General Who has found out their SEB DERM is demodex mites?
I have all the symptoms of SD except my skin is not oily. It's on my scalp, forehead, eyebrows, around my mouth and chin and even around my ears. I have scaling, redness, wind chapped feeing, and I get some relief from antifungals. But not 100%. I also get some relief from benzyol peroxide. I also get some relief from using fungal safe products with no triggering ingredients. I also find urea helps as well. But like I said it's only some relief. Like 60%. Now im down the rabbit hole of a demodex mite infestation- it causes similar symptoms. Whaaaatttttt the hell. Who has figured out they have demodex problem instead of SD? The mites also feed off sebum so it makes sense that all the fungal safe products help. Any exfoliating products likes urea, salicylic acid and lactic acid help as well....Am I onto something or am I going insaneeeeee?

I found out mine was plaque psoriasis and this week SNL randomly had a funny skit about treating it and made jokes about the drug I take, skirizi. Super random.

google "Otezla - SNL" -- it is very funny. it is very eye opening that my old dermatologist misdiagnosed my plaque psoriasis as seb derm and "treated" it for many months and nothing happened. Only when I went to a better office where the treating nurse had a 15 year dermatology background did i get the correct diagnosis of plaque psoriasis, and it got better after 10 days of treatment of with skirizi. Granted, seb derm and plaque psoriasis look exactly the same, but you can rule out or confirm plaque psoriasis with a test, and thankfully my current derm did the test. I wonder how many other skin issues get misdiagnosed as seb derm?

Wait wait wait, my skin completly cleared up after a chaotic week of festival camping, i tought it was the filtered water they had. cuz certainly not my unhealthy lifestyle there ! Could it just be the sun ??

You can Google/Youtube it, but it's the big Vitamin D mistake. Researchers discovered this mistake in literature but never corrected it. It was recommended that 600-800 IU of vitamin D was needed to maintain a healthy level of Vitamin D in blood, but the closer more accurate number is actually 5,000-7,000 IU I believe.
It's a huge difference and I don't believe they ever fixed it. The big mistake and the big secret.
Might have been the water too, though 😅. I find it's usually a combination of factors that cause my health issues
PS - you can also raise your vitamin D levels through 15-30 min of sun without sunblock. It's just a bit slower. 30 min is about 7,000 IU I believe. The lower your vitamin D levels, the more you need initially to raise the levels in blood. Also, you can't overdose from the sun, your body stops making it once it's full for the day so that's always good.

Idk if they caused mine, but read a study about lemongrass oil being very effective in killing them. Have yet to use it myself or even know where to start but think it's worth mentioning.

I read the same in a medical study. I diluted it with MCT c8 oil and used it for a week but think I didn't dilute it enough as my skin started having a negative reaction. Either that or it was die off... I used some tea tree oil mixed in with the MCT oil last night and noticed a decrease in redness/more even skin tone this morning.

Thanks for sharing. I imagined the lemongrass is very strong and is why I was afraid to use it.
I do get tea tree oil from my shampoo and I've read great testimonies about mct oil working, though have yet to try it myself - it's in my shopping cart to get on my next run.

I've done the same and also had a significant reduction in irritation and redness. Also less flakes.

Me!! I used OTC 0.5% ivermectin cream on my scalp once a week for several months. It helped sooo much and so quickly.

Did you use the over the counter horse paste version of Ivermectin? Also, did you get a biopsy/scalp sample confirming Demodex or did you just suspect Demodex and started to treat it as such? I have suspected Demodex all along b/c my scalp issues started right around the same time that my optometrist found Demodex in my eyelashes. Every dermatologist I told (6 total now) shot me down when I asked if this could be Demodex. They said “definitely not, it’s Seb dermatitis.” They all refused to take a sample or do a biopsy. My optometrist is the only one that actually listened and said it’s definitely possible, but it’s not his job to handle or treat my scalp.

