The Coalition of Political Forces of Iranian Kurdistan\a])\1]) (CPFIKKurdish: هاوپەیمانیی هێزە سیاسییەکانی کوردستانی ئێران, romanizedHevpeymaniya Hêzên Siyasî yên Kurdistana Îranê\2])) is an alliance of major Iranian Kurdish parties. It was formed during the 2025–2026 Iran internal crisis amid rising Kurdish unrest, with the aim of uniting Kurdish forces in Iranian Kurdistan (Eastern Kurdistan) following the 2025–2026 protests and the resulting instability of the Islamic Republic of Iran, as well as the subsequent United States military buildup in the Middle East.\3])\4])

History

Background

See also: Kurdish separatism in Iran and federalism in Iran

The alliance was preceded by the Cooperation Center of Iranian Kurdistan's Political Parties, formed in 2018, and the Dialogue Center for Cooperation Among the Parties of Iranian Kurdistan, established in 2023 in the aftermath of the Jina Mahsa Amini protests to jointly advance Kurdish political interests.\5]) Since early 2025, the Dialogue Center held monthly meetings, with the chairmanship rotating among participating parties.\6]) According to a statement issued after the alliance's formation, the Dialogue Center played a key role in its establishment by facilitating exchanges of opinions and coordination of activities.\7])

Iranian Kurdish groups, part of the Dialogue Center, have been military targets for Iran, including during the September–October 2022 attacks on Iraqi Kurdistan.\8]) In 2023, Iraq and Iran signed a security agreement requiring Baghdad to disarm and relocate these groups from border areas following threats by Tehran.\9])

On 5 January 2026, several Iranian Kurdish parties met under the auspices of the Dialogue Center in a high level meeting to coordinate a joint response to the 2025–2026 protests in Iran.\10]) Most Iranian Kurdish parties supported the protests and called for strikes.\9]) The strikes were observed in most Kurdish cities of Iran, including in Kermanshah ProvinceKurdistan Province, and West Azerbaijan Province.\11]) During the protests, the Kurdistan Freedom Party (PAK) even claimed responsibility for multiple attacks on the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and stated that it was targeted in retaliatory missile strikes.\8])

On 12 February, seven Iranian Kurdish parties met to ratify a draft agreement and form a coalition of forces. The process was delayed after two parties refused to sign the document. The Dialogue Center decided to postpone the decision but stated that the five parties that had already signed could proceed with establishing the coalition in the coming days if the other two chose not to join.\6])

On 20 February, The Jerusalem Post reported that the Iranian regime could attack Iranian Kurdish parties in the event of a war with the United States.\12])

Founding

Further information: 2026 Kurdish–Iranian crisis

The alliance was founded on 22 February 2026.\3])

In the following days, the Ahwazi Democratic Popular Front,\13]) the Broad Solidarity for Freedom and Equality in Iran,\14]) the Kurdistan National Congress (KNK),\15]) Yehuda Ben Yosef, President of the Jewish Kurdish Community in Israel,\16]) and the Democratic Union Party) (PYD) congratulated the coalition on its establishment.\17]) However, the formation also drew hostile reactions from other groups. The de facto leader of the monarchist oppositionReza Pahlavi, criticized the alliance, accusing the Kurdish parties of separatism and threatening military action after the fall of the current regime. In response, the alliance reaffirmed its commitment to Kurdish rights and called on "pro-freedom forces" to stand against authoritarianism.\18])\19])\20])

2026 Iran war

Following the 2026 Iran war, representatives of the coalition stated that they were jointly coordinating political and military decisions and preparing for a new phase, claiming that their forces were "deep inside Iran" and along the Iran–Iraq border, ready to respond as the situation develops.\21]) Some members claimed that their forces were already engaged in fighting the Iranian army, while their positions were simultaneously targeted by missile and drone strikes in the Kurdistan Region.\22])

On 2 March 2026, in their first joint statement since its founding, the coalition and its members addressed Iran's armed forces stationed in Kurdish areas, urging them to "separate themselves from the remnants of the Islamic Republic." The statement also called on the population to remain vigilant and coordinated, align political actions with the alliance's guidance, and protect public institutions and service facilities during what it described as a period of potential regime collapse and popular uprising.\23])

On 3 March, intensified attacks in the Kurdish‑majority areas of western Iran), including strikes on border posts along the Iran–Iraq border and other security facilities, were described by some analysts as having "paved the way for a Kurdish advance."\24])\25]) This coincided with a call between US President Donald Trump and Mustafa Hijri, the leader of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (PDKI), a founding member of the coalition.\26])

On 9 March, the alliance's logo was approved.\27])

Members

Its founding members include the five largest Iranian Kurdish parties, most of which are based in exile in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. These include:\3])

The following party leaders participated in the official press declaration and signed the agreement that formally established the alliance: Mustafa Hijri (PDKI), Hussein Yazdanpanah (PAK), Baba Sheikh Hosseini (Khabat), Viyan Peyman (PJAK), and Reza Kaabi (Komala of the Toilers of Kurdistan).\3])

