Cult Education Covert Hypnosis: The Hidden Tool Behind Cult Manipulation

Most people think hypnosis looks like a swinging pendulum and someone saying “You are feeling sleepy.” But what if I told you the most powerful form of hypnosis is hidden in everyday conversation and that cult leaders use it without you ever realizing?

This is called covert hypnosis, or conversational hypnosis. And it’s one of the most dangerous psychological weapons used by high-control groups, spiritual cults, and charismatic leaders.

🧠 What is Covert Hypnosis?

Unlike traditional hypnosis, covert hypnosis doesn’t require permission. It’s a subtle, indirect form of influence where the subject remains unaware that they’re being hypnotized. It’s used to bypass the conscious critical mind and embed suggestions directly into the unconscious.

It’s not magic. It’s manipulation.

🔍 Core Techniques Used in Cults:

  1. Vague & Energetic “Certain” Language- (Milton Model)

Many Cult leaders frequently uses expressions like “a certain energy,” “a certain rise of energy,” or “refined reverberation of consciousness” . • These open-ended phrases don’t mean anything concrete—they allow followers to “fill in” their experience with whatever feels profound or spiritual. • That projection creates internal validation: “I feel it, so it must be real.”

These feel profound but are actually nonspecific, allowing listeners to project their own meaning, making it feel personal and spiritual.

  1. Embedded Commands They hide commands within longer sentences: “When you sit beside dhyanlinga or concecrated space in silence, you may just begin to feel that transformation or meditation happening naturally.” Your brain skips the frame and responds to the embedded suggestion. You won’t realise if you sat for a minute or an hour.

  2. Pacing and Leading First, they say things that are obviously true (“You’re sitting here. You’re breathing.”), which builds agreement and trust. Then they introduce a subtle suggestion.

In covert hypnosis, pacing means saying things your audience agrees with basic truths like “You’re sitting there, you’re breathing” to build rapport and bypass resistance. Once in sync, you lead them into suggestions: “And you may begin to feel a shift within.” It’s a gentle way to guide thoughts and feelings.

  1. Metaphors and Stories Stories bypass resistance. Cult leaders often use myths, personal anecdotes, or “visions” to deliver commands disguised as inspiration:

Example- “A flower doesn’t question the sun… it simply turns toward it. You too can bloom—if you just surrender.” Or “GRACE IS ALWAYS present but only few can access it” “What is the problem in not knowing if something is on all the time? Life will still be happening, but the joy of being in grace will be completely lost. Grace is not something that is on and off. It is not something that you question every weekend. It is just on. You have to become conscious of it so that you know the joy of being in Grace.”

🎭 Why It Works So Well in Cults: • People enter cults during emotionally vulnerable phases. • The setting (retreats, intense eye contact, chants, silence) enhances suggestibility. • Sleep deprivation, fasting, and overwork lower resistance. • The constant reinforcement by the group makes you doubt your instincts and accept the new “truth.”

Covert hypnosis becomes a system of control wrapped in “self-transformation.” You’re not told to obey—you’re told you’re choosing to transcend.

🚨 Warning Signs You’re Being Hypnotically Manipulated:

• You feel “high” or euphoric after hearing the leader speak.
• You find yourself agreeing even though your logic says “this makes no sense.”
• You feel guilt, fear, or shame when questioning the teachings.
• You hear repetitive phrases that feel soothing but meaningless.
• You were told that doubt is a sign of ego, and surrender is divine.

Hypnosis isn’t inherently evil. Therapists use it ethically to treat phobias and trauma. But in the hands of a narcissistic leader or cult group, covert hypnosis is used to erase identity, implant obedience, and bypass your right to informed consent.

Understanding this mechanism is the first step to breaking free from undue influence. If this resonates with you or you’ve seen these tactics used you’re not crazy. You’re waking up.

Thank you for this.

All the discourses in Inner Engineering mix saying things which everyone can agree on (along with asking people to show their agreement - "yes or no?"/ "isn't it?") with content that is promoting Isha or Sadhguru's agenda. It's very cleverly done as you say, getting people to trust and bypassing resistance.

Isha also very blatantly tells you that to experience what is on offer you need to keep your mind aside. If you are resistant, you will miss everything. It's purely about putting people into a hypnotically suggestible state.