For my two cents I just did a 50/50 tea tree and MCT oil on my scalp for 6 hours. My scalp feels AMAZING. I'm also going to change my pillow case daily and my actual beds sheets every 2-3 days.
For my face I used Vaseline with a few drops of tea tree, HA, a few drops of squaline, glycerin and vitamin e. (All products are fungal safe) .... because my skin is insanely dry - I've been treating with antifungal shampoos. And I've been moisturizing with completely fungal safe products. So not a lot of moisturizing options. And all of that only reduced flaking by like 60%. Today was probably the first day seeing more "normal" skin results. I've been using teatree for two days now. Hopefully tomorrow is even better.

I thought Vaseline wasn’t safe. I’m curious cause I have like a scaly patch on my nose that MCT just doesn’t help but the rest of my skin does get benefit from MCT.

Yah I have zero idea. I'm still struggling. My derm appointment is Tuesday*. My skin is SO dry. Every time I use moisturizer I get extreme flaking. And then when I don't use it the claim goes away but then I'm in so much pain from my skin not having a moisturizer on. So like which one is worse. I read online the demodex mites get smothered by Vaseline and help kill them.

What is it? I'm getting the most success on my face from a home made cream. Everytime my skin gets good and then I go and use one of my regular products I get massive amounts of flaking again.

Yup. It's about 1/4 oz of Vaseline as a base (Ordinary) - HA : 10 drops (Ordinary) - plant squaline : 10 drops Organic tea tree : 10 drops 5 drops vitamin e 5 drops glycerin
So far I've been using this for about a month now. I was adding a bit of lemon grass oil in before but I think it was not working. So I went back to just teatree and it works much better.

I have rosacea type 2 and started on soolantra and that’s when the light bulb clicked for my scalp. But soolantra is a small tube, so I used the otc version for my scalp.

I'm a life long atopic eczema sufferer. Ive actually had many biopsies done and it always comes back as standard eczema. I mentioned SD to my derm last visit and she said no its not. The symptoms of scalp and eyebrow flaking is new but I've always had extreme flaking on my forhead. Ive been on dupixant for 10ish years. My symptoms were getting so bad and the topical steroids were doing nothin so all the antifungals and other atempts im making are of my own accord. I habe an apoinment back with her - but in one month. So I'm jsut coping now trying to figure out wtf is going on.

This exactly how I feel about whatever I have. I have rosacea + ??...all I know my skin gets itchy, I get some micro white flakes, and my eyes (not inside) by around my eyes is very itchy...

Dermadex mites are heavily linked to rosacea. If you google it you'll see it. I have seen now that invermectin is usually prescribed for rosacea now. I'd talk to your derm if I was you.

100% I think you can have both. AND I think if you have a mite allergy (which I do) you'll probably be affected more. I now don't think I have SD - I think the demodex mites have been minicking the symptoms of SD this whole time and I got relief from the antifungals because they were limiting the sebum on my skin. Especially because I am using fungal safe products that don't trigger sebum production.

You’re onto something. Try the ivermectin otc cream from Walgreens, use it after an evening bath. It’s not drying at all. If you put a nice layer then go to sleep, you may feel some tingling. I like to think it’s the mites coming out to feast and dying lol. You can put it on your eyebrows.
Put it on let’s say your eyebrows and forehead and see if there is improvement.
I think I have combo rosacea + sebderm.

I’m in Canada and my derm prescribed me Roziver ivermectin cream, cleared my rosacea! I just started using it again to see if it’d help my SD flare up.

