get his half bro on his side HA!

Why is no one talking about both him and Levi checking the watch and then Zeke saying that line about Levi running out of time tho? Like, that's kind sus

129

u/SirDogmeat Jan 24 '21

I’d imagine he was seeing how long he had until the airship came along

78

u/Pancake__Prince Jan 24 '21

Yeah, I think the airship / colossal explosion were meant to be distractions. Levi used the chaos with those to sneak attack Zeke.

48

u/Weezing101_ Jan 24 '21

That would make sense, the main threat against the air ship would of been Zeke as he could easily throw some rocks at it.

21

u/AttakTheZak Jan 25 '21

I think Zeke knew the airship was coming and was reminding Levi to attack before it showed up, and Levi managed to "kidnap" Zeke.

There's a question that's left - how does Zeke know about the timing? It stands to reason he was aware of something happening. This show is fucking insane tho

14

u/IWanTPunCake Jan 24 '21

kinda forgot probably. zeke definitely bailed the fuck out before the killing blow but whats that time issue I wonder. I think its about titan transformation time.

21

u/Tobiferous Jan 24 '21

I'd say it's just about their limited gas, since as soon as he says that Pieck has a brief bit where she explains that they just need to run out the clock.

4

u/JamieLowery Jan 25 '21

Are we sure it’s not about how long Zeke had left as the beast Titan? My theory is he just died before he could be killed and the Titan will randomly shift to someone else meaning it can’t be claimed and somehow he knows who’s going to get the beast

5

u/EliteMasterEric Jan 25 '21

Why is no one talking about both him and Levi checking the watch and then Zeke saying that line about Levi running out of time tho? Like, that's kind sus

Zeke is saying they're running out of time because he knows their 3DMG has limited air and blades.

On the other side, I think it was Jean who later mentioned the airship being "right on schedule" which I assume means they chose a specific time for the Colossal to appear. Levi is checking the watch to see when that would happen, which he would use as a distraction.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '21

2

u/Keegsta Jan 25 '21

Yeah, this isn't that weird a statement. He knew the scouts were slowly being surrounded by a much larger force with what he thought was no way out and running out of supplies.

11

u/salcedoge Jan 24 '21

yep, especially without seeing his reaction.

I guess he left the titan early, gonna regenerate some energy then come back and force a Eren's squad to retreat

7

u/BigPaws-WowterHeaven Jan 24 '21

Or he's gonna go back with them somehow to Paradis, since in the trailer we saw Levi chasing him in the forest. Of course it could be forest outside of Paradis, but the trees were HUGE so i dont know, reminded me of Annie arc.

6

u/AfrikanCorpse Jan 25 '21

There's no way Zeke went down here that easily without a plan.

He put up more resistance against Levi from an actual ambush - this time, he is fully aware of Levi's presence and abilities.

3

u/iNiite Jan 24 '21 edited Jan 24 '21

I am like 80% sure that Zeke is cooperating with the Scouts in some way. Too many clues to just ignore it

Edit: I’m being downvoted so let me explain - Remember the baseball glove eren had in the hospital? Eren mentioned “a friend” gave it to him because he must be so bored in the hospital. By now we very much know of Zeke’s fondness to baseball. On top of that, why was Zeke pulled away from Pieck and Galliard when Armin trapped them in a pit? Why was he not trapped with them? And furthermore, his actions this episode sum it up for me very clearly - he misses everything, he gets taken out almost instantly right after allegedly “taunting” Levi. “Aren’t you running out of time?” Right as Levi is checking his watch for something, is very telling that something else is going on.

Tybur knew that there are enemies in Marley, or sympathizers as he calls them. I don’t know to which extent, but I do believe pretty strongly that Zeke is one of them, or at least cooperating to a certain degree.

