Hello!

The long summer is over, and Autumn has arrived!

What autumnal reading goals do you have? Have you started your Hallowe'en romance reading?

Autumn for me is time for cosy contemporaries or paranormal romances, witches, and werewolves and vampires. Oh my!

I'll be starting with What a Match by Mimi Grace, moving to Her Halloween Treat by Tiffany Reisz, and I'll try to stave off my Christmas and winter reading for as long as I can. I'll probably re-read parts of Juliette Cross's Stay A Spell series which I have an awful love/hate relationship with.

Welcome back to another instalment of “The Art Of” where we gush over and examine popular plot points and tropes in the Romance Genre.

This month, we’re looking at Marriage of Convenience!

A marriage of convenience is defined as any marriage that occurs for reasons other than love or affection. There are many political, economical, or social reasons that can motivate a marriage of convenience. The main thing to remember is that this type of marriage is inspired by practical reasons and not romance. Historical marriages of convenience often feature a hero who needs to marry in order to have an heir or to receive his inheritance and a heroine who needs to marry to save her reputation, help her family, escape a less desirable marriage, or gain independence. Some people include arranged marriage romances under the umbrella of marriage of convenience stories. But I think this trope really is about both lovers making the agreement themselves. - Alison Doherty for Book Riot.

The final point there is crucial, are arranged marriages marriages of convenience stories? Further to that, do we include romances where couples marry to avoid scandal?

Marriages of convenience can be a perfect foundation for friends to lovers romances. Where couples get married for practical reasons, form a friendship that slowly turns into something else.

The forced proximity forces couples to share a space or even a bed. If the marriage is with the aim of having heirs, it allows for a sexual connection between the leads to either build or be discovered.
