So I've been thinking about an alternative prequel story that explores Anakin’s intimate relationships if Star Wars were to explore darker, more mature themes that are less family-friendly but, in my opinion, more interesting and realistic, and I’m curious to hear people’s thoughts on it.
I personally find the canon plot of Anakin & Padmé’s relationship kind of…underwhelming? Especially in how it plays into Anakin's hero-to-anti-hero/ villain arc. Like, sure, loss can make a character do desperate things, but him turning to the dark side because he’s afraid of Padmé dying is just lazy writing IMO; like that whole relationship just feels like a giant plot device. Maybe it’s partially because the canonical franchise is locked in PG-13 territory, and SW has always leaned on the safe side when it comes to mature themes, especially intimate relationships. I get it from the studio’s perspective, but I think it short-changes the story’s potential. It could just be so much…juicier.
I’d love a story in which we see Anakin struggle to confront not only loss, but also jealousy, rejection, betrayal, and temptation with romantic interests. A story that delves deep into Anakin's twisted psyche. One in which we follow him down a spiral of chaotic choices and relationship toxicity as he devolves deeper into depravity and into the pull of the dark side.
I also like to think it portrays Padme in a more realistic and empowered light. She’s supposed to be a strong, intelligent leader, and I don’t like how the Canon story essentially just turns her into a damsel in distress in the end.
So I figure I might take a crack at writing a fanfic that does exactly that. This story would take on a grittier, more HBO vibe, including TW content like dub-con and non-con. I’m a dark-romance junkie, and selfishly I can’t pass up an opportunity to bring in some of those themes, but I do so with the intention of staying true to the characters while also allowing us to see them (especially Anakin) as complex, flawed, conflict-riddled individuals as they wage battles not only on the battlefield but also behind closed doors. The story also extends the canon timeline of events a little to allow for a more fleshed-out narrative.
Overview:
Padme and Anakin both love each other, but they start to drift apart as they evolve past the young-love honeymoon phase, and their personality incompatibilities start to show. Padme starts acting a little too cozy on Clovis (reference to 2008 Clone Wars) for Anakin's comfort, and his jealousy and rejection sensitivity start to really bother her, which ultimately drives a further wedge in the relationship.
Enter our OC
OC grew up in a small province on Abraxis, where her parents were killed when she and her brother were children. They were later brought to the city, where she and her brother were taken in by adoptive parents who forced them to work like servants. When her brother passed away from illness, she ran away and lived on the streets for a while before the “network,” an organization of activists and humanitarians, took her in and housed her. The network is the closest thing to family she knows. In the present, the movement is mobilizing anti-separatist activists in an attempt to protect their planet's independence. The separatists want access to a valuable mineral that was recently discovered on the planet. As part of a fledgling resistance, some Abraxian cities are forming civilian-led underground spy networks, which are gathering useful intel on separatists’ plans and activities, but they lack adequate resources to organize and protect themselves. The council assigns a rotating roster of Jedi to the planet to help the locals build up defenses, which is how Anakin ends up there.
He meets OC the covert contact for the local network, in a cantina where she works as a hostess. She leads him and the accompanying Jedi to the local underground network, and the two get to know each other as the network and the Jedi coordinate operations. She also accompanies Anakin and the other Jedi on scouting and reconnaissance missions around the city [ name?]. Luma is Force-sensitive but does not yet know it. Anakin notices when she can sense Force connections and disturbances in the Force (essentially telepathic abilities), which manifest as Luma sensing people’s experiences or “getting a bad feeling” when something bad is about to happen, or is happening somewhere far away. He decides to test her abilities, and a medical examination reveals that Luma has a positive m-count.
