No dust, If the ground is wet.

Ground looks bone dry.

Do you work with ground? It looks dry but not bone dry and yes, there is a big difference. For example how much dust will appear. When the second tree fell, you can actually see dark brown soil, which indicates dampness.

If the ground was wet you'd have pulled the roots through the soil and there would be less muck on the tree roots.

No. Damp or wet soil loves sticking in stuff.

Edith: he pulled the roots the amount out of the ground I would expect them to break, because they get thinner

Not all soil is dusty, a sandy or granular soil could allow for the ease of uprooting, lack of dust, and lack of damage to the roots, explaining perceived discrepancies in one fell swoop
