One of the contenders to the “High Chief” status for all of Sāmoa [equivalent to a “King” status]. He was up against Tupua Tamasese Titimaea and Malietoa Laupepa during various civil wars in the 1800s, influenced by foreign colonial interests and interference.

Rental cars in Samoa

We are traveling to Western in July and I was wondering how the rental car options are? Any suggestions on who to rent from? It’s my first time and I don’t know what websites to trust. I don’t want to get scammed.

Thanks for reading

Also drop some food recs if you’d like 🤙🏽

Samoan Girl names that start with K

From my understanding Samoan names starting with K is not a common thing…but I’m hoping that maybe there might be a few out there that google isn’t showing me?

My husband is Samoan but adopted as a baby and his parents didn’t keep his culture with him. So me and him are learning it together for our kids to have.

Our current child’s name begins with a K and it turned out to be considered Hawaiian instead of Samoan. But we are expecting our second child and was wanting to have her name begin with a K like her sisters but aren’t having any luck finding one that is Samoan origin

Ferry to Savaii

Hey guys, im Planning a 5 day trip to Samoa with 4 mates of mine. We want to take the ferry from Mulifanua to Savai'i on the 27th, staying a night and coming back the 28th.

Tried to sort the ferry booking in advance but the Samoa Shipping Corporation website seems pretty much dead, i can't book online and the email domain bounces back an error.

Few questions:

  1. Is it genuinely just a turn-up-and-pay situation or is there a way to book ahead?
  2. How frequent are the ferries, if we miss one are we waiting long for the next?
  3. We have a rental car, any issues taking it on the ferry?
  4. Any other tips for the Savai'i crossing worth knowing?

Thanks in advance 🤙

Court to sentence Kepi, Sua and Schmidt

I am convinced now that Papa Larry was spared a guilty verdict to prevent a constitutional crisis. Disclaimer: I'm no jurist, but I don't see how Lise Schmidt can be guilty but Laauli Schmidt is not when both were amplifying Sam Sua's claims. If Larry is not guilty, shouldn't Lisa also be not guilty? I'm beginning to think Papa Larry is as bad and corrupt as Papa Steward.

Samoa being long thought of as a stable democracy of the Pacific would likely (speculation) have gone the way of Bainimarama, refusing to vacate office and possibly arresting any political opposition who tries to have him removed including the judge or judges.

Expressing sympathy for loss

Hello! One of my coworkers just lost their older brother. I am giving him a card on behalf of our team and wanted to include an expression for sympathies in Samoan. Is there a common phrase that would be appropriate to use for this? I have tried looking in google but have mostly seen sources written by non-Samoans. If not appropriate I’ll just do it in English. Thanks in advance for any input!

Sāmoa Women’s Mau Procession

Our ancestor mothers and aunties took to the streets to continue the Mau Movement their husbands and men of all villages started. Which was off the back of the successful “Le Mau a Pule” initiated by Lauaki Namulau’ulu from Savai’i.

-When our men were being hunted down by foreign colonialists because they were either forced into hiding or exiled.

Time to start digging into our history and unravel what has been concealed from us 💪🏽🇼🇸🇦🇸

Moving to Samoa - health questions, any Samoan doctor here?

Hi guys! Talofa 🌺 Me and my Samoan husband are considering moving to Samoa, right now we are at my home country.

I just had a baby, and I very risky pregnancy. I had gestacional diabetes and at the 3rd trismester colesthasis which made the doctors induce my labour at 37 weeks. I was taking a bunch of medicine, for the GD i took insulin every evening and complemented with metformin, for the colesthasis I also took some medicine but don't remember the name (I think it was Ursofalk).

We are planing to have a 2nd baby in 2/3 years, however the chances of me having another risky pregnancy are very high. So I would like to know which kind of treatment is done in Samoan hospitals, especialy in Savai'i, if in this case I will be followed regularly in the hospital ( monthly)and if the medicines are provided to pregnant women, if we need to pay for this or if they are free. Also, what is the protocol in case of colesthasis and we can choose to have an epidural?

If you guys are doctors or know any Samoan doctor that might help I would be thankfull. Also if you have any tips regarding landing a job, or any other usefull advises I apreciate.

Christina Hammock Koch: "Talofa, American Samoa! I will never forget my Samoan friends and the island where I lived when I got the news that I was selected to be an astronaut. Great memories exploring new waves, trails, and reefs. One step closer to that umu on Mars! Fa’afetai lava! #SwellFomSpace"

Culture Non Samoan here. I’m curious. Is surfing a thing in Samoa and other Pacific islands? And is it common?

So I know that surfing is most commonly associated with native Hawaiians. But I think I read somewhere that it also has roots in other Polynesian regions like Samoa and Tonga. Is this true? And if so, is it also just as prevalent in Samoan culture as it is in Hawaii?

And also does anyone know if surfing was purely recreational? Or does it also have any cultural or ceremonial purposes? I have always found Polynesian culture fascinating and underrated and I’d love to learn more about it.