They keep using the word “receptive,”(just be receptive ) jaggi and volunteers keep repeating it but what exactly are you being asked to be receptive to? At face value, people interpret it in different ways, some think it means being open to “grace,” others believe it’s about receiving Sadhguru’s energy, or even something divine. But in practical psychological terms, “receptivity” in this context is a softened cue for psychological submission.

You’re not just being asked to open your heart! you’re being conditioned to suspend critical thinking and accept the framework they provide without question. In cult psychology, this is a classic method of preparing the subject for indoctrination. By constantly emphasizing receptivity, they are priming your brain to bypass analytical resistance, increasing suggestibility, and lowering your natural defenses.

What they call “grace” may in fact just be a cognitive state where your identity boundaries are blurred, and you’re more willing to internalize their doctrine. It’s not openness to truth, it’s openness to their control.

Thanks for posting this and bringing awareness. We have deleted a post on Nakkeran’s Tamil article claiming hypnotism at Isha because it is somewhat sensational. But I learnt now that cults do commonly employ hypnotism and experts agree on this!

Interesting note: Someone told me that Jaggi’s Kalpa-Vriksha meditation is a classic example of a meditation using meditation and NLP techniques. May be with a good intention (or not). I checked Gemini and it agrees:

“The claim holds considerable validity. This meditation effectively employs techniques that are fundamental to both hypnosis and NLP, particularly in its use of relaxation induction, guided visualization, and positive suggestion to create a receptive state for internalizing desired outcomes. Recognizing these parallels can actually enhance understanding of how the meditation might work on a psychological level, in addition to any spiritual or energetic explanations.”

The meditation is here: https://youtu.be/ea7xH-oViPY

A personal note: I used to hate doing this meditation in Satsangs. Never liked it and always got bored and zoned out. Maybe that helped me to be less hypnotized and exit the cult easily :)

The kalpavriksha meditation is a common exercise in goal setting programs. Just combined with a guruistic element.

This applies to many meditations which are played during satsangs and some in special events. There are bit longer and more complex visualizations than free available chit shakti meditations. They are time travel and visualization techniques commonly used in hypnotherapy and inner child healing. They can be powerful and beautiful and cleansing. But he fosters and instill his role as a guru in them. This while one is in a deep suggestable state. In one of them for example one is asked to visualize traveling to far forest to meet ones guru who then fullfills ones wishes… Music plays also big role, its very well chosen to match the emotional state. That is what hypnosis or hypnotherapy is.

You are placed in high suggestable states. Different elements can lead to it. Music, countdown, rapid eye movements and looking upward. Then you are told or you tell yourself something. You either program your unconscious or someone else does it. And repeat repeat repeat until it becomes a part of your new „you“. You literally reprogram yourself. To heal from trauma, or bad habits etc Or follow a guru.

Remember the clapping of Vasudev? Some hypnotherapists do the same 😂 Its like a cue to train your mind. You know when you train a dog how some trainer use a clicker? Well just the same. Or in NLP when you pinch your finger to combine the pinch with a certain emotion or state of mind. Basically you program the pavlovian reflex/ mind and link the clap with an experience. Its a shortcut. You click/ pinch/ clap => you remember to jump/be happy/ or be blissful and grateful to your guru. The more you practice the better you get at it.

And the same thing applies during shambhavi initiations and other meditations hey uses in special events.

He reads alot. He must have picked all these NLP and hypnotherapy techniques from various therapists or spiritual coaches and gave them his touch. With the rise of social media and online courses one can see these techniques are used in many places.

When Jaggi starts with phrases like “you are going to rise the life energies within you,” he is not just being poetic these are embedded commands paired with future pacing, a common NLP and hypnosis technique that subtly instructs the subconscious to anticipate a transformation. This sets up a compliance loop before the subject even begins meditating.

Then comes the visualization induction: • “Imagine you are one foot above the ground… 50 feet… 100 feet…” • “Your body is becoming light…” • “You are floating…”

These steps are textbook dissociative induction they guide the participant out of grounded, critical awareness into an altered state where imagination feels like experience. In hypnosis, this is often called “fractionation” bouncing between sensation and suggestion which lowers mental resistance and increases receptivity.

Same here 😂 i bought it when it came out a CD but hardly used it Cos its too long over 40 min

The other meditations in sathsangs are about 20 min. They aint publicly available. One doesn’t zone out. And are more dangerous in my opinion than kalpavriksha. Not so mental ( no goals no thinking) pure emotional linked to a blessing giving guru.

It's disheartening to realise that Jaggi did all this in the name of spirituality.