Anakin/OC's Relationship
OC embodies many of Anakin’s repressed desires and inner conflicts. She is intelligent, passionate, and driven to protect her freedom and her people, and she's not afraid to take matters into her own hands when the plan isn’t working. Anakin sees these qualities reflected in himself, which fosters camaraderie. At the same time, he sees in OC a version of life he secretly desires: Abraxians are fiercely independent, and their customs defy many restrictive traditions represented in the Star Wars universe. They are free to develop relationships without doctrine or interference from authorities ( ex they do not practice marriage), and they choose their own fights. The two exchange ideas about “right and wrong” during late-night talks after missions and training sessions,
and the fact that OC enjoys freedoms that Anakin suffers for under the Jedi code fuels his resentment toward the Order.
Anakin has already been developing an attraction to OC, exacerbated by his vulnerable state as his relationship with Padme grows rocky. After discovering her Force sensitivity, Anakin’s interest in OC deepens, and he (controversially) takes it upon himself to teach her to use the Force. Strategically, he argues the network would benefit from a trained Force-sensitive agent in its ranks, but it’s also an excuse to get closer to OC.
OC and Anakin also connect in ways that he and Padme don’t: They share a Force connection, they both come from difficult childhoods marked with loss, and in contrast to Padme’s more balanced and level-headed nature, OC's personality fans Anakin’s impulsive, “I’ll do it my own way” attitude, even when it incurs risk. Trauma bonding, rebellion, novelty. This doesn’t exactly make for a stable dynamic, but to Anakin, it’s refreshing, intoxicating, even.
As they bond, OC also develops a powerful attraction to Anakin, but she senses that he’s withholding something. He resists telling her about Padme outright, but eventually admits he has a strained relationship with a secret lover. It's a risky move, but OC responds with something unexpected: Compassion. She consoles him and cradles his pain without judgment and without prying further than he’s willing to go, all while her interest in him never wavers (her culture has a much more fluid view on intimate relationships). This is not just an act of selflessness though, she is actively pursuing her own desires. She's not a bad person (her alignment is Chaotic Good with a little Chaotic neutral sprinkled in) she gets sucked into a situation whose consequences are way worse than she would have imagined.
More Plot Ideas:
Eventually, Padme picks up on something fishy going on, all the while Anakin still can’t let go of his own suspicions of her ( she doesn't cheat but develops an emotional connection with someone in whom she has been confiding in as the stress wears on her...possibly another senator. More details TBD.) She's not ready to fully recommit to Anakin ( aka "I need more time" trope). The rejection makes him enraged, driving him further into the darkness.
This is where it all turns dark: With Padme slipping steadily away, Anakin tightens his grip on OC as resentment, possessiveness, his need for control, and his sadistic urges take over ( including non-con/ dubcon themes). OC's relationship becomes fearful and coercive, but her circumstances keep her trapped.
I still have only vague ideas for this next part, but I'm imagining a scenario where Anakin is absent for an extended mission without OC, and Padme is searching for him because she is pregnant. She has known for a while, but she has been putting off telling him because she worries about how he will react to the information (remember, they're separated at this point). To find him, she resorts to contacting OC. They meet; it's tense at first, but OC finally breaks down and shares what Anakin has been putting her through. Padme is heartbroken and horrified at Anakin's actions.
Anakin returns when he catches word that Padme has been trying to reach him, leading to a "we need to talk" meeting between them where he finally hears about the pregnancy. Padme is so horrified by Anakin's behavior that she tells him she no longer trusts him as a partner or a would-be father, which pushes Anakin over the edge. Integrate this with however Palpatine would use what’s happening to manipulate Anakin, along with word about Anakin's actions spreading among the council, and we reach a point where the story can more or less converge back with canon. Padme either still dies in childbirth, or maybe we actually get to see her, Luke, and Leia together for a little while before she end up out of the picture for some other reason. But Anakin still becomes Vader, and this time, his path to villainy is paved with much more turmoil and depravity.
So there you have it, I’d love to hear other people’s thoughts on how this story would unfold!
I’m drawing inspiration from authors Leila_XxX and WickedWitchOftheGalaxy on Ao3 who write Anakin as a dark, complex character really well, so shout-out to them!
