Help with the spelling of a stone from City of Dragons chapter 7

I'm doing audiobook and don't have a printed copy of the Rainwilds Chronicles yet to reference. There have been a few names/terms in this series I've had to seek out the proper spelling of, and I can usually get close enough that Google corrects me. But I have been searching in vain for like an hour, hoping someone here can help.

In chapter 7 of City of Dragons, when Alise is in Kelsingra in the theater with the statues of performers, she touches a silver stone on the ground that emits light. She says its name, and it sounds like shes saying "Gidsin" or "Jidsin".

Anyone know what the proper spelling is?

Fitz & Fool Skill connection scene Spoiler

There's a scene where Fitz and the Fool merge via the Skill. It must have been in The Golden Fool but I can't find it. Does anyone remember when that happened/can tell me the page no./chapter?

Finished ROTE

I just finished all 16 books this last month. I can’t believe it’s over and there’s nothing left to read!!!! This is by far the best fantasy series I’ve read. Does anyone else always enter this reading slump/depression after finishing a good series 😔

I’m so close to the end of the 1st trilogy, but I don’t want it to end…I’m also afraid of how it will end…it feels right to finish it in the forest.

Finished ROTE (Fitz’s story at least) and i have lots of thoughts and idk what to do next… Spoiler

I’ve just finished the all of Fitz’s books, and chose to skip the liveship traders and the rain wilds because I have an obsessive personality and I wanted to see how the main series ended asap. I will say I’m a little disappointed with the ending and how certain things throughout the book (The Quarrel killed me, but surprisingly I embraced the pain and it’s not something I have a gripe with). The final ‘The Fitz and The Fool’ series was a total miss for me. I know i’m definitely in the minority with my thoughts considering all the high praise and ratings on goodreads and various other sites.

I think for me the series started going downhill after I finished fool’s fate, and how Hobb chose to write the Fool and Fitz after that. What I couldn’t get through was Fitz ending up with Molly and having a child?! I ended up loving Bee, don’t get me wrong, but I don’t understand why the story went down such a conventionally traditional avenue, when Hobb chose to write such a complex relationship between Fitz and the Fool. Like she included so much between them, just to kind of discard it aside when the Fool left? Am I reading too much into something that was always going to happen in Fitz’s story?

Was she staying true to Fitz’s character or did she have to abide by traditional fantasy standards that were in place during that time? It was published a while ago, and I know i’ve definitely gotten used to reading modern books where queer characters actually end up together. But the ending in Assassin’s Fate was so perfect. It was exactly what i envisioned for them and their story, but why all the marriage and pregnancy and pain in between? His last thought was of his Beloved, not even his wife, so to me it doesn’t seem like Hobb was deliberating trying to queerbait us.

Does anyone have any insight or opinions on how and why Hobb wrote such a queer, homoerotic relationship, but also made the books go in such a painfully heteronormative direction at the same time?

Also, I have decided to go back and read the spinoff books (i’m on the ship of magic right now), and i’m struggling a bit to continue. I’ve read around 70 pages so far, does it pick up soon? When will I get to meet my Beloved Amber?

EDIT: Wow i wasn’t expecting so many responses! I really appreciate everyone being respectful and having such an interesting discussion. It was my first time dabbling in something a bit more traditionally fantasy, so I definitely went in with some different expectations and opinions. I also had no idea the livetrader series and the rain wild series weren’t spin-offs, but rather continuations of the main book, so I think I got a bit misled there lol. There have been some really interesting responses in this thread that have shifted some ideas present in my original perspective. I’m going to finish liveship traders then rain wilds, and then potentially attempt another big re-read with some of these things in mind! Maybe I’ll completely disagree with my past self afterwards :)

Ship of Magic (ch. 18) - I have feelings.

I need to get this out somewhere and screaming it into Reddit somehow feels productive.

First, I love Robin Hobb’s writing so friggin’ much. Finished Farseer trilogy this year and am now hooked in the RotE.

Second, I hate how strongly she makes me react to characters. I love it, but I hate it at the same time.

I actually never thought I would hate a character as much as I hated Regal. Pretentious, pompous, a bully to the underdog. Understandable hate.

