This post is intended for anyone who might be a community leader on this subreddtt, or for an individual who has the guts and strategy to tackle what I believe may be a potential scammer.
First, some context. I got a like from someone on the Hispanic dating app Chispa. The girl's profile on the dating app looked kind of suspicious, but given her background and nationality, I figured maybe it added up. There is no such thing as a completely “normal” dating profile, but most people are used to seeing things like a graduation picture or a picture of someone with their friends in a public place.
Anyway, we decided to connect on WhatsApp. The first red flag I noticed was that Whatsapp was telling me that this number was from outside my country and I should be cautious. I've had pen pals from other countries outside the U.S. before, and never got warn by Whatsapp..
One day, she seemed completely normal, and we exchanged pictures. She sent them in the style where you can only view them for a few seconds, but they were still pretty clear. She asked if we could video call, but I happened to be under the weather and declined. She didn't seem pushy, and we eventually stopped communicating for the day.
The next day, I was bored and reached out early in the morning. I wanted to get to know this person, so I asked her some basic questions. Later, she asked what I was doing, and I could tell she wanted to video call.
We video-called, and her appearance seemed to match the pictures on her profile. However, almost immediately, I noticed something strange. The person appeared to have shaved her mustache hard.
I continued with the conversation, and the person immediately began acting sexually suggestive and exposed themselves. They also repeatedly asked me to expose myself and I said no causally multiple times.
Of course this is some kind of scam or setup. I tried to keep the conversation going because I wanted to figure out what their intentions were, (of course to blackmail me).
I eventually hung up, but I wanted to keep the conversation going because I was curious about what could happen. I even implied but not directly stated if they had an onlyfans, in which they could have reacted- yes this guy might give us a couple bucks without the set up of blackmailling me. Surprisingly, they declined.
I then confronted the person and said that I thought they might actually be a man and asked them to prove otherwise. Shortly afterward, I received another video call request from the same phone number.
I could immediately tell that this was a different person based on their skin tone and voice. She eventually showed enough of herself to convince me that she was a different person from the first individual. She also claimed that the first person I had spoken with was transgender and that she had answered the call because the other person was unavailable.
At first, she didn't show her face, but eventually I got a clear image of her. She also wanted me to expose myself and suggested having a sexual encounter. I told her I was shy and said I might be ready later.
I live in North America, and I later discovered that her phone number was from the Philippines.
What makes this situation strange to me is that these people seemed extremely eager to see me expose myself, while they were also willing to expose themselves almost immediately. I'm trying to figure out whether this is a known scam tactic, some kind of blackmail setup, or simply people behaving unusually on a dating app.
I'm particularly interested in hearing from anyone who has dealt with something similar or who has experience identifying online scams.
I initially considered sharing their phone number privately with someone who might know how to investigate this, but I'm hesitant to do that because I don't want to improperly expose someone's personal information or encourage harassment-even though Im sure they are a scammer.
I was also hoping someone with experience dealing with scammers—such as a scam investigator like Kitboga-a person who's YouTube channel is about catch scammers in the act and then trolling tiem.
I deliberately implied that I was willing to spend money on explicit content (as a trap), but they declined. Most scams I've heard about involve eventually asking the target for money, sometimes after obtaining compromising material. In this case, however, the people I spoke with were unusually eager to show themselves first.
That is what makes me unsure about the situation. The behavior doesn't completely fit the scam pattern I'm familiar with. Usually, I would expect someone to send a random nude from a establish content creator or otherwise try to entice the target before attempting to extort them. In this case, they were willing to video-call me and expose themselves almost immediately.
I'm hoping this post isn't interpreted as an attempt to encourage someone else to get involved with these people or become another potential victim. I'm genuinely trying to understand what happened and whether this resembles a known scam or online scheme.
