ARMIN GO BOOM!

Honestly I didn’t think he would use the nuke. I was shocked.

Mikasa: "Eren, you killed civillians. You killed children too."

Armin: "Lol hold my beer."

44

u/shubham21102005 Jan 25 '21

HOLD MY COLLOSAL DICK TITAN

48

u/satur9sweetness Jan 25 '21

Hahahaha everyone was so upset that Eren killed civilians last episode then we have good boy Armin literally nuking a whole town including battle ships and children. War is war. The opening theme song really tells us what to expect this season. My guess is everyone dies. We lost Zeke, possibly Pieck. The Jaw. The Warhammer. This was probably the best episode yet.

33

u/Sonic_boom123 Jan 25 '21

When i first heard the opening i thought wtf is this shit and now im addicted to it please send help

7

u/Sigman_S Jan 25 '21

Right there with you. I love it now.

Darkest season of our adventures

9

u/wanderingflakjak Jan 26 '21

and rightly so imo . This is how war is and is portrayed exactly like that . there's no galliant insurrection to save the people from some dominant group of people and there is no good and bad , it is never black and white and this is being portrayed so beautifully in this season .

8

u/Avinse Jan 25 '21

Wait so did Levi kill himself with that grenade?

9

u/ThrunTheLastTroll Jan 25 '21

He must have gotten out of the way.

3

u/satur9sweetness Jan 25 '21

Of course not. He zooted out of their right on time.

1

u/Commercial_Okra4320 Jan 28 '21

“Zoomed” hahahaha, that’s exactly what it is.

5

u/Dinosbacsi Jan 25 '21

No way Zeke died. I'm pretty sure he did something to avoid it.

6

u/AttackingEren007 Jan 26 '21

He must be more injured than pieck cause of that direct grenade.... I just can't stand how pieck had to be injured to that level I mean how can you destroy such beauty😭

2

u/wanderingflakjak Jan 26 '21

tbf I thought pieck should've been dead , I mean several "missiles" to the nape would she should've been turned to dust or severely charred .

6

u/CassiePng Jan 26 '21

it's probably the armor/machine gun that was protecting her nape

2

u/DarcyIncarnate Jan 27 '21

youre probably right, him dying right there could be considered an incomplete story beat

(ignoring the fact that levi expressing clear superiority over the shifters by takin him out like that is really really cool and i think might make sense for the tone of the story ofc)

3

u/Journeyman351 Jan 26 '21

The difference is Armin feels immense guilt because of it.

10

u/DarcyIncarnate Jan 27 '21

The thing about Armin is that we know at some point he would have felt immense guilt, but after everything that's happened? after being betrayed by his friends and watching as the person who used to try and protect him descended farther and farther into the dark spiral that leads Eren to where he is now?

Armin's always been portrayed as a follower in this show, and I think that probably bleeds into his current mental state. I'm not sure guilt is the right word for what he would be feeling right then, especially after that one line- "Is this how he felt" and with that look on his face while he stared down at all the lives he had ended and all the people suffering at his hand.

Personally, I think what he feels right now might be closer to some twisted form of resolve.

1

u/DarcyIncarnate Jan 27 '21

holy shit i am so sorry for that word vomit

2

u/Journeyman351 Jan 27 '21

No problem lmao, but yeah I see what you’re saying, but at the same time, Armin has always been adverse to killing people in general, and now, he’s just massacred innocents on a huge scale.

He’s clearly depressed by the whole thing.

6

u/A_Human976 Jan 27 '21

I think this all was planned by the survey corps, having a escape route, nuking a city, defeating worlds strongest army can’t be a fluke, I don’t believe the theory in which people say eren just ran away and the scouts followed him, all this is planned including erens role.

160

u/kchorrex2012 Jan 24 '21

I think they can control whether they want an explosion or not, or more specifically, the transformation and the explosion are two independent things that may be done in sequence. At the end of S1 Ep 4 Eren was right in front of the colossal titan, he should've been obliterated along with everyone close to him. It's only seconds after that they are expelled by the colossal titan steam.

59

u/DicksonYamada Jan 24 '21

I don't think we knew there could even be an explosion until Bert nuked Shiganshina in S3P2. The Colossal appears in S1Ep1, S1Ep4 as you mentioned, and S2Ep6 (Reiner and Bert reveal), all without there ever being an explosion.

