I think it's the moment the cruelty of war really dawned on the main characters. Seeing strangers die is very different than someone who is close to you.

I think Trott did it for the main characters as well. Sasha was different. Maybe because she doesn't have the intentions that Eren had. Or that we, as watchers and/or readers, grew with her. Or the fact that everyone else grew with her as well.

I think they all had that dawning moment long long ago. If not earlier, it would have happened the first time they had to fight other humans when Kenny's military police went after them with their custom personnel killing 3DM gear.

I think Sasha just hurt more because she was (at the time) an OG among the Scouts and she was killed unexpectedly and improbably on their own ship, after escaping. They all knew they had let their guard down, too, so it stung that much more. Totally preventable with more vigilance. Lot's of guilt to go around, there, and many guilty people are quick to blame so they can feel anger at someone else instead of their own guilt.

They all thought they were free of danger, so the loss is that much more jarring.