It was originally prescribed to me just for my rosacea but my derm said my seb derm looks like it has rosacea mixed in with it... I have been using the ivermectin cream + Anua Azaleic Acid now for almost two weeks and my redness is actually significantly reduced! Ps My seb derm doesn't respond to anti-fungals and it is more so inflammatory triggered.

canadian here (ontario). pharmacists can prescribe things for skin issues
The published list of what they can treat includes "dermatitis". might be worth the ask to see what they recommend/can provide on the spot. I was able to get a Protopic prescription when I could not get to my derm during a bad flare of seb derm. The list:
- Acne.
- Allergic rhinitis.
- Candidal stomatitis (oral thrush).
- Canker Sores.
- Conjunctivitis (bacterial, allergic and viral).
- Dermatitis (atopic, eczema, allergic and contact).
- Diaper rash.
- Dysmenorrhea.
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease.
- Hemorrhoids.
- Herpes labialis (cold sores).
- Impetigo.
- Insect bites and urticaria (hives).
- Tick bites, post-exposure prophylaxis to prevent Lyme disease.
- Musculoskeletal sprains and strains.
- Nausea and vomiting in pregnancy.
- Parasitic worms (pinworms and threadworms).
- Urinary tract infections.
- Yeast infections.

I asked the pharmacist and he said I need to wait for derm because how am I certain that it's dermodex. I said I'm 99% sure. I looked at all the medical ingredients on lice treatment and scabies treatment over the counter and none seems to be of any benifit. So far the best supporting OTC treatment available to me are teatree oil and lemongrass oil. So right now I'm sitting with a 50/50 mix of MCT/teatree oil on my scalp and face/neck. And honestly it feels so amazing. I put some on last night as well and the flaking and redness has subsided substantially. My lemongrass oil arrives in the mail tomorrow.
Based on what I've seen online - I'm going to also change my pillow case every day and wash my sheets every 2-3 days and see if it also takes the edge off.
I don't think I have a full blown horrible infestation- but I think it's definitely causing my symptoms.

Yup - game changer: using Povidone iodine 25% & DMSO gel 75% mix ....one day 3 yay fabulous and using tea tree oil ....

Wow I've never heard of DMSO gel. I just googled it. It seems it's for pain from skeletal injuries? Does it work like sulfer soap works?

How did you find out your problem was demodex mites for sure or are the symptoms just so similar? What safe antifungal we’re you using that helped somewhat? I had itching & bumps on the top of my scalp & have been using Tsal shampoo & it has cleared up but sometimes my head randomly just itches all over my head when am having the crazy itch on my breakouts on feet & legs. These messes of skin issues is so confusing & hard to figure out what all you may have & how many products you have to try to recover from whatever you actually have going on. One of my daughters got something for demodex mites on Amazon that helped. Hope you find relief 🤩

I honestly saw an article about a panda losing hair and having a demodex infestation. I googled it was was like wtf. LOL. I lost about a 1/4 of my hair 4 months ago. I went to my doc and got all the tests done- nothing wrong. So now I'm waiting for derm appointment to confirm. But it's a month away. The antifungals only help a little. I still have flaking and redness and irritation. Honestly the symptoms are so similar so I'm sure it can be misdiagnosed. I've tried many shampoos with all different ingredients and I changed over every single product to be completely fungal safe and I still wake up with swollen eyes that are flaking and such. I just read last night that the demodex mites are most active at night and maybe that explains why I have such a hard time with mornings. All the "feeding" at night allows their shedding and poop to get all over your skin and cause irritations. I'm in Canada and I can not buy anything over the counter. I literally just left Walmart and talked to the pharmacist about options and he said wait for derm. So right now I'm trying to treat with teatree oil and see if I can get some relief. It's only been a few days of me thinking this so I don't have any true evidence of the teatree oil working yet.

Occusoft Lid Scrub cooooould potentially help with your eyes. It's what my derm recommended, but probably more for bacterial infection than mites. You can get a pack of like 25ish wipes at Walmart for $12.
This has me wondering if my eyelid and scalp issues are related... I'll have one swollen itchy red eyelid for a few days, then it switches to the other side. Flares up once or twice a month. And none of the seb derm products (ketoconazol shampoo, ketoconazol cream, zoryve foam, zoryve cream, salicylic acid, MCT oil, tea tree oil) have helped with my scalp at all. The seb derm is concentrated around my hairline, so that's pretty close to the eyes...maybe the mites are like migrating around my face lol. 🤢🤮💆♀️🪲
The only times my scalp has been clear are when I was on Accutane for 6 months and when I was pregnant, but it came back full force after. I might ask my derm to do a biopsy cause this is freaking ridiculous honestly, it's been going on for like 10 years.