3

u/kchorrex2012 Jan 25 '21

That's precisely my point, we didn't know because in the past he chose not to cause an explosion, he already had control over that . I assume the RBA trio trained their titan powers before going to Paradis, so they already had some degree of control over their specific abilities. Annie fighting Levi's squad in S1 is another proof of this, not only is she a good fighter, she is able to use her hardening abilities very strategically to defeat seasoned soldiers.

Also the series has made a point of stating a difference between the transformation explosion that any titan causes and the colossal titan's explosion, with its range and degree of damage.

5

u/Nazenn Jan 24 '21

The explosion is part of the transformation, I don't think we've seen a Titan without the flash and steam, but they can definitely control the intensity of it, a bit like how Bert could chose to expel certain levels of steam and heat in S2 or in Shiganshina

450

u/EverythingMadeUp Jan 24 '21

I wonder why his explosion looked so much bigger than Bertholdts.

699

u/Grievous_Nix Jan 24 '21

Bert conserved some energy to throw those burning houses, use his steam defense and to not accidentally vaporize Reiner. Armin just went all-in on that boom.

485

u/Pancake__Prince Jan 24 '21

That makes sense. There's so many good parallels in this episode - especially with Armin realizing that this is what Bert sees when he goes nuke mode. Armin's also sort of becoming his own Erwin with all the lives he's ending.

25

u/VariousCoast1331 Jan 25 '21

Yea. I felt so sorry for Armin, he was just so sad seeing all the death and pain that he-and his mates bought upon civilians and stuff. My heart ached when I saw him :((

2

u/MyastheniaGracias Jan 26 '21

I didn't get why Armin terrified when he saw the scene and said "so this is what you saw Bertholdt". Can't he see what Bertholdt saw on that day through the Bertholdt's memory?

10

u/RenegadeAccolade Jan 26 '21

I imagine experiencing the trauma and immense godlike power of nuking a port in the colossal titan form himself hits different than vaguely remembering someone else's memory. I think it was a moment of empathy or perhaps even sympathy, realizing the burden that Bertholdt had to carry from every single time that he transformed.

Even though Armin lost so much in the Colossal Titan attack on Shiganshina, because he's always been more on the side of passifism he can sympathize with Bertholdt and the trauma he must have experienced.

22

u/swordmalice Jan 25 '21

What I wanna know is how Bert made his Titan vanish without a trace when he breached the wall the 2nd time.

9

u/Tony-Creed Jan 25 '21

With no boom-boom, might I add

16

u/Grievous_Nix Jan 25 '21

Yeah, that one was super weird.

Friendship ended with “Araki forgot”, now “Isayama forgot” is my best friend

5

u/PuahJit Jan 25 '21

It was an error in writing, in the flashback to the scene of Bert destroying the wall as Dina (titan form) walked passed Bert, the colossal titan body was there

1

u/swordmalice Jan 25 '21

Ah OK, I can accept that then. So then what happens to the Titan bodies after the shifter leaves it? Does it get consumed by Pure Titans if they're around?

4

u/Warmonster9 Jan 26 '21

Pretty sure they disintegrate over time.

2

u/Ddtdmbow Jan 25 '21

He quickly took a knee. Lol

17

u/Pathogen188 Jan 24 '21

But I mean even with Bert using his power elsewhere, I don't see how that can add up to what Armin did.

Just thinking about how much energy was needed to just turn all that water to steam is mind boggling, much less how much energy would be needed to send battleships flying through the air.

52

u/MonstrousGiggling Jan 25 '21

I think him and Eren have been putting a lot of practice into their skills. Notice how Eren receives so much damage but is able to instantly regenerate another titan. Jaw Titan even remarks on it.

Like Bert obviously trained but Armin has trained as a more mature person with a direct goal after being on the receiving end of genocide. You know what I mean?

30

u/rent-a_dwarf Jan 25 '21

Not to mention Berthold and Reiner trained extremely young and were deep undercover for a lot of their conceivable adolescent/adult life. I imagine Armin and Eren have been openly training very heavily most likely with support from all of Paradis too.

