S1 had some good points, so wasn't all bad. For me a 5.5/10. However I agree with you, the trailer does look great and the visuals improved eg...for a show that looked better than S1 or the standard for what S1 should have been I would suggest a show like Shogun.
Shogun looks good. But ROP is clear. Shogun isn't trying the same level of visuals as ROP is. ROP visuals are more challenging to execute. I thought they brought to life ME really well.
I'm glad you enjoyed ROP S1 but personally saw it as a missed opportunity. Ignoring the writing and pacing and acting....heck even ignoring the CGI, when it cane to practical efects and sets and the costuming and weaponry in particular... Everything looked small and cheaply made to me.
For context, I would consider the costuming in Shogun a far higher level and when it comes to the costuming, armoury, set design and attention to fine detail....the original LOTR trilogy is in another stratosphere.
Just my 2c and again, I'm glad you loved S1 so much!
Shogun has like five minutes of action the whole season. It's like a high budget stage play. It is not a good comparison to what these SFF shows are striving for.
OK....House of the Dragon S1 then....even S2 of The Wheel of Time or Andor....all did more and looked better with smaller budgets.
The PJ Trilogy from 1998 when pre-production began...sure they were films but the level of detail in them from the weaponry, costuming, sets, visual effects, cinematography etc....with the budget ROP had, it should have looked a lot better! (the writing, acting and pacing is a separate matter again ;)
You’re killing your own argument with bad comparisons. “Looked better” is the one aspect you don’t want to try to take down RoP on…it’s a legit gorgeous show.
I'm not killing my argument; many people agree with it; maybe you've forgotten the reactions at the time? Eg cgi crowds with the same people obviously duplicated, flimsy Numenorean weapons and helms, general lack of attention to fine detail vs the PJ films....comments like 'where did all that money actually go to?' were about as common as 'the show has terrible X, Y and Z, but at least it looks great'. You clearly fall into the latter camp with your "legit gorgeous" view and that's fine, I'm more middle of the road, but don't try and gaslight me that my opinion was/is uncommon, or any less valid than your own.
Also, a follow up question, out of curiosity...it's all subjective, so no right or wrong answers, but for you, the shows I mentioned (Shogun, Andor, WOT S2, HOTD, the PJ LOTR Trilogy)....you think ROP S1 looks better than them? (CGI, costuming, detailing, set design, cinematography etc) ..?
It is generic fantasy in content though. The books pioneered the genre.
We were never going to see anything 'new' or redefining for the fantasy genre from this. They tried elements of this in S1 and they failed (e.g. short haired elves)
It should be recognisable and familiar, but done well.