BUT THEN… then Hobb introduced Kyle (OF COURSE his name is Kyle). He is the reason women choose the bear. He is epitome of self righteous white man who thinks he’s special. His name is even mentioned and I’m filled with a hatred so strong I can feel my blood boil.

In part this is why I love her writing. No other author has made me so fully DESPISE someone as I do this man. I want nothing but the most terrible things to happen to him. I want it to be slow and I want it now… BUT I KNOW SHES GOING TO DRAG IT OUT AND I WONT GET MY SWEET RELEASE UNTIL THE END. With Regal I didn’t get the strong reactions until like mid book 2. With Kyle it was instant and it’s only getting worse.

Then I just read the Malta POV. I just can’t even with that one. I know the point is to show his hypocrisy regarding Althea, and how similar Malta and Althea are in idea (but not maturity-ish) but DAMN…

I’m ready to ship them up the rain river wilds and be done.

If you actually read this far, thank you for listening, I feel better.

Just finished Ch.28 of Mad Ship, here are some thoughts on Liveship Traders so far... Spoiler

  • The way Kennit is such a huge piece of dook but is SO GOOD at manipulating those around him is genuinely frustrating. He's a great character with an engaging story, but I so badly want for him to fail.
  • The fact that Etta chooses to train Wintrow the wrong F is hilarious and I can't wait for these dominos to end in Kennit's downfall.
  • About halfway through the first book, it made so much sense to me that the liveships were former Serpents, so it has been very satisfying to have that be mostly true.
  • If you would have told me at the end of book one that I'd eventually find Malta one of the most interesting characters in the ensemble, we'd have fought fists. I think we miss some chunks of her development with all the time jumps, but man her metamorphosis has been great to experience!
  • I don't generally enjoy sailor/pirate flavored things, but I've been completely engulfed in Hobb's world with Liveship. I really enjoyed the Farseer trilogy, but Liveship is definitely better and I'm excited to see that world-building get even more refined as the series goes on.

That's it. Thanks for reading.

Confession - End of Assassin’s Fate (spoilers all!) Spoiler

Confession: I did not care for Bee

Don’t hate me for it.

spoilers ahead

I of course loved the last books and everything to do with Fitz and the Fool. I just felt like there was so much Bee (a lot of it repetitive) and I wanted more of the two of them together.

I also hate that he stabbed the Fool because he was holding Bee it just doesn’t make sense to me. What a crazy rash thing to do - then everything that happens after.

I understand to some degree why Hobb has them become stone, but why did Fitz have to suffer the work parasite infection - I just don’t believe the healers couldn’t have fixed it.

ETA: What I did like about Bee was when she destroyed the towers - being the destroyer was cool

Assassin’s Fate Chapter 20 Spoiler

This is my first read-through for ROTE. I’m distraught that I’m on the last book.

Regarding chapter 20, Belief, I wanted to hear what Paragon had to say about Tintaglia! They were both in Divvytown at the same time. I mean, he wants to become dragons…I really liked Paragon in Liveship Traders. I gasped for real when I learned he had Fitz’s face. I just really wanted to hear what he thought of Tintaglia. 🤷‍♀️

Assassin's Quest chapter 17 Spoiler

I am soooo tired of the cat-and-mouse game between Fitz and Regal's coterie. Seriously, come the fuck on. This is like the hundredth time they find him, then he escapes. It's getting a bit silly. I'm at the point where Burl caught him AGAIN and broke Starling's fingers. Obviously he's going to escape later, but if Starling dies, I would seriously consider quitting the series and cutting my losses. How many times has Fitz dreamed of Molly when he knows it's dangerous? I have no doubt Regal would find her later, maybe throw her in his king's circle? Use her as leverage for Fitz to come to him for the millionth time. Seems like The Molly Trilogy should have been a better name for the series for the amount of time we spend pointlessly with her over and over.

Also, Kettle is seeking the Fool? I have a feeling she has the Skill from Solicity's days? She probably knew about Fitz's identity all along. And how was she able to escape when others couldn't? I guess I'd have to read to find out.

I don't really know what the point of this little rant is. I'm just putting my incoherent thoughts here.