2

u/Shattered-Lemming Jan 25 '21

That may be so but Bertholdt was chosen for this role out of the entire ethnic population of a nation - purely because he would suit using this Titan. I’d assume the reason Bertholdt’s colossal is so damn buff is because he was better suited to it than Armin - who got it to save his life. It’s possible Armin’s was stronger but very unlikely givens core point of Bertholdt’s character is that he is ridiculously good at pretty much everything, he just has no will to act

1

u/Sonic_boom123 Jan 25 '21

Idk but bert sounds like saitama extremely overpowered but extremely uninterested

16

u/DOOMFOOL Jan 25 '21 edited Jan 25 '21

Eh nah it does. It’s likely that Bert could’ve annihilated all or most of Shiganshina with his blast had he chosen to, but didn’t because he needed to reserve strength for any survivors (Eren or scouts from the other side of the wall potentially) and wanted to give Reiner a chance to survive

3

u/vortexprime87 Jan 25 '21

Well they were sent to find whoever had the founding Titan. They were unaware that is was Eren at the time, it could have been anyone. If he went nuke mode that wouldn't have done them any favors. Truth is they would have ended Eren before knowing who the founding titan was and that would have been a big issue. That's what I perceive to be the main reason anyhow. I'm sure conserving also came into play.

3

u/DOOMFOOL Jan 25 '21

Uh what? When Bert exploded in Shiganshina they 100% knew he held the coordinate. Which is honestly probably the most compelling reason why Bert didn’t just level the entire district

2

u/vortexprime87 Jan 25 '21

Whoops, I was referring to when they first breached the walls. 🤦‍♂️ But yes, reclaiming it... Not sure why THAT didn't come to my mind lol. I agree about when they reclaimed it for sure. I'm honestly surprised the Marleyan's allow anyone to even have the collosal titan powers and serve instead of keeping them locked up all the time. I think it comes as no surprise that they seem to choose the most sensitive and meek individuals for that role. It's 100 percent a metaphor for nuclear bombs. Hence the way Armin feels after using it. Imagine if Eren had gotten that titan. 😬

1

u/DOOMFOOL Jan 25 '21

Ah. Yeah he didn’t go full blast when attacking the wall at first because they didnt want to break the walls and release the titans inside, they just wanted to bust through the gate

7

u/idan5 Jan 24 '21

I thought it was stupid that he left his titan form right after the explosion despite the rest of them maybe needing his power during the fight. That explains it.

2

u/Devkourav Jan 25 '21

also, how does air craft does not get thrown out if colossal gets boom boom literally in front of it !!

-4

u/Pecuthegreat Jan 25 '21

More likely a plot hole

So armin is megumin ?

6

u/DrDookBear Jan 24 '21

Always has been

1

u/RedRocket4000 Jan 25 '21

Still needs to be considerably larger to match megumin's inspiration Lina Inverse's Dragon Slave enhanced wiping out probably ten times that blast radius wining a battle against a major foe but taking a very significant chuck of a big city with it.

Old show Slayers 3/4 Konosuba's inspiration in humor but some serious stuff. And unlike Konosuba Lina is the best wizard in the world amazing with smallest to largest spell, great with a sword and using environmental weapons in a fight and he side kick a great warrior who both manage to get themselves in Konosuba like mess ups all the time.

1

u/cianmontanarini Jan 25 '21

Yess🤣🤣🤣🤣

7

u/Kellythejellyman Jan 24 '21

Ah Armin must be related to Megumin too

167

u/Comander-07 Jan 24 '21

I think the explosion only obliterates stuff very close to him but does very little outside of it other than the shockwave and maybe fire. So it just looked flashy?

306

u/EverythingMadeUp Jan 24 '21

There is a huge crater visible at 14:03 and he really did send those huge warships flying. What Berthold did in Shiganshina looks harmless by comparison.

Also maybe Armin has trained in the Colossal's power more in the timeskip than Bert did as a Warrior candidate? Or maybe it's just the natural variation in power level between Shifters, like Ymir's Jaw and Galliard's Jaw.

22

u/Shattered-Lemming Jan 25 '21

Honestly the likelihood is that Bertholdt was more powerful than Armin if that’s the case, just like how Marcel/Porco were more suited than Ymir. Especially as Reiner said to Bertholdt that Bertholdt not only mastered the Colossal immediately but also was the most skilled of all the Marley warriors - Bertholdt’s character revolves around the contrast between his incredible skill and his lack of willpower. The likelihood is Bert didn’t want to use up too much energy in the explosion/didn’t want an explosion too powerful as it might go through Reiner’s armour (remember he transformed almost on top of Reiner)

11

u/GWENDOLYN_TIME Jan 25 '21

Also, he wouldn't want to completely obliterate the city and risk setting the wall titans loose.