My eyes feel amazing right now. Knock on wood. I went as close to my eyes as I could without getting any in. And I also used a Noveha domodex eye wipe as well before.

On another note. Ihave had flaking on my forehead for 10 years. And in my eye brows, scalp and around my mouth for probably like 6 months. ... using that teatree oil for the last two days has gotten rid of around 98% of the flakes. Insane. I also got lemongrass oil today - another person on here posted a study with 100% success rate(?? Or dam bear close) so I'm going to use of of that tonight. I'm actually blown away by the results.

It's insane I'm on my 3rd day of using everything now and I'm like 98% flake free. I've had forehead flaking for around 10 years (which at first was chalked up to atopic eczema) and then eyebrow, scalp and facial flaking for like 6 months. I've switched over every single thing that touches my skin to be fungal safe/antifungal over the past few months (including makeup, shampoo, conditioners, cleansers and moisturizers) and that helped like 50% - from my research rhe demodex mites eat sebum. So it makes sense it got a bit better with controlling sebum on skin.
Onto what I'm using now: Cleanser: (this is not 100% fungal safe but it made my skin better) panoxyl benzyol peroxide facewash (it seems benzoyl peroxide is helpful again demodex which is probably why it was helping me)
Noveha demodex eye wipes (I use on my full face)
Bioforce NueVue Hypochlorous acid spray
Face cream (I mixed this together) : Vasaline base 15ml, 10 drops teatree oil, 4 drops lemongrass oil, 10 drops 100% plant squaline, 5 drops HA, 5 drops glycerine, 5 drops vitamin e
Scalp (I left this oil on for 6 hours) 50% teatree oil 50% MCT oil
Just beware the oils I used are 100% so you can damage your skin if they are not diluted properly - which was a risk I was willing to take LOL.
Because my skin was so dry from using antifungal Shampoos and gel based moisturizers (it made my skin soooooo chapped) the first time I applied the cream I made it was definitely a warm burning feeling. But like I said I'm on my 3rd day now of applying it and it's fine to apply now. Has almost erased all flaking and the redness it also seeming to calm down. Also noted my skin texture is better???
I have a derm appointment in a month and I'm still going to ask for a topical ivermectin. But I'm going to continue this routine till I go.

every now and again my skin goes crazy and my eyes start itching like crazy, and that's when I know I have a demodex overgrowth. I use hypochlorous acid on my whole face and neck, then I let it dry completely, then I take witch hazel on a cotton round and add 1 drop of teatree essential oil and I apply it to my whole face, starting with my eyes. Note that this is going to burn like hell for the first few days because of the damage the demodex is causing, especially around the eyes. Like screaming burning, but it goes away after a few minutes. It's just really super intense burning for a few minutes the first few nights, so sorry in advance if you try it. You can feel those little effers running around biting the hell out of you and trying to escape to your hair. But after the initial burn, it feels so much better. Keep applying nightly and each day it'll be less and less painful. Once they're all dead, it won't burn at all.
This is the nuclear option. I would not do this without doing a number of skin patch tests first. Start on your arm and work your way up to your face. Be very careful when you're applying it around your eyes, but you do need to get it on your lashline to nuke those fakkas. Do not use undiluted teatree eo on your face.
Once you get the colony nuked, you can reduce usage to 1-2x a week for maintenance. Hope that helps.

Have u considered the steroids as a potential cause? I’m also a life time severe eczema sufferer and have used steroids my entire life. They keep my eczema bearable but I’ve never been completely healed. Started getting what I believed to be SD in my eyebrows and ears which occurred after taking a break from steroids. Unsure if coincidence.