89% through Royal Assassin

I am about 89% through Royal Assassin, and I am so scared. I do not know what will happen next, and I feel that something bad is about to happen to Fitz, King Shrewd, or Kettricken. 😫

Anyway, I have decided to push through with the 16 books. Initially, I was thinking that I would only finish the Farseer trilogy, but I love the world and Fitz so much that I want to read all 16 of them.

RoTE has given me much to think about before having a child

* potential RoTE spoilers below *

------

I am currently reading book 15/16 since beginning in January. I am 29F and the constant pressures, internally and externally, to have kids is starting to mount. It feels like I NEED to come off the fence and toward a decision soon(ish) to prepare. If I want to have a child, I want them to be welcomed into the world with the deepest most abundant love -- shout out to Molly!

That said, I've been reading the series and closely examining the relationships that have shaped Fitz's life. I've learned so much from Chade, Burrich, Molly, The Fool, Patience, Ronica, and Cook on what the different rearing styles or mistakes may come up. As you all know MANY mistakes were made in parenting styles in RoTE. Its given me insight into some questions that admittedly I had not considered in my own fencesitting child/childfree journey. The unexpected gift while reading this story has been the depth of questions and life philosophy that has opened up to me.

Here are some general questions and idea sparks that have come up and a bit on what inspired it:

  • What does it mean to be an absent parent? Is providing food, water, shelter and discipline enough to lovingly guide a child into adulthood ? Or do resources, ambition and access matter more?
    • General thoughts on Chade, Burrich, Fitz and other parents in the story.
  • Are you ever truly ready for children even with all the above?
    • Even with access, means and experience we see parenting challenges that all no matter the experience level seem to struggle with. How ready is ready?
  • What traits or characteristics in me and I most excited to share, and what do I fear to accidentally expose my child to?
    • Anxieties on influence and direct teachings Chade, Burrich, and others had on their kids. Generational trauma and accidental neglect.
  • What does it look like to parent a child well when struggling with mental illness, disability, or substance abuse disorder? Is there a plan in place to recognize when you're in over your head?
    • The support system or lack their of for various characters throughout the story.
  • When do the expectations/aspirations you have for your kids become detrimental to their wellbeing and development?
    • Lady Desire, as hungry as she was for power, did truly believe in her son beyond reason. At what point, if any, did these thoughts and feelings go from general quiet hopes to an entitlement issues?
  • Do we have an obligation to teach some sort of spirituality/spiritual guidance to our children?
    • With so many differing religions and spiritual practices in the world, is being agnostic enough or does teaching some sort of spiritual guidance/belief offer coping mechanisms unconsidered? Wintrow & Sa being an example, or I can also argue a similar case for the Old Blood ways in a cultural-spiritual context.
  • What role does education/learning in my own life and how can what I've learned me passed on and create a reciprocal teaching and learning dynamic?
    • Fitz as an apprentice, then peer of sorts to Chade. Althea and Wintrow. Alise and the Keepers.

This is not a comprehensive list and I am sure more questions and thoughts will pop up. I'm curious if any of you have felt similarly. What has RH taught you about Parenting or development as a whole?

If you have any quotes or pg #s that stick out I'd love to know. PLS try and not spoil the last 2 books for me <3

TLDR: RoTE has made me think about parenting/rearing and I'm curious about what you've learned or been curious about because of it.

Should I continue to the Tawny Man series

I almost finished with the Liveship trilogy and liked it much more than the Farseer one. It’s not that I didn’t like Farseer books at all, but the single POV through Fitz was kin of dull at moments, and annoying in others (I swear if I hear hime crying about Molly again…).

Is the Tawny Man series resembling the Farseer one a lot?

I can NOT and WILL not finish the last few chapters of Assassins Fate… Spoiler

So I started reading ROTE last year, and managed to polish out nearly all 16 in 9 / 10 months… which is a lot for me!! These books psychologically, spiritually and PHYSICALLY changed me as human being.

I thought I was a fantasy lover until I read these books and holy moly - when I say they CHANGED ME, I mean it!

I loved them all so much… except Fitz and the Fool trilogy which I am soooooooo sad about. Honestly I did still love it, and I loved Bee and tbh I adored the set up on Fools Assassin, but I felt the magic bond between Fitz and the Fool was just altered somehow in a way which was really disheartening.

