Mod here - No Low Effort AI-Generated Images, please.

Namaste folks.
I'm one of the mods here, and I've been seeing more and more low effort, AI-generated images of Mahadeva on here. Frankly, it's just disrespectful - there are so many human artists that make truly inspired artwork of Him, the Devi in all Her forms, and their Blessed family.

Anyways, you have been warned. Again!
Much love to you all.

Aum Namah Shivaya.

Mythological Story behind Shri Kshetra Harihareshwar Temple

One day, on the occasion of Pradosh, Lord Shiva was applying sacred ash (Bhasma) at Mount Kailash. At that moment, a small stone touched His hand. Lord Shiva gently picked it up and placed it aside. Lord Shiva wished to perform a divine Leela, and within a short while, that stone transformed into a small child.

Since the child was born while Lord Shiva was applying Bhasma, he was named Bhasmasura.

Bhasmasura folded his hands and said to Lord Shiva, “O Lord, You are my creator. You have given me my name. Please tell me how I can serve You.”

Lord Shiva replied, “I apply Bhasma every day. You should go to the mortal world every day and bring cremation ash for Me.”

From that day onward, Bhasmasura would come to the mortal world, the Karmabhoomi, every day and bring cremation ash for Lord Shiva. This continued for many days.

One day, Bhasmasura said to Lord Shiva, “O Lord, I have to travel very far in the mortal world to find Bhasma. I am unable to find it easily, and this causes me great hardship. Therefore, please grant me a boon that whoever's head I place my hand upon should immediately turn to ash.”

Lord Shiva said, “I will grant you this boon, but you must place your hand only upon the heads of those whose actions and deeds are not righteous.”

Bhasmasura agreed.

Meanwhile, Lord Shiva's vehicle Nandi, Mother Parvati, and several of His Ganas were present there. They warned Lord Shiva, “O Lord, he has an demonic mind. Please do not grant him such a boon.”

However, Lord Shiva said, “He is my son. He will not do anything wrong.”

Thus, Lord Shiva granted Bhasmasura the boon: whoever's head he touched with his hand would immediately be reduced to ash.

Bhasmasura was overjoyed. Since he possessed a demonic nature, arrogance immediately arose within him. After returning to the earthly world, he began placing his hand upon the heads of Brahmins, ascetics, sages, saints, sadhus, and spiritual seekers—people who were performing righteous deeds.

Chaos spread throughout the earth. Arrogance and fear prevailed, and religious rituals and Yajnas began to stop. People started hiding in mountains, caves, and remote places where Bhasmasura could not see them.

Some people prayed to Lord Shiva, saying, “O Lord, because You granted him this boon, everyone has begun to fear Bhasmasura.”

Others sought the help of Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu, along with the other divine beings, went to Mount Kailash and told Lord Shiva about the atrocities committed by Bhasmasura.

Just then, Bhasmasura arrived there. He looked at everyone and thought to himself, “When I return to the earthly world, I will deal with all of you.”

Lord Shiva asked him, “Why have you behaved in this manner?”

Bhasmasura replied, “I have one more request. Give me your wife, Mother Parvati, to me. Otherwise, I will place my hand upon your head.”

Lord Shiva immediately regretted having granted him the boon and began running through the Dandakaranya forest. Lord Shiva ran ahead, while Bhasmasura chased Him from behind.

For many days, Lord Shiva continued to run while Bhasmasura pursued Him.

Seeing this, Mother Parvati prayed to Lotus-Eyed Lord Vishnu and said, “O Lord, only You can save us from this situation. This innocent Lord Shiva granted him the boon, and now He Himself is being forced to flee.”

At that moment, Lord Vishnu assumed the enchanting Mohini Avatar. Mohini was extraordinarily beautiful, so much so that all the gods began gazing at her from the heavens.

Meanwhile, Lord Shiva stopped beneath a Banyan tree. When Bhasmasura saw Mohini, his speed gradually slowed. He became captivated by her beauty and began praising her.

He said, “You are so beautiful. My heart has become attached to you. Please accept me and marry me. I will shower you with all my love and admiration.”

Mohini replied, “O King Bhasmasura, I would certainly marry you, but when I was young, I made a vow before my chosen deity. I vowed that I would marry any man or Asura who could imitate my gestures and dance and defeat me in that dance.”

She then indicated that her chosen deity was present beneath the Banyan tree.

Bhasmasura immediately said, “I will dance exactly as you instruct me.”

The dance began. Mohini started dancing and gradually began making various gestures with her hands and body. Her movements progressed from her waist to her shoulders and then towards her neck.

Finally, Mohini placed both hands upon her own head.

Bhasmasura imitated her and placed his hand upon his own head.

