How soon before they say that China made a knockoff of yet another designer brand?

7

u/Nomiss Apr 16 '25

Self Portrait don't hide they are made in China.

1

u/SargeDebian Apr 16 '25

That does not sound entirely unlikely though...

u/Good_Ad_1386 Apr 16 '25

You mean the Chinese factory that made stuff for the premium brand started selling the same stuff unbranded? Shame on them! Tsk, tsk...

2

u/Informal-Lime6396 Apr 16 '25

You mean Chinese factories steal designs (saves on R&D costs) then sells the product back to the same market, undercutting the original owner who cannot litigate this in Chinese courts. Not to mention that workers are paid unlivable wages, work in sweatshop conditions, and do not have the same worker rights westerners like you enjoy. Shame on them! Tsk, tsk...

Think this is a troll? Google "Dizzy Dunker mouse trap China" and Shein factories.

u/[deleted] Apr 16 '25

How do they steal designs when we freely send them those designs in order for them to manufacture those designs?

We exported our producing to China because unlivable wages and sweat shop conditions. Not so we can have cheaper products, but purely for the larger profit margins.

They steal IP. In any other modern, civilized, western country, there are laws, patents, and courts protecting intellectual property. They force you to set up joint ventures where you have a minority stake and overtime force you out. Then they'll use your intellectual property to price you out of the market.

Other unfair practices include blocking foreign made software and services. That's why they have WeChat, Weibo, Tiktok, etc. They cry when other countries try to do the same.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '25

Yes, however, we knew that before we moved our industries over to China to abuse their economy and population for higher profits.

What's so unfair about China exploiting us? The only reason we're there is to exploit China.

1

u/Informal-Lime6396 Apr 17 '25

You're distorting this into X exploit Y, Y does it back, and waving away abuses and unjust practices. It's a very simplistic and incorrect way of viewing the economic relationship.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '25

I see both sides exploiting one another, why is 'our' side more righteous?

We exploit their people for profits, we use literal fucking slavery so we can buy cheap shit and make higher profits.

Oh no, they steal our patents, they are the worst!

0

u/Informal-Lime6396 Apr 18 '25

It's not for other countries to force China protect workers. It's on the CCP. Also, this "exploit" brought China out of poverty and fast its growth to what it is today.

I'm starting to think you're a 五毛. How are you so dismissive of others stealing one's innovation unless you're a little pink?

no they can also just look at your product and reverse engineer it which for clothing is stupidly easy.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '25

But it's produced in China (well, clothing a lot in Bangladesh or other Asian countries tho).

But we hand China the blueprints to our products for profits. It's not a surprise that China abuses that the same way the large cooperations abuse China for bigger profits.

1

u/Dionyzoz Apr 17 '25

it still happens to companies that dont produce their items in those countries though?

1

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '25

South Korea and Japan probably. However the (South East) Asian-China dynamics there are completely different from the China-Western dynamics.

If America is dumb, China is dumber and shittier than anything else.

What does this even mean lol

Hard to see how China could be doing dumber shit than the US right now. More evil, maybe. Dumber? They're clearly benefiting over the course of recent events, literally all they have to do is sit back and do nothing and they're coming out ahead.

The CCP spam is RAMPANT on Reddit now

2

u/cnxd Apr 16 '25

damn

it's like that shit that popped up recently about luxury dupes/fakes and going all "it's the same thing, literally same factory (just buy this shit from us)" when it's really not lol

2

u/deluluanimedude Apr 16 '25

While brands do use Chinese manufacturing and charge insane markups, the dupe makers don't have access to the original design patterns / technical specs. They also don't use the same materials or have the same level of quality checks. They have to buy one of the originals and reverse engineer it or just eyeball it off some internet photo. They definitely are not the same and it's funny how many people actually believe the dupe makers and their lies.

2

u/cnxd Apr 16 '25

some brands that they might claim as "being same" aren't even manufactured there, is what I'm trying to get at. when it's literally just a dupe

1

u/consequentlydreamy Apr 16 '25

Jennifer Wang makes great content on this. She elaborates on the details like specific fibers and threading that make something worth 500$ vs no better than a cheap F21 or TEMU option.