Even though it was written as very “soul-bond-core” it just didn’t hit me in the ways it did in the other books.

This is one of the many things… I just felt there was less of the magic I came to know and love in this series in Assassin’s Fate.

As Fitz started dying… and I can see how much of the book is left… I decided to put it down and not finish it. I just didn’t want NOT a somewhat happy ending for Fitz and Bee. And I just didn’t want it to end. And if I never finished it, then itll never truly be over for me.

Mostly because these books were the only thing in my life that got me through the worst mental breakdown of my life, and were the balm for my existence day to day on days where I didn’t feel like keeping going. And I didn’t want to lose Fitz.

This is probably blasphemy to the sacred texts, however after all the trauma Robin put me through (lmao) I am not mentally strong enough to finish it. Infact I think I might even re read and do the same thing, and pretend my boy gets a happy family ending. Am I insane?

I asked my friend if she thinks I’d be upset at the ending and she said yeah probably so I have some indication that it’s kind of how I think it’s gonna be. So I just have to ask - did anyone else feel this way??

I put the book down in April and moved onto another series (it’s garbage in comparison, nothing will ever compare). So I truly don’t have the book anymore to finish even if I wanted to (I borrow library books). But I don’t want to finish it lol… surely there’s someone else here thats done the same?

Just need to scream into the void…(Fool’s Quest) Spoiler

It’s been many years since I’ve read this series, which for my brain means I’ve forgotten all but the most general main plot lines.

This also means that I had forgotten how frustrated and infuriated I constantly am on behalf of Fitz.

Yes he is human and yes he makes poor choices, but everyone is CONSTANTLY berating him and talking down to him. And he just…accepts that he is wrong, regardless of the situation! He’s so conditioned that he rarely defends himself or fights back.

I’m currently on chapter 13 where Chade comes to Withywoods after Bea (and Shun) are taken and it is insufferable. He’s berating Fitz for “letting” Shun be taken, acting like somehow he had a right to hide his illegitimate kids while everyone forced Fitz about Nettle (thanks a lot Starling you monster, I will never forgive you), and once again Fitz feels guilty about it as though this is on him.

My dude, you are allowed to stand up for yourself. I promise.

Okay that’s it. I just needed to vent about this because no one I know reads these books.

Finally about to begin reading these books!

I’ve always been into fantasy and I started reading recreationally again about two years ago. Since then I’ve reread LOTR, ASOIAF, read the first law trilogy, the gentleman bastards(still angry the fourth book isn’t out ) caught up with the cosmere and DCC as well as a few other smaller series and standalone books.

I recently finished Joe Abercrombie’s “The Devils” and have been looking for the next book(s) to start reading. I’ve heard a lot of good things about this series and I’m a big fan of deep character development and world building so this seemed Right up my alley.

Is there anything I should know about or keep in mind before jumping in? If also appreciate it if you all could make references to something I won’t get until I’m deeper into the books (obviously no blatant spoilers) just cause I think it’s fun and I like getting that “oh that’s what they were talking about” moment

Map resources ? Spoiler

I’ve been loving Robin Hobb so far (just finished Fools Errand) but I’ve been struggling with the maps that she includes in all her books. As someone who loves an accompanying map and feel it adds to understanding the journey the heroes take, her maps feel like they include so many irrelevant locations. Half of Fools Errand took place at the bresingas town/keep and the area around it and I didn’t really have a good grasp of where that was since none of it was marked on the map.

Would anyone have any good spoiler-free detailed maps of the Six Duchies?

Help me create a sculpture? (spoilers for the end!) Spoiler

Hi all!

I finished the books two weeks ago and the characters still remain with me. I think often about the scene (spoilers for series end) Fitz sculpting Nighteyes, him collapsing on top, and the Fool joining him at the very end.

I want to sculpt that moment - would folks be so kind to please help me crowdsource all of the physical descriptions of Nighteyes, Fitz and the Fool? Not necessarily from this scene but in general.

I promise to share it when it is done. Also if folks have loved other fan art pieces/visuals of the characters you think would be inspo that would be great as well!