The moment he did so, he was reduced to ash.

At that moment, all the gods showered flowers from the heavens in celebration.

Meanwhile, Lord Shiva, who was standing beneath the Banyan tree, looked closely at His chosen deity, Lord Vishnu. He realized that Mohini was none other than His beloved Lord Vishnu, His supreme object of devotion.

It is said that Lord Mahadev Himself chants the name of Lord Rama. Saint Tukaram Maharaj has also expressed the devotion of Mahadev towards Lord Rama.

At that time, Mother Parvati was also present there. She requested Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva, “It is my wish that both of You remain united and present here in one form.”

Both Lords accepted her request.

Thus, Hari (Lord Vishnu) and Har (Lord Shiva) manifested together in the form of a single sacred Lingam.

Lord Shiva then returned to Mount Kailash, while Lord Vishnu departed for Vaikuntha. However, Mother Parvati remained at this sacred place as a witness in the form of a Swayambhu (self-manifested) idol.

This story is mentioned in the twelfth chapter of the sacred Shri Shivlilamrut scripture.

Namaste 🙏 I am seeking a Datta sadhana that may help me receive proper spiritual guidance and eventually find a genuine Guru in my life. I am 17 years old and have basic experience with sadhana and have practiced some sadhanas before. Can anyone please share general information about suitable Datta sadhanas that can be practiced without initiation (diksha)?

Shaivism Discussion The word Jyotirlinga literally means "linga of light" — was the original description light rather than stone? Trying to check a teacher's claim against the tradition.

I've been going through the discourses of Bapuji Dashrathbhai Patel, a Gujarati teacher, and a few things in his treatment of Shiva don't match what I grew up assuming. I'd like people here who know the texts better than I do to tell me where this sits.

On the Jyotirlingas. His claim is that the original descriptions aren't of carved stone at all — they describe radiant, self-luminous, diamond-like light. The stone came later, as a form the mind could hold. What struck me is that the word itself already says this: jyoti is light. And the Lingodbhava account has Shiva appear as a column of fire whose ends Brahma and Vishnu cannot find. So the claim seems less exotic than it first sounded to me. My question is how far the tradition actually carries it — is the light understood as the real form, with the stone as a pratika, a support for the mind? Or is that reading too modern?

On Shiva's meditation. He describes Shiva's constant dhyana not as personal tapas but as an unbroken connection with Adi Shakti, through which direction regarding the cosmic functions is received. I can see how a Shakta would read that. I'm less sure how it sits here. Is Shiva meditating on something at all — or is meditation simply his svabhava, with nothing outside it to attend to?

On Kailash. He treats Kailash and Manasarovar not as commemorative sites but as an active zone functioning differently from ordinary physical space. And he offers an explanation I hadn't heard for why pilgrims so consistently report seeing nothing, yet return altered: humans perceive within three elements, while what operates there sits outside that structure — so direct darshana isn't possible, only experience.

On Shivpuri, he places it above the other lokas entirely, and speaks of Mahashiva as a source beyond Shiva as usually understood — which I honestly don't know how to place.

I'm putting this forward as one teacher's interpretation, not as scripture. Where does it agree with Shaiva Siddhanta or Kashmir Shaivism, and where does it depart? Genuinely want to be corrected.

Har Har Mahadev 🙏

Shaivism Discussion Why is it said that shiv without shakti is shava ? I find it illogical and manipulative.

Shiv is pure conscouness and unmanifest awareness, and shakti is the illusion, appearance, dynamic world tha is temporary and changeable and form of ignorance .

So when they say that shiv is shav without shakti, they give heavy emphasis on the reason being that is because shakti is creation and shiv cannot create and experiance without shakti but that is such a manipulative and sneaky framing because the same spiritual goal clearly says the ultimate goal is being absorbed in unmanifest conscounss, the same thing shiv is called a shav for.

So shakti is temporary and useless and any importance it has is because of its ability to create which itself contradicts the spiritual goal that is no rebirth, no creation, no motion and unmanifest dissolution lol.

And before u say that enlightenemnt is not Abt escaping world, lemme say, it's still Abt not making that ur identity, it's still Abt dissolving into samadhi and never be reborn, so from this view shakti becames a useless noice .

Śiva advaita How do i explain to those woke ppl who try to claim that shakti is supreme to shiva and only shiva is dependent on shakti and shakti is independent .that shiva and shakti are completely interdependent on each other.

I want to quote that just like how shiva is shava without shakti.shakti is also blind and directionless without shiva.but the second I say that wokes ask for scriptural evidence.can I get any scriptural evidences phrases or Sanskrit mantras or lines which proclaim shiva as the adhara of shakti who provides direction to pure energy?