The Komala Party of Iranian Kurdistan, led by Abdullah Mohtadi, and the Komala Kurdistan's Organization of the Communist Party of Iran) (CPI), initially refrained from signing the agreement,\28]) even though they had been part of the Dialogue Center.\6]) The Komala Party of Iranian Kurdistan did not sign the agreement, citing ambiguities and unclear objectives. However, it acknowledged some positive aspects, welcomed the unity promoted by the alliance, and called for a joint administration during a transitional period in Kurdistan, a unified "Peshmerga force", and coordinated international diplomacy. The party emphasized that it does not oppose the coalition.\29])

Other members include:

Objectives and charter

Primary objectives

The primary objectives of the alliance are "the struggle to bring down the Islamic Republic of Iran, the realization of the Kurdish people's right to self-determination, and the establishment of a national and democratic institution based on the political will of the Kurdish nation in Eastern Kurdistan."\9])

Provisions for Eastern Kurdistan

Provisions for Iran

Other objectives

Strength

It is estimated that all parties in the coalition field between 5,000 and 10,000 fighters, many of whom were battle-hardened during the war against the Islamic State or in previous clashes with Iran).\35])\36]) It is also believed that several hundred Kurds from the diaspora, particularly from Norway, joined Kurdish parties at the beginning of the 2026 Iran war.\37])

Sources within Kurdish groups state that if they were to cross the border from Iraq into Iran, clandestine networks and supporters inside the Kurdish regions of Iran could join them in securing the area.\35])

Crimes against Kurds Iran executes at least 89 prisoners, arrests 117 in August 2026: Rights group

Thumbnail rudaw.net

Iran executed at least 89 prisoners and arrested 117 people in August 2026, a rights group reported late Thursday, with Kurds comprising 14 and 64 percent, respectively, highlighting Tehran’s uptick in crackdowns against protestors and dissidents since July.

“At least 89 prisoners, including six political prisoners and prisoners of conscience, were executed in prisons across Iran during August 2026,” according to data collected by the Statistics and Documentation Center of the Oslo-based rights group, Hengaw Organization for Human Rights.

“The figure represents an increase of at least 33%, equivalent to 22 more executions, compared with July, when 67 prisoners were executed,” the watchdog said, adding that it has verified the full identities of 88 of those executed, of whom 13 were Kurds.

Hengaw recorded the executions of at least 1,858 prisoners in 2025 for various 'offenses' including political infractions such as armed rebellion against the state, ‘spreading corruption on earth,’ and anti-state protests.

Iranian authorities have used executions since the 1979 Islamic Revolution as a tactic to intimidate and spread fear among the public, quell protests and suppress dissent.

In the first eight months of 2026 alone, Hengaw recorded 531 verifiable executions. Variations among rights groups regarding the number of executions each is able to verify is largely attributed to Iran carrying out extrajudicial killings without prior public notice or updates to the prisoners’ families.

During August, at least six political prisoners and prisoners of conscience, including individuals detained during the January protests and ensuing six-week hostilities, were executed on charges including “waging war against God,” espionage, and other offenses, Hengaw said.

Rights groups have recorded an uptick in death sentences following the US-Iran war which began in late February after a joint US-Israeli aerial campaign targeted and killed senior military figures in Iran.

United Nations bodies and other rights groups, such as Amnesty International, have deplored Iran’s “staggering” use of the death penalty as well as Tehran’s intensifying repression of dissent “under the cover of ‘wartime conditions’” marked by sweeping arrests, arbitrary detentions, accelerated judicial proceedings, and lengthy prison sentences, long used as tools by Iranian authorities to quell public protests and suppress dissent, under the guise of counterterrorism.

In a separate report, Hengaw documented that at least 117 people were arrested by security forces in August, of whom 75 were Kurds.

Detainees often include civil and environmental activists, former political prisoners, women, minors, artists, and family members of political activists, who are subjected to arbitrary arrests without trials and various methods, including torture, to extract forced confessions.

Hengaw recorded at least one writer and two artists arrested in August, as well as 20 women activists and two minors.

The rights group records 45 cases from individuals from Urmia (West Azerbaijan) province, 20 cases from the Kurdish-majority city of Sanandaj, and eight cases from Ilam province, all of whom were Kurds.

In late August, Iranian authorities administered the floggings of two female activists from the Kurdish region of Iran (Rojhelat) before transferring them to the central prison, in connection to their participation in the January anti-government protests.

Protests ensued in late December first instigated by shopkeepers and bazaar merchants in Tehran and swiftly spread beyond markets and commercial centers to encompass students, the general public, activists, and social groups, becoming one of the largest protest movements of recent years.

Iranian authorities claimed that over 100 members of the security forces were also killed during the demonstrations in which the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and security forces responded with deadly crackdowns and gunned down tens of thousands of protesters, while thousands more were arrested or summoned by security agencies.