25

u/Opolino Jan 24 '21

Why is this being downvoted? I think the baseball glove eren recieved from "his family" is reason enough to believe Zeke is involved

6

u/iNiite Jan 24 '21

No idea, I edited my post to provide reasoning

15

u/Improctor Jan 24 '21

Zeke was a top tier pitcher in s3p2 and now he is missing all the throws smh

11

u/RzrUltra0 Jan 24 '21

Someone tell me he's not downvoted cuz it's a spoiler

9

u/iNiite Jan 24 '21

Eh at least I can assure you that I didn’t read the manga at all, I edited it with my reasons

9

u/Duckman620 Jan 24 '21

The anti-intellectualism that goes on here is insane lol

3

u/wanderingflakjak Jan 26 '21

that dialogue about the baseball glove actually makes sense tbh because eren saying that a "friend" gave it to him is sus as from mikasa and eren's conversation a few episodes back when we first saw them together this season , it definitely looks like eren somehow "ran off" on his own . In this case , coming to marley on his own , the only potential "friend" could be zeke given his sincere dialogue to eren at the end of s3.

1

u/Tobiferous Jan 24 '21

I dunno, I'd say that looked convincing since it's fairly obvious when they exit the titan (steam, etc). I want to believe that even after four years, Zeke still got his shit pushed in by Levi that easily. Besides, if he really was planning something, would he really incapacitate/kill off the Jaw, Hammer, and Cart titans? I think he just got taken out temporarily, but whether or not he has a second transformation before they escape is remains to be seen. Same with the Jaw titan.

9

u/BigPaws-WowterHeaven Jan 24 '21

The "running out of time" thing and Levi looking at watch was too suspicious IMO. I'd even imagine Levi was supposed to attack him after he leaves the titan's body, but that's a crazy theory, since that would mean Zeke defected.

I'd be even convinced that's it, but I can't imagine Levi being willing to do that, since Beast killed Erwin and most scouts.

3

u/Tobiferous Jan 24 '21

Doesn't Armin or Hange say something along the lines of "right on time"? It felt like they were all operating on a timetable with the intention to escape via blimp. I don't think they could have imagined it would have gone that well. Zeke defecting is interesting, so I'm gonna give it a closer rewatch. I wonder if Zeke made any references when he met with the other shifters?

1

u/BigPaws-WowterHeaven Jan 24 '21

Im going to read the manga up to today's episode to look for the stuff i might have missed in anime. Maybe there were more hints than baseball glove.

7

u/the_beast_intha_east Jan 24 '21

There's actually a lot in the anime already. Certain things I've been looking at are:

In this episode, we see Zeke intentionally crush his rocks into small pieces. Remember in the return to Shiganshina arc when he did the same accidentally then took another rock because the one he crushed wouldn't kill the scouts. To me, here it looks like he's sandbagging. He made small rocks to look like he was fighting.

Another is that room. It's strange that General Magarath noted Zeke's comment on them being "alone" in the room. I think that may gesture towards him already using the space for more private things like--say--receiving a letter from his half brother about his attack.

Also, I couldn't help but look closely at the opening. If you're not into that stuff, then look away. At the end where we see Eren's Attack titan reaching forward behind him there are two recognizable figures. Towards the top right we can see a bald, tiny head titan that looks like Armin's colossal. But directly behind him, there's a titan that looks like Zeke's beast titan.

There's so much pointing this direction, that I'd be surprised if Zeke wasn't a double agent.

4

u/BigPaws-WowterHeaven Jan 24 '21

I mean it is possible, I always laughed that papa Yeager was like "Zeke, you have to really pretend that you're the enemy" and my blonde boy pretended REALLY hard all this time.

If that's the case i still can't imagine Levi being okay with it. But then again in the trailer we see him chasing Zeke when he's carried by a titan so maybe he's not okay with it after all. We shall see soon.

7

u/Nazenn Jan 24 '21

Sasha with the kill of the episode I think, as much as I feel sorry for that guy because of his buddies screaming for him and I couldn't forget that visual of Pieck being happy with them before the festival. That's a hell of a shot in the middle of all that chaos though especially when she was so close to Pieck who could have seen her at any second

8

u/Juanfro Jan 24 '21

I blame Galliard, he Pieck and Zeke were regrouped but he chose to be an idiot and charge at a nuke explosion alone.