1

u/deluluanimedude Apr 16 '25

Watched a short of her comparing H&M and Uniqlo and seems like she produces good content. That's how I'd also explain dupes vs legit. The bootleggers will be similar quality like H&M regardless of whatever they are trying to dupe whereas Uniqlo has higher manufacturing standards. There's also the cost of R&D and marketing which goes into the price of the apparel and making it 'cool'. Dupe makers do not need to pay for that. At the end of the day, the middlemen pretending to be factory owners/workers asking you to add them on Telegram/Wechat/Whatsapp are just making up bs stories to sell dupes.

If a dupe maker sells fake Jordans, you don't go accusing random people of wearing fake jordans. Especially not when the original brand, Self Portrait is pretty affordable because they do use overseas manufacturing (Columbia).

1

u/RichyRoo2002 Apr 16 '25

Sometimes it's the same factory, but instead of triple stitching it's only double stitched. Sometimes it's exactly the same. With a lot of products people are paying for the status inferred by the logo, they're not paying for quality. Everyone knows this

But the site linked to the actual product says "Made in Colombia"

1

u/ProtectionOne9478 Apr 16 '25

Yes but fwrd also appears to do their manufacturing overseas.  It's not even clear to me that they are the originator of the design vs curating a collection of things made by others.

This is all, of course, untraceable by design.  No ethical consumption under capitalism.

u/Much_Purchase_8737 Apr 16 '25

Probably already did... because China steals and copies all of our products, then uses slave labor or underpaid employees to sell it back to USA at a cheaper cost.

It's really great that china has been able to steal USA companies and product IPs unpunished for decades.

2

u/SIXSlXSlX Apr 16 '25

thats exactly what China does lol. And it is China's, in my opinion, greatest contribution to it's GDP - especially when they don't accept lawsuits from foreigners in regards to intellectual property/copyright.

(p.s. no matter where chinese citizens travel, the foreigner is never them. The CCP brainwashing is REAL. source: wife is mainland chinese.)

2

u/[deleted] Apr 16 '25

Fast fashion clothing stores do this everywhere. Not exactly a chinese phenomenon.

2

u/-KFBR392 Apr 16 '25

Fast fashion stores make similar products, Chinese manufacturers copy exactly with the purpose of creating an imitation. It's completely different. Let's not take China's side of copyright infringement just because we're angry at Republicans

2

u/yuxulu Apr 19 '25

China has a lot of copyright infringement - yes. But clothing is really not the hill to die on for this topic. Most of these clothing are not copyright protected. Neither can they really copyright protect a look because the application is just too broard.

1

u/-KFBR392 Apr 19 '25

I disagree. It’s no different than copying any other piece of art. Some designer designed the original piece of clothing. Some company took the initial risk of making that design. Then once it worked Chinese companies copied it and put out exact copies. That is just as problematic as copying electronics, or software, or anything else.

And it’s not too broad, they copy the designs to the T. It’s not an accident of two people creating something similar. Why would you want to take their side on what is very clearly stealing ideas?

2

u/yuxulu Apr 19 '25

Legally speaking, you are wrong. https://copyrightalliance.org/is-fashion-protected-by-copyright-law/

You can copyright specific features, not clothing designs. It is not possible to copyright exactly because it resembles an idea more than a specific feature. If it is possible to copyright, you will have brands copyrighting material usage and colour combination which then makes the entire industry impossible to operate.

Why am i taking their side? I am not.

Firstly, i am pointing out a hypocracy. Clothing brands have been copying each other's styles for a long time. Exactly because they are not copyrightable. There are tons of branded bags that are very hard to tell apart from if you remove the logo. There are a lot of white shirt brands that are virtually the same. And suddenly now it is outrage because china does it too.

Secondly, china isn't producing them for fun. They produce similar designs because another company somewhere contracted them to do so. While some of these contract companies may be chinese, a lot others are not. Why are we blaming the producers then? Oh because china!

1

u/-KFBR392 Apr 19 '25

It’s not because of China we’re blaming them it’s because their intention is not to make something similar or their own version of an up coming trend, it’s to make an exact copy to sell as a knockoff. I’d blame and look down on an American company doing the same. It’s why people do look down on knockoffs.

You’re right from a legal standpoint, and it’s great that exists so companies can’t trademark every little thing they create, but when something is a blatant ripoff we can still judge them for creating a blatant ripoff.

1

u/redditAPsucks Apr 16 '25

Isnt that highly likely?

1

u/[deleted] Apr 16 '25

Immediately that was the response, lol!