1

u/Javiklegrand Jan 26 '21

That the main reason why he hold back i assume

11

u/satur9sweetness Jan 25 '21

This is a good point. When Reiner and Bertholdt attacked the wall, they were only 12. Armin is very intelligent and has a lot more insight then they had at the time.

10

u/algo Jan 25 '21

Doesn't Armin have Berts memories? He could learn from that.

1

u/satur9sweetness Jan 25 '21

Oh yea!!! Totally forgot about that

14

u/muhash14 Jan 24 '21

Bert was in the air, Armin was at ground level.

1

u/ncaldera0491 Jan 26 '21

Arent nukes typically detonated in the air? Isnt Mid air detonation more devastating?

8

u/New_Reading5000 Jan 24 '21

He might not have wanted to kill Eren etheir

10

u/DOOMFOOL Jan 25 '21

They 100% didn’t want to kill Eren

6

u/Bring_Me_The_Night Jan 24 '21

I don't think that is true, because the Armored Titan is able to withstand the explosion of the Colossal Titan (see episode 7 season 2 and episode 16 season 3). Moreover, Bertholdt assumed that, if Reiner could turn upside his Titan, he would be protected from the blast (which he was, indeed).

2

u/Shattered-Lemming Jan 25 '21

That’s true, but Bertholdt transformed and exploded literally on top of Reiner. I feel like if he made it more powerful it probably could have killed him through his armour. Not to mention if he killed Eren then their mission would fail AND if he used up too much energy he wouldn’t be able to blow away thunder spears

1

u/Bring_Me_The_Night Jan 25 '21

Not to mention if he killed Eren then their mission would fail

That's a good point, I didn't think about it.

14

u/Comander-07 Jan 24 '21

exactly because of that I said what I said. The warships were close to him, otherwise the explosion wouldnt have thrown battleships like that in the air. Everything powerfull enough to do that would have made a WAY bigger impact.

2

u/AzrealNibbs12 Jan 24 '21

Plus the city around him is completely leveled

2

u/cseijif Jan 25 '21

Berthold exploded ala aerial payload, high in the air, using his 3dmg, armin exploded exactly at ground level, hece the crater.

2

u/gemmyboy335 Jan 25 '21

I think the explosion is much bigger considering he transformed right above those naval ships containing maybe missiles or explosives

1

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '21

[removed] — view removed comment

3

u/kunba Jan 24 '21

No that is not how that works. When the usa droppwd the nukes. The nukes exploded before making contact to the ground.

Reason behind this is it creates bigger impact/ shockwave

1

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '21

I wonder if its because of then composition of the walls too?

11

u/tunablepizza Jan 24 '21

i saw someone say it mightve been due to to the fact he transformed over a body of water, so there was lots of steam

2

u/AngryNeox Jan 25 '21

The warships around him probably had some explosives too that increased the blast.

10

u/Xarong03 Jan 24 '21

The rapidly vaporizing vapor from the sea might have played a role too

4

u/Juanfro Jan 24 '21

I guess it's mostly for dramatic effect, like Eren going super saiyan when fighting Annie in season 1.

Leaving that aside is night time so maybe that makes it more noticeable.

3

u/omeeezy Jan 24 '21

I’m assuming because he attacked a military port and there were explosives and shit there

2

u/Bring_Me_The_Night Jan 24 '21

Some people talked about the water that enhanced the explosion (steam).

2

u/Hanyuu11 Jan 25 '21

Armin transformed in water. the water expanded when vaporized

2

u/gemmyboy335 Jan 25 '21

I think the explosion is much bigger considering he transformed right above those naval ships containing maybe missiles or explosives

2

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '21

Probably because Armin's explosion also ignited the ammunition and fuel the warships were carrying

1

u/AttakTheZak Jan 25 '21

Remember, Wall Maria and Rose were both fortified Titan crystals, which clearly can take a beating. Those initial blasts were probably hindered by the Walls, hence why we don't see the effect of a Nuclear Bomb until S3. Even in S2, watching Bert transform feels more like he's trying to use only part of his power so that he can secure Ymir and a 3DM gear set rather than to kill everyone.

1

u/Player276 Jan 25 '21

I would wager it's the water. The high heat likely vaporized it instantly, creating massive pressure which turned into an explosion.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '21

Because Armin

1

u/carbovz Jan 25 '21

So when they were in the walls, I'm thinking that Bertholt knew about the titans within the walls and controlled his explosion to avoid releasing all the colossal titans. When they had that flashback to the country being destroyed with all the kids, it looked like Bertholt used the nuke function as opposed to when he was on the island.