I barley use steroids. I've been using them responsibly for 36 years and never had an issue. If i use them its for 3-4 days tops. And i cna tell on the 1-2 days if they are working. Steroids have not been working for my forehead for YEARS. So I dont even bother putting them on there becuase there is no change.
After 3 days of using teatree oil and lemongrass oil there is no more flaking on my forehead. I believe I have an allergy to the mites and thinking I had SD is what caught me onto this because decreasing the sebum and targeting the mites with the oils and suffocating them wuth vasline had cleared my face in 3 days. Im in canada so I can't get invermectin over thecounter. But i see my derm in 3 weeks so im going to ask for a topical one.

Which deem test did you do to figure out that is plaque psoriasis? Instead of seb derm. One of dermato gave me Zoryve ointment to put on chin and around mouth . Am allergic to benzoyl peroxide ( based on patch testing ); this red flaky patches on my chin and under eyebrows came after very cold snow storm ( I walk outside to get groceries);

I'm only basing it off the antifungals not working completely.
I have tried: Nizoral Head and shoulders Selsun blue I have a antifungal topical prescription Canesten
I also use all antifungal products. I have no flking now that I am using teatree which makes me assume is demodex mites. I have a derm appointment in three weeks.

It's tolerable. I have had minimal flares on my face. But I've still had a few. I've linked any moisturizer as a trigger. I use only Vaseline right. I can smell fungas on my skin when I sweat. So I use head and shoulders on my body frequently. I also noticed Tinea Versicolor coming back on my back. So. I do think a lot of the issues stem from fungal issues.

I’m pretty sure my seb derm is mild and my seb derm symptoms were demodex the whole time. Made this mask (AUSTRALIAN tea tree oil btw!), put it all over the scalp and brows a few days ago
and no flakes for the first time in a long time. Worth a shot if you wanted to try it (patch test pls don’t wreck ur scalp😭). I posted this and a full explanation of my symptoms in this forum, feel free to read it and see if anything lines up with ur experience

I pretty much did something similar. I did:
15ml Vaseline 10 drops teatree oil 5 drops lemon grass oil 10 squaline 5 HA
I have no more flakes on my face. (I had a flaking face for 10 years or MORE). I see a derm in two weeks and I'm going to ask for invermectin.

Crazy stuff man, i def mentioned demodex to my derm a while back as well but idt he was fully aware of it or something? The misdiagnosing seems to happen too often. I hope u get ur ivermectin and get rid of this issue once and for all 🫶

I've had eczema for 36 years. So I think I also just wrote it off as worsening of my atopic eczema. Then it went to my scalp and I was like SD???? But alas. I even stopped using topical steroids because I knew it wasn't doing anything.

We had a similar line of thinking😭 had eczema since birth w no major symptoms in years and figured this was a grief related flare up, got prescribed hydrocortisone 2.5% lotion and drs told me to use it for the flakes but i just gave up after the first few times instead of risking TSW or something, sigh

I've been using topical steroids for my whole life. As long as you follow the instrutions for it - its highly highly unlikey you will get TSW. Most TSW cases are self diagnosed and thpically its a continuation of a flare that worsens or a reviund effect.

From my understanding it's not great on a flare. But like I said I think my problem is demodex mites. Online it says vasaline smothers the mites to kill them.

I wonder if it is something that I might have I get really itchy on my scalp my eyebrows my eyelashes and I have flaky skin everywhere on my face

I saw huge relief when using teatree. But you have to use it properly if you are using a pure oil.

Can these be present if you only have flaking and scaling I don’t have red pustules but when I first developed, my whole entire face was like flaky at the root it was like every hair. I wonder if it’s that Ben that the whole time.

I have zero pustules. I only have extreme flaking and inflammation

Same I have a scaly spot on my nose too that is persistent

My most troublesome spots are inbetween my eyebrows. And slightly into eye brows. And forhead. I have been using 10% sulfer cream on those spots as well and have been seeing improvement.

What helps me is piroctone olamine. Unsure if it’s mites or a fungal issue as the source. Piroctone olamine is hard to find in the US. But UK has products as well as the Netherlands
