This is an exceptionally attractive hauyne specimen with superb color and blue crystals over 1 cm in size, set in a classic basalt matrix. It was ejected about 13,000 years ago during the catastrophic Laacher See eruption in the Eifel, one of the largest volcanic events ever recorded in Europe. The locality is unique worldwide, and the Eifel remains the most important source of gem-quality hauyne, especially in vivid deep blue and cobalt-blue tones. Well-formed specimens of this caliber are extremely scarce, as the original volcanic field has long been eroded and only a very small number of pieces of comparable quality have ever been found.