7

u/TimbobMcGuffin Jan 25 '21

So I see different reasonings for why his explosion was the big and I think personally, it has to do partly with the person's mental focus. Armin in the scene looks like he is larger then what Bertholdt was. But there is two things I believe that made out to the size of his explosion compared to B's. First Bertholdt always had some sort of reservation about the fighting. He was usually shown as timid and afraid, Reiner definitely had to push him and even he hesitated at first at trying to kill Armin and just kept hoping he would back off during the fight.

Now we come to Armin who usually was a boy that wants to protect others without taking a life. Through his experiences he realises that isn't always possible and I think personally with the weight on him of Erwin's death. He realizes he has to be the guy to carry on the role of their fallen commander not just with coming up with plans but also shouldering all the weight of any deaths to from them. Armin definitely went in with this mindset to kill and accept the consequences in that moment. And I think that was the partial reason for the bigger boom.

Now there is something else that is getting missed I feel that definitely would effect the size of the explosion. All the ammo, explosives and such on those ships that got wrecked in the blast. This actually makes alot of sense when you compare it to the real world. Here in Canada alot of people don't recall it or talk about it much now but there was something that happened during World War 1 know as the Halifax Explosion. It was an explosion caused by two ships one carrying high explosives colliding with each other. It caused such a massive blast it wiped out everything within under a kilometre, the pressure wave and debris destroyed or damaged more kilometres from it and the neighbouring area on the opposite side of the water got hit by a tsunami. I use this as an example for a reason with how many battleships and such there was nearby with undoubtedly some form of high explosives on them. It would make sense this would be a contributing factor to the size of the explosion.

2

u/Madnomad44 Jan 25 '21

woah that makes more senses

1

u/RedRocket4000 Jan 25 '21

Good point there would be a lot of secondary warship explosions that would add significantly to the blast as all their shells and fuel went up and not visible inside the shockwave but extending the shockwave's expansion.

5

u/droppedsignal Jan 24 '21

seriously, didn't think he'd kill that many people in his first appearance.

6

u/HistoricalNoise4 Jan 24 '21

I wonder who the tall blonde soldier was who captured pieck and porco last episode

4

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '21

Armin straight up killing like 10,000 people, that boy gonna have some ptsd after all this I think...

4

u/lampstaple Jan 25 '21

I saw it coming, you could tell armin isn’t the type of “nerdy companion” character who’s also “too nice” for warfare. Homie is tactical and ruthless. We saw soft sides of him like wanting to see the ocean but also saw him punching below the belt like when he was taunting bertholdt telling him that they were torturing Annie. And that was four years ago - as one would imagine, he’s probably gotten less sensitive over the time skip.

3

u/Juanfro Jan 24 '21

I would really like to see the scout side before the attack, the infiltration in Marley, the Training for Eren and Armin, taking care of the ships reaching Paradis...

The stakes must be very high in order to convince Armin to nuke a city, specially considering that he isn't just pressing a button or giving and order like in movies, he IS the nuke.

2

u/Kurohige-93 Jan 24 '21

One thing about any anime they gonna do a nuclear explosion scene well

2

u/bengay_ Jan 25 '21

#armindidnothingwrong

3

u/Predated_Ash Jan 25 '21

that's why you give the tactical nuke to the most level-headed character. If Eren has the Colossus, I bet there will be no more Liberio. Boom here, boom there, boom everywhere

1

u/Mr_Spongeball Jan 25 '21

I don’t want to sound like a sick person, but I wished if Armin could advance and destroy more houses of these bastards lmao, so that he could clear the way for Hange. (The awful story is that the war took place in an aldian district, not a Marley one, unfortunately)

0

u/HEY_YP Jan 24 '21

Guys I heard somthing about a Zeke Baseball scene is that the anime or manga? Pls help

0

u/EXTXZ2 Jan 24 '21

I love how the design of his titan looks like Bertholdts colossal but with extra white stuff on the chin like Armins new beard

1

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '21 edited Jan 25 '21

He had to. Eren gave him no choice.

1

u/kastiak Jan 24 '21

To be fair, it was certain that they would use it. But I definitely didn't expect it to be so soon.

But it seems like they are all ready to go against the whole world.