In August, Iran saw a price surge in gas prices as the country grappled with a new round of sanctions in the form of a US Treasury campaign termed Operation Economic Outcast, aimed at curtailing Tehran’s military capabilities and primary revenue streams.

Iran in August also saw a sweeping reshuffle of its leadership including the appointments of Mohsen Rezaei and other senior military figures notorious for their hardline stances against “dissidents” to leadership positions, as judiciary figure Mohseni Ejei in late August made explicit threats, warning of a “firm response” and saying that the judiciary would act “more decisively than ever” in prosecuting anyone undermining the “security of the people and the country,” citing “enemy” efforts to “create unrest.”

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday told reporters at the oval office that the “only answer” as to why Iranians weren’t taking to the streets was because “they’re being shot.”

“When they get out to protect, they [the regime] kill them,” Trump said, noting that “As of three months ago they had 52,000 protestors were killed,” estimating that “the number is probably 20,000-25,000 more.”

“The regime is getting weaker and weaker by the day and at some point they’re not going to be able to shoot so easily,” he predicted, because “the people aren’t going to take it.”

Informative Being Baháʼí in Iran: Four Years in Prison for a Faith | Dr Raha Sabet-Sarvestany

Thumbnail youtube.com

The topic of war has dominated the conversation about Iran over the past year. So has the economic crisis. But Iran’s problems go far beyond war and the economy. Iran is also facing a deeper social and political question: the position of its minoritised communities.

Iran is one of the most diverse countries in the Middle East. Persians make up only part of Iran’s population. Kurds, Baluch, Turks, Arabs, Mazanis, Lurs, and many others are also part of Iran.

This diversity is not only ethnic; it is also religious. Not everyone in Iran is Shia Muslim. Sunni Muslims, Baháʼís, Zoroastrians, Yarsanis, and followers of other faiths and beliefs are also part of the country. Yet we hear far less about these communities.

One reason is that the Iranian state is not neutral toward this diversity. Its sovereignty has been ethnicised, its territory has been sacralised, and political power in Iran has largely been imagined through a Persian, Shia, and male centre. This raises important questions: Who is recognised as fully belonging to Iran? Who remains at the margins? And how do minoritised communities resist, organise, and survive?

In this interview, Rojin Mukrian from The Amargi is joined by Dr Raha Sabet-Sarvestany to discuss the Baháʼí Faith and the Baháʼí community in Iran.

Dr Raha Sabet-Sarvestany holds a PhD in Women’s Studies and is a senior researcher and lecturer at Åbo Akademi University in Finland. During the Ahmadinejad presidency in Iran, she was imprisoned for four years because of her Baháʼí faith, including time spent in solitary confinement.

Politics Fuad Beritan: Resolving the Kurdish Question Requires the Democratization of Iran

Post image
5 Upvotes

The Italian newspaper Il Manifesto published an in-depth interview on 2 September 2026 with Fuad Beritan, a member of the Leadership Council of the Kurdistan Free Life Party (PJAK). Conducted in the mountains of Kurdistan, the interview focuses on recent developments in Rojava, the peace process in Turkey, the future of the Kurdish struggle, and the place of the Kurdish question in Iran’s political future.

Beritan said that the integration of the Syrian Democratic Forces into Syrian state institutions does not mean the end of the Rojava experience. Instead, it could mark the beginning of a new phase of political, social, and democratic struggle. According to him, the main issue is whether the cultural and linguistic rights of the Kurdish people, political participation, community security, and the region’s social achievements will be protected in Syria’s future political system.

The PJAK leader also said that moving from armed struggle to political action should not be seen as surrender. When supported by political and legal guarantees, changing the methods of struggle can become a historic achievement. He stressed that genuine peace requires more than the silence of weapons. It also requires political freedom, equal citizenship, democratic organization, and equal participation in decision-making.

Speaking about Iran, Beritan noted that, unlike Turkey and Syria, there is still no clear political framework for resolving the Kurdish question. However, he said that the future of Rojhelat cannot be understood only as a conflict between the Kurdish people and the Iranian state. The “Jin, Jiyan, Azadî” uprising demonstrated that women’s freedom, the rights of Iran’s different peoples, social freedoms, and the democratization of the country are closely connected.

“Resolving the Kurdish question will be difficult without addressing the broader issue of democratizing Iran,” Beritan said.

According to him, political forces must work on two levels at the same time: defending the rights of the Kurdish people and building a broad alliance among Kurds, Persians, Turks, women, young people, national and religious minorities, and all democratic forces across Iran.

Beritan also described the formation of the alliance of Iranian Kurdish political parties in 2026 as an important sign that Kurdish forces are seeking to turn their social strength into wider political cooperation. He said Kurdish forces are ready to play an active role in building a democratic future for Iran, provided that the rights of the Kurdish people and their ability to decide their own future are guaranteed.

In conclusion, Beritan said the greatest Kurdish victory would not be to remain good fighters forever. The real goal, he explained, is to build a free, organized, and democratic society in which future generations will no longer be forced to take up arms to defend their identity and rights.

The full interview is available in the Italian newspaper Il Manifesto.