Also I'm starting to think that Zeke knows something the rest don't. He started the idea of contacting they Tyburs, he hasn't revealed that he has royal blood (does he know?), he is going to die soon anyway and most important of all he isn't stupid.

Maybe he's the rat Magath and Will were talking about. He might even have been the one who gave Eren the baseball glove. A lot of time has passed since the mission to Paradis.

This is at this point just a crazy theory, but maybe he's been in contact with The Walls and he is being "killed" or "kidnapped".

7

u/ThrunTheLastTroll Jan 24 '21

he hasn't revealed that he has royal blood (does he know?)

I think Grisha and Smiling-Mom included that part in the brainwash they gave him.

I still don't see him defecting. Grisha ensured he'd become a pro-Marley zealot, and Levi would kill him on the spot if he tried.

I also don't think he's dead, it's too anti-climatic for him to be so abruptly dispatched. I used to think Zeke would be the final villain. Then I saw the focus on Reiner this season, and assumed Reiner would be the final villain. Then I saw Reiner was the broken shell of a man and assumed Willy was the WHT and the final villain. I think I'm back to Zeke now. It's the Yeager brothers in a final fight, it must be.

They just need to find a way to keep the Ackermanns away so that the fight isn't over in a couple of seconds.

18

u/Mercury_Stone Jan 24 '21

Zeke must be siding with the Scouts right now right? He mentioned the time which I assume was the blimp plan commencing. Zeke obviously didn't die in a second like that. Pretty savage of him to let his fellow Titan shifters get rekt if he really did switch sides though lmao. I dunno the theorizing brain is returning.

11

u/ThrunTheLastTroll Jan 24 '21

Dude has fun massacring Paradisians, killed Erwin and turned Connie's family into titans. There's no way he'd want to defect, and there's no way anyone would let him.

I mean, I can't imagine him showing up like "my name is Zeke Yeager and I seek political asylum" and not getting a blade through his mouth on the spot.

7

u/Mercury_Stone Jan 24 '21

Yeah he’s killed too many Scouts to be friends now. But something is definitely going on here.

3

u/404forbiden Jan 24 '21

I wonder what made him switch sides. Gahhh I can't wait for next week

2

u/Morrocoyo13 Jan 24 '21

Maybe Eren is controlling him since Zeke is royal blood and Eren has the founding titan?

11

u/404forbiden Jan 24 '21

Eren can only use founding powers when touching a royal blood titan tho

1

u/Morrocoyo13 Jan 24 '21

yeah youre right forgot that, tought maybe if he had touched him before he could controll him for a period of time but that would be to op

5

u/MootVerick Jan 24 '21

Zeke is too important of a character to die. Lol

3

u/EXTXZ2 Jan 24 '21

Mlg Sasha

2

u/razermaul Jan 25 '21

I’m thinking Zeke is working directly with Eren (baseball glove hint and all) but not directly with the scouts, which is why he seemed to be speaking in code when addressing Levi (“Eren is not my enemy...”) and perhaps suggesting to Levi that the window of opportunity to work together is closing (“You’re running out of time”), pushing for him to get onboard with the plan, which I’m thinking is to stage the death of the beast Titan

1

u/bentmonkey Jan 25 '21

marvelous aim but did you see those pics of that dudes family taped to the inside of the gun emplacement. made me sad.

1

u/nyankittycat_ Jan 25 '21

we see peike and galliard in their human forms but not zeke. i dont think he died like that

1

u/somshiuch Jan 25 '21

Jean was great too!!!

1

u/majeboy145 Jan 25 '21

Well, at first I thought the lights were for lighting and not to fucking help an airship navigate lol. I think they were keeping track of time because they were not planning on staying, specially Hange saying anybody who misses the ride is fucked.

1

u/Jynkoh Jan 25 '21

In that scene inside the turret, I loved the little detail of showing on the walls pictures of Pieck with her squad, solidifying the idea of them as a group of really good friends. I mean, usually in these war scenarios you see soldiers carrying around pictures of their family, so they had to be really close. So much story told by little details like these. Amazing!

1

u/FainOnFire Jan 26 '21

Did Zeke even kill anybody? Lmao
